I don't like Indian food. My friends make fun of me for it because I am obviously of Indian origin (unless you're an elderly Latino person, then I am Dominican). It usually wreaks havoc with my insides and I find myself making more noise than a steam engine after eating it. However, I love this place. Not only is it conveniently located next to my temple, so I can sustain my body after sustaining my spirit, the food is ridiculously good. I know, a little off from what my initial sentence proclaimed, but I make an exception for Dosa Hut. Their masala dosas are always hot and fresh, without any greasiness tainting the texture of the dosa. Their idli is fluffy, the sambar is perfectly spiced and there's tons of coconut chutney to be had. It's vegetarian, but it's better than any chicken tikka masala (puke) that I've ever had. read more

Onion pakoda represent the duality of life: a moist center, crisp exterior. If the spice becomes overwhelming, cool your mouth with some coconut chutney, a creamy-ish treat that won't offend those with vegan or lactose-digestion problems. While sambar is traditionally served as an accompaniment to dosas, I also traditionally reject it, as most versions I've encountered are sloppy, watered-down after-thoughts lacking flavor, color, or appeal. However, at Dosa Hutt, the spicy, slightly tangy sambar earns its right to be in my stomach. Atmosphere? Service? There's a humble front counter where you place your order and pick up your meal, then eat on some plastic furniture. But if you're paying attention to these details, then you don't understand the True Meaning of Dosa Hutt, which is to shovel food into your face like an animal. While you can request to take your order to-go, expect additional charges to cover the cost of packaging (an admittedly confusing policy as food is also served on disposable styrofoam plates when you dine-in). Regardless of the rationale, I hope the added take-out charges discourage diners from choosing this option, as I've found that their food quality atrophies pretty rapidly when sitting in a box for only a few minutes. Yum, yum and yum! This is one of those places that I happily go out of my way to visit. One of those places that you get excited when you go, like a little kid going to the ice cream shop. Mmmmm, dosa. If you've never had a dosa or maybe are little afraid, go here and have one today! Some of them are pretty spicy and others are mild. The guy behind the counter will happily help you navigate the menu. If you like the spicier side of things, go for the spicy, it's pretty hot, but flavorful hot and delicious. You'll also get a healthy serving of sambar and coconut chutney on the side. The coconut chutney will help balance out the heat. As a note, you're eyes can be deceiving when it comes to a dosa. It may look like a thin, crispy pastry that you could easily eat a couple of, but they are quite filling. The other items on the menu are yummy too. The mixed vegetable uthappam is great with lots of veggies and a pancake like heft that fills you up. My boyfriend likes the Mango Lassi and gets it every time we go. Between us both we've had quite a few of the dosa's and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is pretty shabby, but DO NOT let that deter you. When you go to an Indian restaurant and all of the other customers are the local Indians, you know you're going to get some good food. And each time I've been there, it's been busy. We like to sit there a bit, watch the locals and try different things on the menu, and while we're doing this there people going in and out like crazy. I do recall always being a little surprised by the price. The prices do seam a little high, considering the ingredients, the number of customers and the shabbiness of the place, but no worries, I'm always happy to support a locally owned and operated place with great product. There is an amazing temple being built just behind it. It may be finished by now. It's worth going to the neighborhood just to see the temple. Dosa Hutt is a no-brainer for anyone who has to cater to a vegetarian guest. First off, everything here is vegetarian. Secondly, everything here is delicious. The only caveat is that you simply SHOULD NOT bring your food to go. Dosa was meant to be enjoyed on the spot, fresh off the griddle. you will end up with a soggy spongy mush if you bring it home to enjoy merely 20 minutes later. Just scarf this baby down on the spot. But do it slow. Do it... sexy. Try the Masala Dosa and grab a bottle of Fanta straight from India. Fanta (and every other soft drink) that's not made in the USA is so delicious. read more

Oh. My. Dosa. I work at Flushing Hospital and one lunch I ventured into this simple, clean restaurant in the shadow of a Hindu temple without one clue what a dosa was. However, once I tried their masala dosa, my world was rocked. Now, whenever explaining what it is to others (a crepe made with rice/lentil flour and various fillings), my mouth just cant help salivate at the thought of these crisp, flavorful dosas. Since then I have strayed from masala once or twice but usually its my go to. The onion rava, butter and cheese dosa are also amazing. And so CHEAP! At the recommendation of another customer I got the "idly in a bowl". They are steamed lentil flour dumplings and they put it in a bowl of hot sambar. It is absolutely fantastic! The idly are light and fluffy with is perfect to soak up all the delicious sambar. Forget chicken noodle soup, I eat this when I am feeling stuffy and it clears my sinuses right up! Mmmmmm good :) usually I get it to take home after my dosa lunch. It travels great. Mango lassi, always a good choice. Especially on a hot day. By far the best dosa I've ever had. Rocked out the mysore and masala dosas with sambar and coconut chutney. Both were excellent, but I liked the extra spice in the mysore dosa a little more. The crunchy outer layer gives way to the light fluffy inside and savory potato filling. Perfectly executed. Coconut chutney and sambar were also bursting with flavor and spice. Enough to you make you sweat a little, or a lot, however you get down. Thought I knew what each of these dishes was supposed to taste like until I went to Dosa Hutt and found out I had never had real South Indian food. About 35 min subway ride from Manhattan right in Flushing. Easy to find, clean decor with very friendly staff. Mostly, I love the fact that the restaurant is adapting the environmentally friendly options and compostable to-go containers. Hands down the best Masala Dosa and the Mango Lassi! Rolled ice cream is now offered here at Dosa Hutt! They call it curly ice cream and have flavors like mango, pineapple, lychee, dates, Oreo chocolate, pistachio. I got the almond saffron and it reminded me of chilled kulfi. They're limited in their toppings, the two that are available are whipped cream and sprinkles. I'm here about 3 or 4 times a week, if you see me smile and wave. I have been going to this place since I was 5 years old, and it is still the treat that it was then. Highly Recommended: Puran Pooli (if they are not listed just ask if they're ready, sometimes he forgets to put the sign up) and Pondicherry Masala Dosa. If you go with a friend grab 2 puran pooli's, one Pondicherry masala Dosa or super healthy dosa to share and two drinks of your choice. For dessert try the Ras Malai. The ambiance (fast food restaurant) is nothing to brag about and all the food comes on styrofoam plates, but the food is incredibly cheap so I guess it's a fair trade. The service was really friendly and the guy behind the counter told me I could park my car in their parking lot, as it would be safer there. "Their" area seemed to be part their property and part sidewalk, but I ended up finding a space on the street. Either way, very thoughtful. I couldn't decide on an appetizer so I got a two item combo described as "1 iddly, and one (something I forgot the name of) in a bowl". Sounds weird, but that's exactly what it was. Two big lumps of fried something (I believe one was lentil flour and one wheat flour), in a bowl with hot, spicy sambar poured over it. I wasn't very impressed with either of the fried items but the soup was good. I think this cost about $4. For my entree, I got the spinach dosa. The employee asked if I wanted some potato or something in it or if I just wanted spinach. As he mentioned no additional cost, and that a few other dosa options came with multiple fillings that were the same cost as the spinach dosa, I assumed there would be no extra charge. Well, when I got the bill, I saw he charged me $1 extra. It's not the end of the world, but it would have been considerate to tell me it would cost more, as I was already ordering a lot of food and didn't really need the potatoes. The dosa itself was good, as was the coconut chutney it came with. I grabbed the Masala dosa with lentil stew that came with some kind of green stuff for $4 here. It's actually a really filling meal, and cheap, but it felt kind of lacking in flavor for me. It's great that it was mostly Indian families here, but I expected a bit more. I got the more mild version as I don't enjoy the kind of spicy that burns all the way down (as well as on the way out), but I still got that heat in the mild version. I can only imagine how spicy the hot version is. I'm not a vegetarian or vegan or gluten-free eater or any of that, and I much prefer meat in my dishes, but I can still appreciate meals without meat in them, and this wasn't it. I'll definitely be back to try something else when I'm in the neighborhood, but I felt like the high rating didn't justify the dosa. Love this place! Me and my boyfriend come here all the time. Always great service and smiling faces when we walk through the door. Their food is amazing. So fresh and the spices are just right. We love the spinach and cheese masala and samosas! Mmm during the summer time their ice cream is deelish. I really love one of their sweet snacks...i forgot the name of it but it looks like it's sugar coated...so good. If there is only one reason you can think of to schlep out to Flushing this weekend, let it be the best dosa in the city. If you think Dosa Guy cornered the market, you've obviously been missing the real stuff, though the Dosa Hutt's charms are not for the faint of heart. It's an epic schlep (my journey involved a long ride on the 7 and followed by a sweaty trek on the Q27 bus) but you should be thinking of this as a destination anyway. It's the journey (not to mention the UN blue laminate decor and the bustling local ambiance) that makes the Hutt special. Here, they serve the sambar in Dixie cups because their sambar is so esophagus-scalding good, it needs no fussing up. The dosas are light and perfectly crisp, the thick, spicy chai is bottomless and with the Ganesha Hindu Temple right next door, there's never a dull moment. Dosa Hutt is of the treasures of Queens that I discovered while looking for somewhere to enjoy a vegetarian meal with my mentee who never had Indian food before. Perhaps it is the proximity to the famed Ganesh Temple in Flushing that lends to dishes that are truly food for the Gods and Goddesses! We tried just about everything on the menu and wish our stomachs could hold more. Amazing dosas and ambiance to make you feel like you're back in India. I love this little hole in the wall spot that really does a fine job of hitting the spot. The service is super fast and the staff and cooks are very accommodating to your needs. The flavors are a treat to your taste buds. Do be careful if you ask for hot as it will be very hot. Every trip there is an adventure I look forward to with a smiley happy belly. read more

Grading this place is tough... I would want to give them a 4.5 star if possible but i will stick with 4 star for now. The restaurant is a very simple, no frills type of a place. There aren't any servers or fancy dining tables/ chair. Very simple and functional place. You go to the counter and order everything that you want and they write it down in a paper and pen and give you a number. (Ours was 29 tonight) Everytime an item you ordered is ready, they will shout out the number. Twenty nine... Twenty NINE - TWENTY NINE.... etc. We sat relatively close so it was not a problem, i don't think most people would have trouble hearing it as the place is small and they announce is it in high decibels. Order breakdown Appetizers - Medhu vada served with chutney and sambar (The guy in the desk kindly informed us with a smile that they were out of many other so we took a choice based on what was available) Entree - Low Calorie dosa with olives, onions, tomatoes / Masala dosa / Spicy Uthappam Drinks - Elephant house Ginger beer (Authentic Sri Lankan drink) and 2 Bru coffee. Dessert - Coconut barfi box to go. (SOOOOO Good!) *** Food was good, not too greasy and tasted almost home made. It was not great but i totally appreciated the portion and taste. Decent Dosa I think i had the onion rava mysore masala dosa. I might be missing something but the Dosa Hutt didn't live up to my expectations. They also charge 50 cents if you want to take your food to go. I guess they are just trying to make their customers stay and eat their dosas right out the kitchen. Afterall, a dosa isn't really meant to be taken out because it will get soggy o the way home. Although, the dosa didn't blow my mind, I did enjoy the soup that came along with it. This place is located at a south Asian ethnic neighborhood, a kind of no non-sense kind of eatery, they don't try to be something they're not. They know what they're good at, and they do it very well. That being said, their Masala Dosa is authentic, tasty, highly addictive and cheap at $3.95. Places like this, is what make eating out at Flushing great, full of small enclaves of different ethnic minorities. So many great reviews for this place so I gave this place a try.. I ate the Pondicherry masala dosa with coconut chutney and sambar plus some mango drink... It was very disappointing, I regret eating it... The mango drink was room temperature and not very good. I wish I got snapple instead.. Pondicherry with the coconut sauce was just spicy and tasteless.. The sombar was not good.. It's spicy and tasteless.. I feel sick afterwards. I don't think it's for everyone.. This is one of my favorite Dosa joint in the town. I usually get Rava Masala Dosa, sometime I haven't got the best quality crispy Dosa, thats why I gave 4 stars. Went again today for lunch(1 PM on a Monday) and it was empty when I got there. Filled up quickly, when it got a little later, though. This is just in addition to the Ordered idli in a bowl which, I think, is a fermented lentil pancake type thing in sambar(a spicy vegetable stew, according to Wiki - this stuff is delicious). Its good but its good because the sambar is delicious. The idli is just.. well, a lentil pancake. I've seen a lot of the Indians in here eating it so I figured I'd give it a try but I'll stick with the other goods from now on I think. Pondicherry masala dosa was good, like every other dosa here apparently, but not my favorite. Masala and mysore masala were both yummier. I love this place. My husband and I had wanted to come here forever, but it's a bit of a hike from the Flushing Main Street 7 stop, so we waited for a nice day. Well, yesterday was the day. It's a bit no frills -- not much in the way of decor, and you order at the counter then sit at a table waiting for them to call you -- but oh my word the dosas are really really good. I had my standard masala dosa and it was one of the best I've had -- really crispy dosa and nice spicy filling. My husband had an uthappam, and it was also good, not soggy like they are at some places. Likewise the idli, which were nice and fluffy (I love saying "nice and fluffy"). The guy who works at the counter (I assume he's the owner) is really friendly and will give recommendations if you're not really sure what to order. So go to this place! If you're too lazy to hike, there's a bus that goes straight here from the Flushing Main Street station. read more

Dosa Hutt is a great spot for a great vegetarian meal. The atmosphere is similar to that of a Mcdonald's or Burger King, you simply eat and get out. The cashier seems friendly and is willing to answer any questions you may have of the food. I recommend trying the Mysore Masala Dosa. It's spicy yet the coconut chutney helps cool you off. The Idli (boiled rice patties) and Medu Wada (fried lentil patties) are filled with flavors of chili powder, cumin, and saffron. The sambar, squash soup, is packed with heat and if you are not built for spice this soup is not for you. Be sure to wash it down with a lychee juice and after the meal, make sure you try a cha (Indian tea). The cha is good and worth relaxing a few minutes for. One of the best South Asian restaurants in Queens, definitely worth the long hike to Flushing. read more

In the middle of a residential block, you will find a hidden gem. I eat the onion rava masal as well as the spinach and cheese masala. The crispy crepe outside is the same for both, each plate comes with a green dipping sauce (not spicy at all) and a tomato soup that i doubled as sauce. My personal fave was the onion rava masalas, huge chunks of curry potatoes, mixed with raw onions wrapped in a thin crunchy shell. The flavors mesh so well together and tastes super authentic. The sit down area is low key and not fancy but definitely worth the visit. Throughout my meal, you can tell this shop is frequented by locals and is not americanized at all. We stopped in for a Saturday lunch of samosas, samosa chaat and dosas. The samosas were a bit heavy, but the filling was delicious. The samosa chaat was a bit different from what I have become used to, as it was not broken up in a bowl and layered into the sauce, but was basically a sauced samosa on a plate. The dosas, a basic masala dosa and spicy one recommended by the counter person (I think it was the Mysore) were excellent. A good sized portion, lots of filling, crisp and light. A friend of mine used to bring me dosas from dosa hut all the time and I loved it. They have so many different kinds, and it's always fresh and very cheap. The potatoes are always mushed just enough and lightly spiced and the dough is slightly crunchy/slightly not, just like dough should be. However, the atmosphere isn't so fantastic. The location is a little hard to find if you aren't from the area, and the place is always packed when I go making it hard to find a seat. This little gem is set in residential flushing, next too a Hindu temple under construction. The restaurant is a dump and they serve you on plastic plates with plastic forks. Many Indian looking folk know what to order. The fellow at the cash register helped us. I got Mysore masala dosa, my friend got Rava. Yummy. Then we had some other vegetable bread stuff, called....I forget. Not bad. I had a mango lassi. Yummy. I really liked the place, want to go back again.
