A seriously underrated burger spot in the Hollywood area - an area that's inundated with PLENTY of smash burger options! Double N Up is a very lowkey and unassuming burger spot just off Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood. There is some counter seating inside and a couple tables outside of it, but it's a small location and likely best to utilize for takeout. Regardless, I absolutely LOVE their offerings. In addition to some good ol' smash burgers (which you can also elect to get with jalapeños for added heat), there's also chicken and steak Philly options that I found so juicy and flavorful. The smash burger also hit just right, perfectly prepared with great tenderness, juiciness, flavor and texture. I love the house sauce on it and like I said, you can add the jalapeños, which I personally enjoy the added heat from. You can also see them preparing your order while inside the intimate but clean indoor space, which is done very promptly and efficiently following the taking of your order. Was hoping this burger and fries combo would be better. Don't get me wrong it is a tasty smash burger with fries but it wasn't anything spectacular. I prefer an In N Out double double animal style with animal fries over this meal especially with chopped chilis, but what I did like is that you could add jalapeños (they weren't hot at all) at no extra cost and that you have a Philly option in addition to a traditional smash burger. The place is small and seriously HOT inside. At least on a summer day it was unpleasant in there. The tiny tables outside had so many incessant flies coming around it was annoying and took away from the experience. Service was quick and helpful. Maybe with more indoor seating experience (and fans?!?) it would have been better (or take your food to-go!). read more

It was worth the drive from the Westside to try this place and that's saying a lot! Plus they have parking, so that made it easier. They have a new Chicken Philly which is delicious and wasn't dry at all (like chicken tends to be) but the Double Philly and Philly Fries are the star of the show for me. L.A. is full of good burger joints...and Double N Up is another one. Got the double smash, which had a nice soft bun and a really flavorful patty. Was kind of peppery, like Fatburger, but not as strong. It was some subtle. Also had the fries, which were crispy and tasty. It's also a good sized portion. The only bummer, but it's totally understandable, is that their beverages are all in a fridge, so they only have sodas and bottled water. Don't know if I could've brought in an iced coffee or something; I didn't ask. As for the place itself, the food came out quickly but was still made fresh. The staff were friendly, though all the ordering was done through a touch screen. The place was also clean. Now, the only seats they have inside are at a small bar, and with stool chairs, though they do have some seats outside. I tried the double Philly, a Philly Cheesesteak inspired sandwich with ribeye beef, mushrooms, cheese, and onions. It was awesome! Packed full of experyly grilled flavors piled high on a toasted hamburger bun. There was so much in the bun that I lost some of the fillings when I picked it up. It was filling, tasty, and fresh. I'd have ordered fries, but I'm trying to lower my average meal calorie intake. The sandwich by itself was quite filling. They are located in a small strip mall with a lot of other restaurants, so parking seems like it can be tricky. But it's okay because there is lots of easy street parking right on Highland. The storefront is small and cozy. There are some bar counter seats inside and a nice patio area outside. The crew was friendly and helpful. I'd certainly eat here again. There are great choices I was so close to getting a cheesesteak or a smashed burger . I decided to go with the Chicken Philly on a potato bun ! Really good . I like that it's starved with thinly sliced jalapeños that are fresh not pickled ! The chicken was well seasoned but not over salted. It was hot !
