We ordered from DOS Amigos through Grubhub. Now, I'm going to admit that we have never, ever had an edible Grubhub meal, seven tries over six years and not a winner even once. But Amazon was running a promotion so I figured why not? Inedible food is why not. I ordered chicken enchiladas, a side of guacamole and beef chimichangas for my husband. Pretty simple food, right? His chimichangas were really small and a soft tortilla, not deep fried. My enchiladas were unspeakable. Real, words can't express how disgusting they were. My dogs wouldn't eat them, and they eat everything.The guacamole was thin and runny and green, it might have had a passing conversation with an avocado at some point but not enough to be related.At this point I can't recommend Grubhub or this restaurant. Dos Amigos seems to be an iconic and long established part of this community and certainly appears to be beloved by those who call Hickory, North Carolina home. There is something to be said about longevity. There is also something to be said about resting on one's laurels. Well I have certainly had better Mexican food than here. The food here is still good. Dos Amigos does not stray far from your standard Mexican restaurant business model, but there really is not much wrong with that. Obviously, many people love their traditional Mexican food dishes that you find in every Mexican restaurant located across the United States. I am one of them. I I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Dos Amigos and the service was fantastic. I would definitely recommend a visit here. It was terrible what happened? It used to be good now they charge an arm and leg for something I wouldn't give my dogs. Your drinks should have a little alchole not just drink mix. The half oysters were the size of a nickel and charge 28.00 for 12. My ceviche was disgusting overcooked shrimp it used to be fresh not frozen. Me and my girlfriend ate at this establishment the other day and the service was top notch we were immediately seated in the most ideal private area of the restaurant, the servers were extremely friendly and quick as a bullet!! You cannot ask for better customer service, the food was amazing plenty of cheese and portions were great for the price!!! Definitely recommend. read more

The wife and I started going here while we were dating back in 1999 and the food was always excellent. We haven't been in several years and decided a couple weeks ago we would try it again since all of the renovations that have been made and we were not let down. well we went here after church this afternoon. I ordered a taco ,burrito,enchilida combo, My wife got a California burrito. It had NO CHEESE,NO BEANS. The taco and burrito hamburger meat had no flavor at all. I was disapointed. The service was very good but did not make up for the food. read more

Unfortunately, my tale of getting to this particular restaurant (when I only visit Hickory once a year nowadays and have no idea how to get to 70 from the back roads without help) is more interesting than my visit was. Doesn't make for good storytelling. I'm caught somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 stars on rating it, because it goes something like this: We show up later than the rest of our party, we get our food, there is Spanish karaoke going on up front, and it's not terribly crowded, because of the hour. The food is okay. Aside from what I ate that belonged to other people, I ended up with a quesadilla, because I have this ongoing obsession with smothering my Mexican fare in queso, and it always costs extra to get a bowl of cheese so I can do that. The pina colada that was brought to our table was in something akin to a fishbowl on a stem, but for somewhere between $8-$10, I expected it to be large. My family members tell the staff about my fiance's birthday, and flan is brought out, covered in whipped cream, and planted in his face. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let us keep the massive, bespangled sombrero they dumped on his head, since it apparently costs several hundred dollars. So, the part that leans more toward a 2 is that the food wasn't the most amazing thing ever. It wasn't bad, but even the other foods I sampled weren't what I would call "above and beyond." I would have been more impressed by the karaoke, but it was Spanish-only, and if I hadn't stopped speaking it after my junior year of high school, I would have jumped right in. (Mind you, I wouldn't actually downgrade because of the language barrier - I would just upgrade if it had been a highlight.) But here's the part that leans more toward a 3/3.5. The staff was really nice. They were kind enough to do something for birthdays and give us some free flan for it. They brought my cousin some milk to give to her year-old son in his bottle. And because we arrived late (before closing, but still late), they didn't run us out of the restaurant until we were finished, despite the fact that we weren't finished until 10 or 15 minutes after closing time. Is this a Yelp-er's equivalent to an existential qualm? Do I grade on food quality, or service quality? Why can't I actually have a 2.5 that stands for, "No complaints, but somewhat meh"? Wanted to go here so much because of all the cars that fill the parking lot. So disappointed Watery bean dip. Ditto salsa. The queso was watery too but very good. I ordered under the Margarita's the Pina Coloda however, this is actually just a Pina Colada, not a Margarita Pina Colada just to clarify the drink that I received. Also, it wasn't the best Pina Colada I've ever had (but drinkable) and it had a ton of whip cream (which was a bit yuck toward the end of the drink), drink cost $5.25. I wish they'd bring a glass of water out when you order alcohol because it's not costing anything extra ya know. I ordered the shrimp fajita's which don't come with rice and it didn't come out super steamy like fajitas usually do. The shrimp were big but due to their size they were a bit tough which tends to happen, I wouldn't go so far as to say they were overcooked or anything. The grilled bell peppers could've used another minute or so cooking in my opinion, I felt the dish was lacking in flavor and personality, wayyy too Americanized or something. Also they should've given me silverware when they brought out my food or prior so had to wait a minute for that. You also get a ton of tortillas chips while you wait for your food to arrive, and some lack-luster salsa. The hispanic staff was ok.. but it felt a bit off during seating, then one guy (maybe he was the manager) didn't seem that upbeat, then I had the cook who brought my food with no silverware, and another guy who was very easy on the eyes and a slight tease who brought me some silverware after asking if I needed anything. The 3 hostess standing up front didn't tell me "thanks for coming" or anything... which has become a pet-peeve of mine over the years. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon and I think I would've been just as content if not more-so eating at Taco Bell instead. read more

Our favorite Mexican Place. Great food and service. Wish they had a salsa bar but otherwise we love it.

I was there last night and ordered a burrito, I think it was called a California burrito. It had chicken, steak and shrimp in it. The chips and salsa were good and generous. The salsa was flavourful and not excessively hot. The chips were warm, always a nice touch. They put lemon in the water, also my personal preference. The burrito was massive. I ordered it without the sour cream and they got my order right. The shrimp and chicken were beautifully done, juicy and not overcooked. There was a mild smoke flavour, I suspect they were flambée'd by someone who knew what they were doing. The burrito was full of veggies and meat. No rice or beans or other filler. Really good value. The waitress was quick and courteous. The ambiance was typical for a Mexican restaurant. The booth bench was a little wobbly, but that was the worst part of the experience, so not a big deal. I don't think you can get more dependable than Dos Amigos. I don't remember a time when they weren't there on 4th street. Same food, same quickness, same layout. While they aren't necessarily the first place I would go for food in Hickory, they are reliable and I appreciate that. They have expanded their menu since I had been there last and it offers a lot more. They also have new drink specials every day. We also got a bean dip with our salsa but I didn't care for it and neither did my guest so I can say that is probably the one thing I don't like about them. read more

Instead I had to order 3 tacos as side orders and they didn't even come with rice and beans(that was an additional charge). "This place is a chain," were the negative words going through my head as I walked in the restaurant with my boss. I passed this place so many times on the way to work and never had any desire to try it. I made a terrible mistake... I hate to put Chipotle in the category of Mexican food, but I thought I was getting a good deal for a burrito there. Chico, I was wrong. These fat five dollar burritos were bloody great! Not the best burrito I have ever had but probably the best 5 dollar burrito. Before ordering my burrito I got a horchata. That stupid horchata song by Vampire Weekend developed a compulsive disorder, because whenever I walk into a Mexican restaurant I just have to order one. Their horchata was pretty good so I finished it before my food came out. Without a word, my server refilled my cup. In my head, I was thinking "wdf is she doing?!" I have never been to a Mexican restaurant with free refills of horchata before. I was probably pissing pure horchata after getting back to the office. We went to this restaurant because yelp had good reviews for it but we were utterly disappointed. The environment is not that great. The fish was so salty it was nearly edible, and the portion size was smaller for the fajitas than most other Mexican restaurants I have been to. Been coming here since we moved into the area and (as a California native) has some really good food, great proportions and the atmosphere is clean and comfy. I've never had a bad meal here my only comment is the waitstaff isn't as friendly and helpful as the once were... often I have to get my own high chair for my son or ask for refills but the food is still as wonderful as always. read more

We Love the food, And the service most days is great, we usually sit around and talk for an hour or so after we eat, and they continue to fill our tea glasses, and make sure we don't need anything.Sammy is the greatest manager I have encountered in a restaurant in a longtime.
