Located in Highland Park proper I was turned on to Goldburger because I drive by it on the way to the gym. As a burger fan, I wanted to give it shot and I finally found the time to. Parking: Street parking was super easy on a Sunday afternoon, I was able to pull up right in front and park on the street. There is a Super A across the street and ample parking around for free. Ambiance & Food: This reminds me of an old school burger stand. Those were the best burgers and this one did not stop that trend. As I walked up, we were warmly greeted and given a quick rundown of what which burger. They did have specials (I will get to that in a second) which we were intrigued, but for the sake of perspective, I ordered the Goldburger and both regular fries and curly fries with a bottle coke. The Goldburger is naturally a double, but my gymrat protein brain added that extra patty. They use a 70% to 30% mixture for their burger which makes the burger oh so decadent. The picture I took doesn't do it justice. The moment you bite into the burger the combination of burger juice, aioli, burnt skirt, all come together in such a harmonious fashion. It was remarkable. Though fries are not one of my strong points, both fries were crispy and I haven't had any other experience with Curly fries other than Jack in the Box, but these were so much better. I went ahead and dipped the fries in some homemade Aioli and dang, what a combo! Back to those specials, the current special is CHILI, I was intrigued so they gave me a small container of it to try. Man, if I wasn't watching my caloric intake, that would have been the move. It was rich and chunky and not to soggy which some always comes. Give it a try as they said it will be around for sometime. Other than burgers, they do have hot dogs as well. So worth trying both next time. To be perfectly honest, this brought back so much nostalgia for me, I used to go to school in the area and this brought a lot of those memories back. I'm sorry but this burger was almost inedible it was so salty. I got the double smash and it came super highly recommended from friends and other burger enthusiasts. No where near the flavor and umami as heavy handed and easy street and more modern places. Very fatty. Fries had a good crisp but the chili was super super smoky. Not sweet at all. Which is fine, but not my style. Chili is very user specific. People that worked there were incredibly nice. The diet soda option wasn't bad. Alright guys I had been day drinking all day at The Rainbow paying respects to Lemmy and when we got back to Highland Park the crew was HOUNGRY We decided we needed big burgers and chose none other than Goldburger. The lady at the window was super nice! We decided to eat in the hallway adjacent to the kitchen, it was a nice warm night and the hall has a bunch of cool plants hanging Let's get into it!! I ordered the signature Goldburger and decided to add pastrami! Look at that! It's sliced thin and comes across kind of like a mound of bacon, melts in your mouth along with the rest of the burger. Very interesting combination it comes highly recommended! No overthinking it, just burgers done right. Both were solid, no complaints. Staff is cool too. Nice, patient, not rushing you even when it's busy, which I always appreciate. Only real downside is seating... but honestly that's kinda the deal with all their locations. You either find a spot or you're eating like you just made a life decision on the sidewalk. We spent about $55 for two burgers, and we made them a combo by adding a drink and fries each, plus a pastrami hot dog. Maybe it's just me, but that's pretty pricey for a takeout burger spot. Idc how historic or whatever it is. The staff were kind and helpful. We opted to eat in the small patio on the side of the building, so we could taste our food fresh. It was decent size and there were other patrons eating as well. The pastrami hot dog was delicious! Never thought about adding pastrami to a hotdog, but I loved it! I had regular fries and my brother had curly fries, and we both got the spicy ranch. The fries were fries, lol, nothing special but they were cool and I enjoyed the dip. On to the LA Special burger I ordered, while the taste was cool, there was too much gristle in the meat. I couldn't properly enjoy my burger, because I was constantly spitting out pieces of gristle. I hate that! Idk if it was a poor quality of beef, but for that price tag, I feel that there shouldn't be gristle in almost every bite. I've heard about Goldburger's smashburger here in Highland Park by a very dear friend (he's 11 years old BTW) for over two years. My young friend knows more about "the inner going ons" here in the Pasadena food scene than the food critic of The Los Angeles Times. This particular Goldburger restaurant (their are several) was basically an: Order Window on the street and an open garage type area with stools to enjoy your meal. And, this open garage is as bare bones as a locker. We all ordered our smashburgers: Me and my wife ordered Goldburger's, Goldburger with a Grass-Fed 6oz. double cheeseburger with grilled onions, fresh pickles, and a house-made award winning garlic-mustard aioli. I loved it, Our friend ordered the California Classic with Grass-Fed 6oz. double cheeseburger with diced onions, fresh pickles, shredded lettuce, and a house-made classic sauce. He woofed his burger down like it was his last meal. We got two orders of fries: one Curly and one Straight and the we were off to the races. I ordered the California Classic Burger (double patty) and my wife got the Goldburger (single patty), but with their slices of bread, not a bun.. We also got curly fries. The patties were crispy and I liked the texture, but they were also a bit salty. A standard cheeseburger, I'm personally a fan of a burger with more toppings so I will be back to try some of their other options. The sparkling lemonade and cola that they have both come in glass bottles, which gives it a more luxurious experience. It is a nice touch and the drinks were chilled. Smaller portions than a fountain drink though, but they also have a free water station. The curly fries were also tasty, not standout though, and the combo comes with a sauce. Probably one of my favorite smash burger places in LA. I've had their LA special with pastrami version which is amazing. The pastrami was very tender and not fatty at all. It went well with the burger. I recently had the gold burger with curly fries and it was excellent. The burger had a nice char and the carmelization of the patty was perfect. The curly fries was very fresh and good. Good texture and good amount of seasoning. The staff was quick and nice and quick to guide you to the restroom and other amenities. The decor was super nice with plants hung over their establishment as a way to show that they care about their space. Fantastic! Without question, Goldburger is in the conversation for the top 5 best smash burgers in Los Angeles. Limited menu (kinda like inn-n-out), they have no-frills smashers and fries. I ordered via Uber-eats, so theoretically, it's a little bit less than hot-n-ready, but I had a speedy driver this time around so everything was fresh -- including the curled fries. Nevermind the aesthetics of all those 'razor-edged' patties, of all the places I patronized, Goldburger has the MOST well-seasoned patty out of any of them. Their style is more traditional, diner style. Unlike the FTW, Goldburger does NOT have the acidic sauce/jalapeno one-two punch. All the flavors going serve the seasoned patty. The onions are not-finely chopped, but rather sliced super-thin in almost a string-like circle. The curly fries were indeed curly, seasoned and worked best with ketchup. My only minor complaint would be the garlic-mustard aioli. It's sublime in how mild it is. I'd prefer a more stronger taste. I am very surprised to find a smash burger in LA that has both good flavor and doesn't feel super greasy. I did pick-up through online order, but there's a small amount of counter space around the corner if you want to eat in their open air seating area. Picked up the California classic (no pickles) with curly fries and a side of spicy ranch and classic sauce. The California classic comes with 6 oz of a double patty smash burgers and the patties were cooked well with still a bit of pink in the middle. Pretty good smash burger and everything you expect! I've eaten a LOT of burgers all over California, NY, Boise, St. Louis. I liked the hard sear and the seasoning was on point for me. I wish the sauce had more presence and flavor, but I'm sure there are folks who disagree and rather a more pure burger. What stood out was the patty melt. The toast was cooked perfectly. It had a thin crisp on the outside and was fluffy inside. The onions were a little overdone and could've used a little more seasoning. I think it really could've benefited with more acidity. However when we asked if they could fix it up like the gold burger, they said they can't make modifications to the order. I know it wouldn't be a true patty melt, but we know the flavor profiles we enjoy. Pickles really would've made this patty melt a 10/10, but ketchup definitely helped. read more
