It was fascinating! Looking through the front window, I had to go in and look at the chocolate wares, the chocolates on the shelves looked delicious. Guess what, they were! I was intrigued by the interior, it reminded me of an old west shop. Meeting the owner we decided to sit and have some wine, which was delightfully paired with a chocolate. Let me tell you, it was "sweet" no pun intended. The owner and I started conversing and it was like an episode from the discovery channel. The building was over 100 years old and the shop has been in chocolate business for over a hundred years. We discussed a bit of Haverstraws brick history, the geography, the roads. It was really a good time. I saw a small stage and was informed they had Kareoke, for me that's an amazing invite to sing. We were actually in town for sightseeing my childhood stomping grounds. And my wife wanted to see two places my mother talked about... the brick museum and Lucas Candy store. We went on a rainy Sunday, but had a great experience. The streets were closed down for a festival with food and shows. There were vendors on the street and the restaurants were also serving food on the street. We headed to Lucas' sat down for music and drinks. I had a beer with a complimentary paired chocolate and my wife had a frozen hot chocolate, it was super, service was excellent and fast, and they had an outstanding musician playing solo. I think the owners do a great job, both were present, talkative, and friendly. We hit the brick museum and came back to Lucas' to shop. We got Christmas gifts out of the way. They have a very creative and tempting selection of candy. Alcohol is expensive everywhere, but the chocolate prices are very fair here. I hope for their continued success. They have a nice location with lots of good restaurants nearby. We'll be ordering online, but if we're ever back in town, this is on our bucket list.

They are open-air classrooms to our agricultural past, places to buy fresh produce and baked goods to support local family farm stores, and places for interesting special events and outings for families. Being the first Saturday after Labor Day, my partner and I got a head start on the apple cider donuts made fresh daily, just oozing with apple cidery goodness and never hot. Since 1973, located on Airmont Avenue in Mahwah, Secor Farms is a reminder of Bergen County's rural past and one of the last farms left in the area, passed down through three generations. Upon arrival in the afternoon, parking was not an issue with only a handful of vehicles. However, the farm comes alive starting Sept 15 with a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin picking, and a petting zoo where reservations are required, with all sorts of activities. Their outside garden centers had pumpkins, gourds, fall decorations, and mums for purchase. We went inside their marketplace full of produce and managed to get a bag of mixed apple cider donuts and a quart of apple cider. These baked donuts have the sweet tartness of apple cider with a coating of cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. They were soft, moist, tender, and tastefully delicious. The price was reasonable. The flavors were excellent, everything tasted great, and the cones were big and solid. My next visit dropped to three stars because service was painfully slow with only one employee working, and then we discovered that our cones had hollow centers. So we came back and gave them another chance. This time, service was speedy. There were three people working, everyone was friendly, and we got our orders quickly. The ice cream tasted great all around too. But... the products are still inconsistent. Two people had the ube cones, and those were solid. Three other people received hollow centers in their cones and cup. It's just disappointing. Everything was also extra soft this time. The ice cream was much meltier than what we've experienced here before. Not bad tasting, just noticeably different. So yes, this visit was better. Much better service and great flavor, but we still didn't walk away feeling the same way we did after that first five star visit. At $9 per cone, I think they need to deliver a more consistent product. The flavors are good and there's clearly something worth coming back for, but when the experience can vary this much from visit to visit, it's hard to justify that price.
