OUR DRIVER ORDERED SHEEP!!! As we waited for the car, the waiter came running out looking for us, mumbling something in Spanish. When my partner returned minutes later, he had about $25 in hand in PESOS!!! He said, after that whole thing, they said that they had admitted to OVERCHARGING US!!! So: $50.00

Despite being very busy, we were seated right away, which was a pleasant surprise. The space was a bit warm inside, but the incredible food and overall experience made it completely worth it. I had their famous Hotcakes de Elote (corn pancakes), and they were easily my favorite dish of the meal! They were unique, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. I also tried their Machaca con Huevo, which was another standout. Everything we ordered was prepared beautifully and full of flavor. Their homemade tortillas and salsa were the perfect finishing touches and added even more authenticity to the meal. The service was excellent -- our waiter was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. The restaurant itself is spacious and has a wonderful atmosphere. I also noticed the staff singing "Happy Birthday" to guests a couple of times, making it a great spot for a special celebration. Jesse and his staff were friendly and welcoming and mixed up some awesome cocktails for us! I especially loved the "pink pearl" which was one of Jesse's inventions that he suggested when i needed a break from palomas... it was some kind of pink cranberry margarita - whatever it was, it was delicious! This establishment is a unique cross between an american style dive bar and a mexican cantina, with a crowd made up of locals (expats and non) and visitors who were staying nearby. They've got a bumping dance floor with a DJ who knows how to play to the crowd - he had us shaking our booties all night long! There's also a hidden back patio with a lovely ocean view. We'd already eaten in the Valle, so we didn't get to try the food (although they kindly brought us over a plate of mini sandwich slices to share) - putting that on the agenda for our next visit! I hear they even have rooms for rent upstairs at reasonable prices - i think i know where we are staying on our next trip down! Even though we were sweating the whole time, some from the sauces and some from the heat, we absolutely loved it! Before you even get to ordering, they bring out an egg assortment of toppings including limes, radishes, onions, cilantro and a trio of dips along with fresh tortilla chips. Each table has a standing bowl of red sauce that is authentic and spicy! But it is perfection on any taco along with the other toppings. So, just do it! The menu is straightforward and features a variety of birria including the classic beef, pork, lamb, cabeza, goat and tongue. If birria isn't your thing, they also have steak in a few varieties. Once you decide on protein, you then choose how it's served. Regular tacos, Quesotaco, or as a plate. With these you get to choose from flour or corn tortillas. Each plate and/or taco comes with refried beans and guacamole. Most of us decided on the sampler method, getting a variety of meats and birria. I personally went with the beef, lamb and pork quesotacos all served in fresh flour tortillas. The tacos were phenomenal! Unfortunately, over the years it has steadily gone downhill. These days, I only come out of nostalgia. My visit last night convinced me it's time to stop trying. On a Friday evening the restaurant was nearly empty, the margaritas were watered down and tasteless, the food was bland, and the service was mediocre at best. Prices remain high, but the quality and experience no longer justify them. It's really sad to see what has become of this once-iconic Baja landmark. Sitting at the gateway to the Valle de Guadalupe, one of Mexico's great culinary destinations, you'd think they would take inspiration from what's happening around them. Sadly, they haven't. La Fonda, I'm not coming back.
