There used to be a hydroelectric dam upstream that could control releases, but it was destroyed in Hurricane Helene. The future of the dam is uncertain. I appreciated the warm welcome we received when we arrived. We had booked online and signed all of our waivers before we got there. We reserved(rented) water shoes for several folks, as they did not have appropriate footwear. Check in, shoe selection, and safety briefing went quickly , and we were in our tubes in no time. The river was mainly calm stretches punctuated by intermittent small rapid areas. Nothing felt daunting or too dangerous. It had the right level of excitement for the kids to handle themselves. The take out was well marked. It was easy to get our tubes up to the van for the short ride back. We took the first time slot of the day, and were amazed by the crowded parking lot when we returned around noon. We look forward to returning.

We will be back. Green Rover Adventures is great! (Also, the water is so much warmer than at the Natahala) -- We are older but enjoyed hearing all the happy families in the parking lot as we left. This is an adventure for all ages, I believe.

Ongoing regional drought conditions and minimal recreational water releases from the dam have made the trip highly physically demanding. the standard 3.5-mile route took up to 8 hours to complete, with several groups not reaching the Pump House take-out until after sunset.Walking the river: Outings require getting out of the tube to drag it over exposed rocks, shoals, and sandbars where the water is only a few inches deep.Paddles are mandatory: Reviewers strongly warn that you must bring a paddle to navigate the stagnant water. Without one, you will get stuck in calm pools and slow eddies.Obstacles exposed: Sunken logs, tree stumps, and sharp rocks that are usually hidden are fully exposed, increasing the risk of popping standard vinyl tubes.Advice If You Go AnywayPack extra supplies: Because you will likely be on the water twice as long as expected, bring double the amount of water, snacks, and sunscreen.Upgrade your watercraft: Reviewers heavily suggest switching from a standard tube to a kayak or paddleboard to make it easier to power through the flat water.Shorten the route: Local paddlers suggest putting in further downstream at the Pump House / Riverwalk access and pulling out at River Park to cut the trip distance in half.Would you like help looking up the upcoming dam release schedule to see if water levels might pick up, or would you like to explore shorter alternative routes nearby?was this water stagnant to the point that it could make you ill29 sitesYes, the slow-moving, low water from this past weekend does carry a heightened risk of waterborne illness, as the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation issued a "no-swim" advisory for the Lake Wylie Dam area due to elevated E. coli bacteria levels. While the water is not completely "dead" or stagnant like a pond, the combination of hot summer heat, minimal dam flow, and low water levels creates an environment where bacteria and pathogens concentrate.Primary Health Risks in Low, Warm FlowsGastrointestinal Illness: High levels of fecal coliform bacteria like E. coli are the most immediate threat. Accidental ingestion of river water can cause severe cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea.Infections and Rashes: Slower, warmer water is a breeding ground for bacteria that enter through open cuts or scrapes. This is exacerbated when tubers have to drag their tubes over shallow rocks, increasing the likelihood of skin abrasions.Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs): Warm, flat, sun-exposed river water can trigger blue-green algae blooms. These blooms produce toxins that cause skin irritation, respiratory distress, or severe illness if swallowed.Naegleria fowleri: While extremely rare, this warm-water amoeba thrives in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater during peak summer heat. It causes a fatal brain infection if water is forced forcefully up the nose.Safety Measures If You Exposed YourselfSanitize immediately: If you were on the water this past weekend, thoroughly shower with soap and wash any clothing or gear used.Monitor your health: Keep a close eye out for symptoms like fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, or unusual skin rashes over the next few days.Seek medical attention: If you experience persistent gastrointestinal distress or have an open wound that looks red, swollen, or infected, see a doctor right away.

Every single staff member we were in contact with was also courteous and helpful. The tubes are high quality, comfortable and easy to handle. The river was a bit low but water flowing at a nice rate. Never really got stuck due to low water just have to pick butt up a bit. Staff shared that the Army corps of Engineers had came through and cleaned up the river. Indeed they did. There was not debris noted. No trees in river. Very calming, quiet and safe river/ environment. Bus ride is safe and they put tube in bus and they take it out. Bathrooms and changing rooms are very clean and tidy. Absolutely a wonderful experience and river is safe and clean. The cost very reasonable $15 for the long tubing run

The river has changed a lot since Helene came through, but so many people have done a lot of hard work to make the area safe and usable again. That being said, the water levels are low in many places which leads to bottoming out on the sand, gravel, or rocks. Lift your bum in these areas and you'll have better luck coasting over them. Everyone had a blast. The tubes stayed inflated and safe. Lifejackets for everyone. Staff was friendly and welcoming. It rained off and on, but we were wet anyway, so it didn't matter. We had fun. There was laughter all day and many memories were made. Thank you.
