Steakhouse DH (top) Amboy Classic Double Amboy Hot Dog
    Jessica P.

Food: If you're going to order the DH, I would suggest getting it Amboy style. The steakhouse was good but kind of too sweet. The patty itself was cooked perfectly, with a nice crisp in the ends. The amboy double smash was really good, I would add chilis to it next time for some spicy and acidity. The hotdog was all good amboy style. The bun was nice and crispy but the dog itself was average. My expectations for this place was 8/10 and the reality of it was also 8/10. Good but nothing blew my mind. Service: I think they need to hire one more person. The cashier was also serving the food so she was only taking 3 orders at a time, and then serving 2 orders after so the line took about 40 mins to order. She was doing amazing but I think it's a disservice to the customers and employees to have only 1 person running the front. Because of that, it makes me a little hesitant to come back.

Decedent burgers in a Chinatown strip mall. Went for lunch, got there about 20 minutes before they opened and glad I did. The line went about 30 deep when I turned around. Ordered the amboy DH, along with some cheese fries. Took about 15 minutes to come out. It was very rich and delicious. I'm glad the bun holds well with the sauce and melted cheese. The fries were pretty good too, but I don't think there was much room left in my stomach for fries. I'm not one who waits in line, but if I can get there a little early to beat the wait, would be happy to come back again.

Basic small french fry. Not crispy at all.

Amboy has been on my radar for a bit, and then one of my Filipino coworkers found out it was Filipino, and then recently I had a lot of good press and then became a social media, darling, so it was finally time to try it! We're not far from the Chinatown location, but too far to walk/eat/walk back in time, so we ordered up DoorDash and it would still be relatively fresh by the time I got there. They are right across from my all-time favorite, Howlin' Ray's, so I know exactly where they're at, but I will have to get down there eventually and check out the ambience of the location and the service quality of the staff. Since it was my first time, I decided to go with the basic Amboy burger, so I could taste the base foundation; and even though I didn't think the fries would travel very well, I decided to get a small order of those, along with a chili dog so I could get a good base level sampling of the menu. Overall, with all the hype recently, I thought it was good, but not what I was expecting from the hype. I'll Order again though and try some more of the menu The portion sizes were good and very filling. The fries really need to be fried crispier because they were pretty flaccid and lifeless when they arrived. The bun was firmer than I anticipated it would be; fresh but somewhat dry. Maybe one of the burgers with the juicy or toppings would help. The hotdog was large and stuck at each end of the bun, probably 3 inches, the chili I liked better than Tommy burgers and overall it was a decent hot dog, but I would love to try fresh at the store one day. One of my Filipino coworkers loved his meal, and the other was just 'eh', but overall we enjoyed it and we would eat it again.

Amboy Classic was a very good smash burger.

Burgers in Chinatown? Sure, why not. Howlin' Rays sells chicken sandwiches just steps across the narrow courtyard/alley from Amboy. There is some metered street parking available and a giant lot across the street but the lot may cost $10 or more. You have to scan the QR Code to find out. Are the burgers here worth they hype? I would say yes. The meat and the buns are very high quality. The DH burgers costs a stiff $21 but it's a huge fat patty, caramelized onions, cheese, and a little sloppy with the burger sauce (but in a good way). The meat is very juicy and flavorful. It is a delicious beast. The rest of the burgers they offer are smash burgers (single for $10) and the quality of the meat and buns are excellent. That is a very good price for this burger. We tried the cheese fries, too, and they were very nice. They are ordinary looking fries with house made cheese melted throughout them. For $8, you get a huge pile of them and plenty to share. They weren't extraordinary but they were still very good. The sauce is not incredibly flavorful but I liked it well enough. You will probably wait a while after you order so settle in. There was almost no line during our visit (mid-afternoon on a Sunday) but they take their time preparing your order. For quality food such as this, I am fine with it. The line for Howlin' Rays was relatively short and I was tempted to ditch my burger dreams for chicken but I am glad I didn't. These burgers are legit.

I'm honestly surprised this place is ranked among the top burger spots in the country--it's way overrated in my opinion. The price wasn't bad at around $14 for a burger, up to 21.00. Unfortunately, the burger itself just didn't live up to the hype. The beef lacked flavor, the sauce was good but nothing extraordinary, and the grilled onions were just okay--and there definitely weren't enough of them. The burgers look much better on Instagram than they do in person. After waiting in a long line, it was a little disappointing. Seating is also extremely limited, so be prepared if you're dining there. We also ordered the garlic fries, and they barely tasted like garlic. They were more like fries coated in a mayonnaise-based sauce. The fries themselves were thin, crispy, and cooked well, but they simply didn't deliver the garlic flavor we expected. Unfortunately, they had already run out of the chili cheese fries, so we weren't able to try those. Given we got there 1:45 they ran out. Overall, I don't think I'd come back. For me, this is a burger that's all hype. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't worthy of all the attention it gets. See my photos of the burgers we ordered.

LOVE!! NO NOTES. The most perfect burger so good! I normally miss the veggies in the burger if there aren't any but this burger was soooo good that it truly did not feel needed. Also the French fries. Fireeeeeee. I prefer them plain and they were perfect. All the girls working are so friendly and nice too. Wish I lived closer. The only thing is the space is v small and harder to get a bigger party together.

Fancy classic. oasted Sesame Bun, Classic Thinly Smashed Patty, Provolone Cheese, Caramelized Onions, Garlic Aioli.

A pretty good meal here! I got the single fancy smash burger, and it was good. It came on a toasted Sesame Bun, Classic Thinly Smashed Patty, Provolone Cheese, Caramelized Onions, Garlic Aioli sauce and it blended together well. The garlic fries topped with Garlic Confit Oil, Fresh Garlic, Parsley, and Garlic Mayo was very good and tasted fresh and hot! I wanted to add bacon to my burger but NOT for $5 dollars. That's way over price for bacon on any burger. Customer service was ok. This location is right across from the famous howlin rays chicken in the same building the far east plaza. You can actually take the metro and exit chinatown and walk 2-3 blocks and you're there which is nice.

OHBOY, AMBOY! If this is not the tastiest, juiciest affordable QUALITY burger in LA then I don't know what is. Service is always friendly and willing to give recommendations! Cute little plaza also, go shopping for some books, a thrifted jacket, or even some dim sum?? Or how about another delicious burger from Amboy? Haha.

So many reviews of Amboy having the best burger in LA.. let's just say the hype is real. I came to Amboy during the work week and the line/wait time was long (I think most regulars order online for pick up). As for the food let's get into it: - Amboy Burger (7/10) We ordered this with the dry aged patty. Really good burger but wasn't worth the $30 dollars or whatever it was. - The Fancy (10/10) We also ordered this with the dry aged patty, but a much more elevated burger. The garlic confit mayo with caramelized onions was the best combination, def one of the best burgers I've had in California. - Chili Cheese Fries (7.5/10) Delicious, but I probably wouldn't order again. Overall a great experience. I wouldn't want to do that wait again so I'll probably order online or come 10 minutes before they open. Would I go again? Absolutely!

This is my second time at Amboy! Their quality of meat was still amazing but I felt that the burger was a bit different this time. It was very greasy which is to be expected but a little too greasy for my personal liking. Last time I got the burgers without the cheese and that's probably the reason. We got the garlic aioli and chili cheese burger and my personal favorite is definitely the one with garlic aioli! The aioli brings out a creamy and garlicky taste that adds to the burger. The chili cheese was also solid. The chili was also made with really great quality meat and I enjoyed the extra spice and flavor it gave the burgers I would skip the fries though. I know the small fry is only 3 dollars but it came out a little cold which kind of disappointed me. The fries are like a crispier version of McDonald's fries. I highly recommend getting the burgers without the cheese because I feel like the cheese adds too much greasiness that the meat already has.

Stopped by to pick up two of their classic burgers to take back home to finish our dinners. My mother-in-law really enjoyed her burger: half that night and the other the next day. Located in the Chinatown Far East Plaza, Amboy (American Boy) serves up gourmet burgers in a casual, take-out setting. It is the brainchild of Alvin Cailan, famous for his Eggslut restaurants, and multi-media star of the 'Burger Show'. I've watched many of his episodes, especially with ones with George Motz. There is another location in West Covina, and read that there is another one (called 'Greenlight Burgers') in Manila. As I've learned being married to a Fil-Am, the term 'Boy' is used ubiquitously in Filipino families to nickname one male in a large family, often replacing the Christian given name in all settings/occasions. So the Amboy moniker is a neat acknowledgement of the chef's Filipino heritage. All his burgers are meat centric, with the DH (D**khead) using a 10 oz dry-aged patty. I like how the menu is set-up, with the price of the burger being based on the choice of patty (classic smashed, 6 oz, or 10 oz aged) plus a small list of add ons: cheese and bacon. The toasted signature bun is very sesame seed friendly, made custom for them by Breadbar LA. So placed and paid for the order with a friendly cashier, and was asked to wait outside for the order to be completed and delivered. The to-go order was well wrapped for carry-out and stayed warm during our trip back home. Amboy ($10 for a single classic smashed patty) - burger sauce, american cheese, caramelized onion, pickles. Mom really liked it. Fancy ($12 for double smashed) - garlic confit mayo, provolone cheese, caramelized onion, pickles. It's a well crafted burger, and the double portion is absolutely the right way to go, doubling down on the meat flavor. There is a small outdoor seating area inside the atrium of the Far East Plaza for their diners. The quality of the meat can't be denied. I will come back again, this time trying the DH with Nueske's Bacon (+5, which I'm super happy is available here since it's from Wisconsin).

Why 4 stars? Because this was a solid postgame meal after Dodger stadium. --- --- ---- I recently wrote a review for Guisado's and said almost the same thing in reverse. We were staying in DTLA and had nearly a 3 mile walk from bed to seats at Dodger Stadium. After a game that started at 5:20p, we were looking for a dinner on the walk back to the hotel and this ended up being perfect. Full disclosure: I really wanted Howlin' Rays initially but they closed too early to make that a reality, but we weren't mad with this alternative, which ironically ended up being pretty much right next door. The Amboy double smash was solid. High quality meat that really melted in your mouth. The truffle fries were nice, in that, they had a truffle flavor, but it wasn't so overwhelming. Sometimes truffle seems to really stay in your mouth all night and into the next day and that was not the case here. There were only a few tables in here, but we lucked out that someone left right when our order was ready, so we snagged their seat.

First time trying Amboy! Everything from the service to the food was good!! If can't find parking on the street, there's a parking lot across the street (gotta pay for all parking) Small place but plenty of seating outside to enjoy your food! Definitely going back to try other patties!

After eating roughly a hundred Michelin stars around the world, my usual take on LA fine dining has…read morebeen: the plating is often very competent, but the soul is frequently out of office. Then I went back to Firstborn twice within three months. This newly listed 2025 tasting menu spot actually made me feel a little hopeful about LA fine dining again. The shiso with razor clam and beef cheek cochon, and the black cod with green Sichuan pepper mala noodles, are both full-on collisions between deep animal savoriness and sharp, vivid spice. Then dishes like roasted artichoke and morel stuffed with green peas bring the seasonality into clear focus. The menu is not huge, but every dish has a defined structure and a bold sense of movement. On paper, it reads a little mysterious and intimidating; once you eat it, everything suddenly makes perfect sense, and honestly, it gets addictive. The ingredient selection and handling are also seriously thoughtful. Take the aged duck main course. I am very much a "if there is duck on the fine dining menu, I'm ordering it" person, and I've had plenty of beautifully rich, tender duck breasts. But Firstborn's version, beyond being tender and luscious, had that Cantonese sense of "gan xiang" -- the sweet, savory aroma you get from naturally air-dried, aged meats. For a second, I had this flashback to going with my family as a kid to Xing Fu Lou in Wenquan for Lutian cured meats during winter solstice. Absurdly good. Calling it the Duck King of the West Coast does not feel excessive. On my second visit, the truffle and wild mushroom "gnudi" was also excellent. The moment it hit the table, that intense truffle aroma made me think of the deep, earthy punch of French Périgord black truffle. But then I thought, wait, where are they getting Périgord in June? Turns out they were using Australian winter truffle, perfectly in season. That sourcing logic is smart. It is not expensive for the sake of being expensive; it actually understands the flavor window. The fire-grilled lamb saddle on the second visit was just as strong. It preserved the soft, tender texture of the cut without losing that sweet, milky lamb flavor. Grilled over open flame to a rosy medium rare, the flavor, doneness, and ingredient choice all landed. To me, a great restaurant comes down to three things: concept, ingredients, and seasoning. Some fine dining places love making everything complicated, stacking seven or eight ingredients together, serving a dozen-plus courses, and by the end you feel exhausted and sleepy. Firstborn is the opposite. It is unconventional, but from amuse-bouche to dessert, every dish explains its own logic clearly. Final feeling after the meal: addictive, interesting, and absolutely worth coming back for.

One thing I can say though is that as time goes by, the food in La just keeps getting better and better. While this place may have had showstopping pizza in 2018, a lot of other places have really upped their food game as well. But that's the great thing about innovation. We have places like this we can look at as staples, and then some new place just goes and outdoes it. I like bestia though. I'll probably come back a few more times too, now that the waitlist has stopped being over a month long. The service here is attentive. The ambiance is nice. It's a fun place to eat!

Excellent beers on tap for $5-$6 and even an espresso martini for like $14. Chicken sandwich was always on point and also a big fan of the Morrison Trio. Owner was always pleasant and the servers were top notch. I never had an item on the menu that was not delicious. And I tried just about everything on their rotating happy hour menu. I remember they were selling $10 Don Julio 1942 shots one time because it was Cinco de Mayo week. Great times and memories made at this restaurant. Holiday decor was always great to see especially during Halloween. A true loss. Bring it back please! If there are any Dodgers fans out there with a good pregame spot, please reply with recommendations seeing how I do not have one anymore.

First off, I'm sad to know they are closed :(…read more The last time I went there was around the holidays before the end of the year and enjoyed some good wings and a couple of drinks. The staff was friendly and very attentive. The wings and drinks themselves were super flavorful and I thought I would have more time to enjoy and come back to visit while in town. My partner also tried their burger and fries and decided to stop by the restaurant only to find out they closed a couple of months ago. It was worth the visit when we went there back in December.z The place was cute and it felt comfy.
