Quality Indian food here. Prior to moving to upstate NY, I was never a huge fan of Indian cuisine, but because of places like this, I'm now a believer. Their food is classic and authentic. I've been a few times and have never been disappointed. I will say that the quality of the meats that they use are a bit lacking, but the flavors are definitely there. First time at Dosa Grill but won't be the last! Location isn't very fancy, in a nondescript plaza with a pretty cheesy sign out front, but inside it's decorated quite nicely and it has a pleasant atmosphere. We went for dinner and ordered the chili paratha, a dosa that was recommended to us, chicken tikka masala, lamb curry and minar special biryani, as well as a yummy mango lassi that soon disappeared courtesy of my toddler and I. The dosa (kind of like a large version of a spring roll?) came with a coconut sauce, a tomato sauce and a lentil soup. It was crispy on the outside and the filling of onions, potatoes and other veggies was delicious. I ate mine plain but the others liked the dipping sauces and my husband enjoyed the lentil soup, which was too spicy for me. Everything was ordered on a mild spice level, but even so I was sweating throughout dinner! Not horribly spicy but I'm just pretty weak. The biryani, chicken tikka masala and lamb curry came out with a large plate of pretty rice - time for the feast to begin! The food itself was great, flavorful and the meat was tender and well-cooked. My favorite was the chicken tikka masala, I could just mix that sauce with rice and eat it all day! We could barely make a dent in that food (3 adults 1 toddler) and we were stuffed full, so it was definitely a good price for all the food because we had leftovers for the whole next day. Amazing! The majority of Indian food in upstate NY is extremely bland. Dosa Grill does not suffer from this issue. The flavors are bright, bold and generously spiced. My standard of excellence for Indian cuisine is Tamarind in NYC, which is a Michelin-starred restaurant, so I'm an Indian food snob. That's why I am not going to focus on the food here. The food at Dosa is actually pretty good, but the food, unfortunately, is really not the most important consideration when deciding whether or not to dine Dosa. The dine-in experience at Dosa is average, at best (as with most Indian restaurants), so your best bet is to order delivery. But the folks at Dosa are greedy. VERY greedy. So greedy, in fact, that they take far more orders via Grubhub/Seamless apps and/or Door Dash than they can actually handle. This leads to delivery persons hanging out in the front of the restaurant for 30-60+ min, on many occasions, waiting to pick up your order. These delivery persons are not paid to wait, so if your delivery person simply grows tired of waiting, as they are wont to do, they walk out the door and you don't get your order, leaving you struggling to figure out dinner at the last minute. We recently placed a delivery order at 5:30pm for delivery at 6:45pm and at around 8:15pm we were informed that the delivery person grew tired of the characteristic long wait and walked out, so our order was canceled. This is not at all unusual for Dosa, and the only explanation is greed. They take far more orders than they can actually handle. Most smart businesspeople would just scale up operations to meet demand, but these are not smart businesspeople at Dosa. Do not order from these greedy restauranteurs at Dosa unless you have a solid Plan B, as there is a very good chance that Dosa does not have the capacity to fulfill your order. read more

We love the Dosa Grill and came here regularly while we lived in the Syracuse area. Takeout is always high quality and the buffets are consistently hot and fresh (and I'm not usually a buffet person). My favorite dishes here are the chicken tikka masala, the garlic naan, dosas of any kind, and the lassis. The kofta curry, lamb vindaloo, paneer pakora, and channa masala are also very good. My daughter adores the kheer. Come on a Sunday and you get free mini dosas and sometimes chaat with your brunch. The staff goes above and beyond to take care of you. They have been so wonderful with our daughter over the years. It's a very child-friendly place. Supposedly they have excellent food but unfortunately for any grubhub/doordash drivers, don't expect a single order to be ready on time. You will wait on average 45 minutes to 1 hr for a pickup as they don't stop the orders and there are at time's 15-20 delivery people waiting in the entrance. The guys running the operation are selfish and don't care that drivers will wait for food. I understand they have a business to run but to wait for food for well over an hour for both regular guests picking up and delivery drivers, this is pathetic and they should manage their operation better. When will I ever learn. Past three orders for delivery more than 1 hr late. Last night was the worst. Supposed to be delivered by Grubhub. After we passed the standard 1 hr late, we called to learn that the order was still in the restaurant. They "didn't have a car" or a driver, so told us to come get it. We refused and asked for a refund. They began to argue with us and refused the refund. After we threatened to report them to the BBB, the manager (we think) found the car that he did not have and delivered the dinner. Well over 2 hrs late, cold, and generally unappetizing after the food sat for 2 hrs at the restaurant. This restaurant is only 1-2 miles away. My review is based on a visit for their lunch buffet, but if the food on the buffet is this fresh and original, I have to believe items off the menu will be just as appetizing. My sister, who lives locally and likes Indian food as much as I do - if not more (if that's possible) - says this is her favorite place to go for Indian food in the Syracuse area. I'm willing to accept her recommendations. The very first ingredient on the lunch table had me hooked. That was Garlic Gobi, lightly coated cauliflower florets served in a tomato sauce with a rich garlic taste. I could have eaten nothing but that and been satisfied. The Chicken Tikka Masala was among the best I've had, though not the absolute best. Another dish on this buffet I had never seen anywhere else was Zucchini Masala - I don't know how authentic that is but I didn't care. The Chicken Curry was perhaps a tad underspiced, perhaps for peoples' preferences, but perfectly acceptable to me. Hot naan and fresh dosas - light and crispy but not filling - were also brought to our table. Besides the usual tossed salad on the salad bar section, there was also a freshly made chicken salad. Dessert included both rice pudding and carrot shawarma. This is a small restaurant with a huge menu with both North and South Indian dishes. I had the garlic naan, chicken biryani, samosas, and chicken makhni (chicken with a tomato red sauce, butter, herbs). The chicken was pretty dry in both the biryani and makhni. The servers seemed to mix up a lot of the dishes. They'd bring stuff to our table that we didn't order. I enjoyed the free papadam cracker appetizer with 3 different dipping sauces (a cilantro one, a chunky pepper one I think, and a 3rd I cannot remember). The garlic naan was really fragrant and delicious. I got the chicken makhni at medium spice level but I think I'd get hot next time. They have catering and an all-you-can eat lunch/dinner buffet. The interior is nice and slightly more upscale (they had fabric napkins), paper placemats and cloth tablecloths. They played upbeat music and had colorful lights outlining the ceiling. The prices were fair and the food portions were pretty large (everyone had leftovers). Indian food is carb-heavy so it's easy to get full if you also order appetizers. Initially, the restaurant air was heavy with spice fumes to the point that a couple of us were coughing. I tried the mutton , chicken and shrimps curries also and found the mutton curry to be the yummiest . The shrimp curry was the most disappointing food out of all of these cause it had very few pieces of shrimp and had large quantities of potatoes. The shrimp curry could definitely be improved. Right from the customer service to the food , everything is intensely stupid. 1) waited for 20 mins for one person.No body bothered. Stopped by late Saturday evening, the place seemed to be understaffed and we had to wait for around 20 minutes. The food though was quite good, we got a masala dosa and a kofta curry.
