The lady at the window was super nice! We decided to eat in the hallway adjacent to the kitchen, it was a nice warm night and the hall has a bunch of cool plants hanging Let's get into it!! I ordered the signature Goldburger and decided to add pastrami! Look at that! It's sliced thin and comes across kind of like a mound of bacon, melts in your mouth along with the rest of the burger. Very interesting combination it comes highly recommended! We went with curly fries cuz we are from the Midwest and there are no Arby's out here lol but I opted to grab a side of their classic sauce, which ROCKS! It was so good I was pouring it on the last few bites of my burger. Do yourself a favor and get some classic sauce and pour that stuff right on your burger, you won't be disappointed! Got the Goldburger and the Bar Burger. Pretty easy review for a pretty easy spot. Menu is small which is always a good sign -- means they're focused and everything is fresh. No overthinking it, just burgers done right. Both were solid, no complaints. Staff is cool too. Nice, patient, not rushing you even when it's busy, which I always appreciate. Only real downside is seating... but honestly that's kinda the deal with all their locations. You either find a spot or you're eating like you just made a life decision on the sidewalk. I've heard about Goldburger's smashburger here in Highland Park by a very dear friend (he's 11 years old BTW) for over two years. My young friend knows more about "the inner going ons" here in the Pasadena food scene than the food critic of The Los Angeles Times. Well, with my wife in tow, and us picking up our dear friend from Little League baseball practice this night, he once again (remember he's 11), recommended Goldburger for dinner this night; so we went! This particular Goldburger restaurant (their are several) was basically an: Order Window on the street and an open garage type area with stools to enjoy your meal. And, this open garage is as bare bones as a locker. We all ordered our smashburgers: Me and my wife ordered Goldburger's, Goldburger with a Grass-Fed 6oz. double cheeseburger with grilled onions, fresh pickles, and a house-made award winning garlic-mustard aioli. I loved it, Our friend ordered the California Classic with Grass-Fed 6oz. double cheeseburger with diced onions, fresh pickles, shredded lettuce, and a house-made classic sauce. He woofed his burger down like it was his last meal. We got two orders of fries: one Curly and one Straight and the we were off to the races. Fantastic smash burger. Delicious!!!! The service is also great. I had the one with the thousand isle dressing on it. But horsey everything was so good. I also really enjoyed my swell soda. They offer $14 vegan option but no vegan cheese. The mayo has no dairy but does have eggs. We spent about $55 for two burgers, and we made them a combo by adding a drink and fries each, plus a pastrami hot dog. Maybe it's just me, but that's pretty pricey for a takeout burger spot. Idc how historic or whatever it is. The staff were kind and helpful. We opted to eat in the small patio on the side of the building, so we could taste our food fresh. It was decent size and there were other patrons eating as well. The pastrami hot dog was delicious! Never thought about adding pastrami to a hotdog, but I loved it! I had regular fries and my brother had curly fries, and we both got the spicy ranch. The fries were fries, lol, nothing special but they were cool and I enjoyed the dip. On to the LA Special burger I ordered, while the taste was cool, there was too much gristle in the meat. I couldn't properly enjoy my burger, because I was constantly spitting out pieces of gristle. I hate that! Idk if it was a poor quality of beef, but for that price tag, I feel that there shouldn't be gristle in almost every bite. We came at around 7:30 PM and there were not a lot of people there. No line and plenty of outdoor seating. The service was quick and nice and the prices are reasonable. You can also make it a combo, which makes the value better. The ambience of the seating is decorated well with lights and a nice color scheme. They have a bathroom in the back as well. The patties were crispy and I liked the texture, but they were also a bit salty. A standard cheeseburger, I'm personally a fan of a burger with more toppings so I will be back to try some of their other options. The sparkling lemonade and cola that they have both come in glass bottles, which gives it a more luxurious experience. It is a nice touch and the drinks were chilled. Smaller portions than a fountain drink though, but they also have a free water station. The curly fries were also tasty, not standout though, and the combo comes with a sauce. Probably one of my favorite smash burger places in LA. I've had their LA special with pastrami version which is amazing. The pastrami was very tender and not fatty at all. It went well with the burger. I recently had the gold burger with curly fries and it was excellent. The burger had a nice char and the carmelization of the patty was perfect. The curly fries was very fresh and good. Good texture and good amount of seasoning. The staff was quick and nice and quick to guide you to the restroom and other amenities. The decor was super nice with plants hung over their establishment as a way to show that they care about their space. This is a gem in eagle rock but I'm also excited they posted up in Chinatown too and expect the same quality. read more

Fantastic! Without question, Goldburger is in the conversation for the top 5 best smash burgers in Los Angeles. Limited menu (kinda like inn-n-out), they have no-frills smashers and fries. I ordered via Uber-eats, so theoretically, it's a little bit less than hot-n-ready, but I had a speedy driver this time around so everything was fresh -- including the curled fries. Nevermind the aesthetics of all those 'razor-edged' patties, of all the places I patronized, Goldburger has the MOST well-seasoned patty out of any of them. Their style is more traditional, diner style. Unlike the FTW, Goldburger does NOT have the acidic sauce/jalapeno one-two punch. All the flavors going serve the seasoned patty. The onions are not-finely chopped, but rather sliced super-thin in almost a string-like circle. The curly fries were indeed curly, seasoned and worked best with ketchup. My only minor complaint would be the garlic-mustard aioli. It's sublime in how mild it is. I'd prefer a more stronger taste. There is some good news though: it's mild enough where it's not gonna give you that garlic-breath and ruin your casual date. read more

I am very surprised to find a smash burger in LA that has both good flavor and doesn't feel super greasy. I did pick-up through online order, but there's a small amount of counter space around the corner if you want to eat in their open air seating area. Picked up the California classic (no pickles) with curly fries and a side of spicy ranch and classic sauce. The California classic comes with 6 oz of a double patty smash burgers and the patties were cooked well with still a bit of pink in the middle. I like my burgers with some semblance of veggies, so I liked that there was some shredded lettuce in the burgers, adds to the freshness. Also got the curly fries: tasty, crispy and very similar to jack in the box curly fries. The kick of the spicy ranch ($0.75) comes at the end and the burger sauce is normal burger sauce (ketchup mayo and a little mustard). Pretty good smash burger and everything you expect! I've eaten a LOT of burgers all over California, NY, Boise, St. Louis. I liked the hard sear and the seasoning was on point for me. I wish the sauce had more presence and flavor, but I'm sure there are folks who disagree and rather a more pure burger. What stood out was the patty melt. The toast was cooked perfectly. It had a thin crisp on the outside and was fluffy inside. The onions were a little overdone and could've used a little more seasoning. I think it really could've benefited with more acidity. However when we asked if they could fix it up like the gold burger, they said they can't make modifications to the order. I know it wouldn't be a true patty melt, but we know the flavor profiles we enjoy. Pickles really would've made this patty melt a 10/10, but ketchup definitely helped. read more

Wow!!!! Talk about some AWESOME smashburgers. Tried the Cali burger and adored the house sauce. Threw in an order of curly fries and felt like I was in heaven. We ordered from home (which is thankfully a 10-15 minute walk) and it was ready when we got there. Very fun walking "drive" thru, and very reflective of the York st charm that a lot of the food establishments have here in HP. Happy with my experience and will be returning soon! The employee will call your name when your order is ready. I ordered the Goldburger and got a root beer. The burger had a great flavor accompanied by the house aioli, pickles, and string onions. This is definitely at the top of my list for best smash burgers. The flavors come together nicely and they aren't too heavy. The root beer was a nice contrast to the burgers balancing sweet with savory. I will definitely come back here when I'm in the LA area. I look forward to trying their other burgers. While down the street at a thrift shop. My wife and I got hungry for lunch. We decided to walk over to Goldburger. We both got the Goldburger combo which comes with a burger, fries and a drink. Starting with the burger. It is a real smash burger. In my photos you can see the meat lace around the patty. Perfectly prepared. Well seasoned. The mouth feel was incredible with bits of crispy meat lace in every bite. The fries came out hot with a fantastic crunchy exterior and a soft fluffy interior. The sodas were local brand from San Diego. Cold and refreshing great with this meal. The service was fast and friendly. And they have a small seating area to the left of the order window. Goldburger, a pre-pandemic venture that first made waves by winning LA Food & Wine Epic Burger Throwdown in 2019, set up a temporary operation in Silverlake, until finally establishing its permanent home base in Highland Park. Order from the window out front, then pick up from a takeout window just inside the open-air, storage container-like bungalow. Twinkle lights, potted plants, and skylights accent the from exposed beam ceiling, while the peach-and-royal blue color walls and narrow bar seats are undecorated. I first visited Goldburger's second location, tucked beneath the Los Feliz Theater marquee. Here, the peach shiplap walls are decked with burger-themed and Los Angeles-related photographs in mismatched frames. Wave-patterned hexagon tile floors and 80s tunes are decidedly retro, and a fried sugar, funnel cake-like aroma fills the air. I could count the number of indoor barstools on one hand, but the pastel dining sets and royal blue umbrellas are available for fair weather days. My partner and I arrived early for weekday dinner, and we could order immediately. We opted to split a signature Goldburger with patrami. The first, crispy bite dripped with delicious greasiness and showcased an eyepopping depth of flavor. Every additional component, from the rich Garlic Aoili to the tangy pickles, culminated in the best burger I've enjoyed in recent memory. The exceptionally thin-cut pastrami was on the fatty side, but, even alone, it was brimming with flavor. The large sandwich was dense enough to be reasonably split, but it was mouthwateringly delicious enough that I wanted my own. And, most importantly, the Goldburger was consistently superb on my return visit, this time to the Highland Park original. Here, I learned to avoid sleeping on Goldburger's other eats. The Patty Melt -- a stack of burger patties and ooey gooey Swiss and cheddar atop golden-grilled slices of Bub & Grandma's polenta bread -- was a standalone hit, while the extra crispy Curly Fries were the perfect condiment conduits. Of the dipping sauces, I most enjoyed the aforementioned Garlic Aioli, but the tangy Russian sauce and buttery Spicy Ranch were no slouches, either (only the dull Classic sauce was forgettable). The most unpalatable feature of Goldburger is the bill: over $15 for a single sandwich. Nonetheless, this is the epitome of the LA smashburger, and it's well worth the price.
