I went to Northside Marketplace for the first time ever last week, Thursday afternoon around 3:00, specifically looking forward to spending some time perusing this indie bookstore. Turns out NM is like a mall that's been shrunk down, overpriced, and jammed into an industrial-style building. Elizabeth's Bookstore is a square section, maybe 10' x 10', with 3 walls displaying spaced-out, front-facing books, a digital kiosk for checkout, and a QR Code for their digital store. Here's what Elizabeth's Bookstore does NOT have: - Any human people working there (booksellers? staff? nope!) - Chairs, sofas, or anyplace to comfortably sit and read a book - Bookshelves. Literally! There were displays, but no actual bookshelves. Hope you like one of the 20 preselected books? - Any sound cancellers or any other means of cultivating a non-industrial, bookshop-like atmosphere I don't really want to leave a 1 star review, because it is genuinely independent. And, it's associated with a writing center and hosted events in 647 Coffee (different location), which seem pretty cool! But I felt like I had to write something to give others a heads up. If you're looking for a great indie bookstore in Akron, unfortunately, this isn't it. Really not a place to peruse a selection of books, buy one, and hunker down with a coffee to read. Nor is it really possible to host a writing group or book club here. I hope it someday grows enough to move into a location that allows bookshelves and staff. Until then, I support Elizabeth's by buying their books online, and I won't be returning to this "bookstore."

The merch was great as well, and we went home with a few books and more! It was great to shop local, especially at a black and queer owned shop with a focus on those books.

Now, to count the reasons I love this store: + Elegant bridal gifts. + Gorgeous baby gifts. The most stunning collection of stuffed animals and German teddy bears. + Fantastic small gifts for the "I don't know what to get them" person. + Classy stationary (this is HARD to find). But the most interesting thing about Daydreams & Tea is their self-proclaimed interest in "Regina"-alogy. A play on genealogy named after the owners' mother, this shop encourages both genealogical projects and storytelling. What do I mean by that? + Genealogical projects: they have gorgeous sets of family tree sets, storytelling frames, shadowboxes to frame family mementos, and specific frames for family art. + Storytelling: they collect pieces from local families, and encourage them to leave their stories behind for others to discover. For example, they currently have a fascinating antique piano (for sale). Inside, there's a handwritten note from a family in 1978 explaining the history of the piano when they acquired it, telling the story of its 1892 origins. Everything has its place, and that intentional layout creates a welcoming, relaxed vibe. One of my first suggestions when you walk in: look up. Near the front of the store, the ceiling tiles form an art gallery featuring work from artists who've come through the shop. It's a unique, personal touch that tells you right away this place is built on community and passion. Immediately to your right, there's a well-arranged selection of statues and figurines. From there, the walls guide you around the store with new books, Funko Pops, action figures, and back issues--all tastefully organized. Behind the counter, Steve showcases even more art and collectibles, with a focus on quality over quantity. When I visited, Steve had just picked up a gorgeous Silver Age collection featuring Avengers, X-Men, Captain America, and more. I snapped some photos, but honestly, pictures still don't do the shop justice. You have to see it in person to really appreciate the atmosphere. Each Wednesday brings in new comics, and there's also a great selection of back issues (very well organized) plus comic book supplies. Steve's been in the game since the '90s, so he clearly knows his stuff. Hazel's Heroes could be the perfect first stop on a mini comic book crawl around the Canton area--there are three or four other local shops nearby. And don't forget to say hi to Steve and his wife Amy; they're warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about what they do. They also take donations here, so it's easy to drop off that bag of items that has been riding around in your car the last few months.
