Bill's Books & More - Canton Ohio…read more Bill's Books and More is one of those rare comic shops that truly feels special the moment you step inside. For me, it was one of the first comic shops I ever visited back in the '90s, and it left a lasting impression. Decades later, that magic is still there. The owner, Bill Pappas, is not only a pillar in the local comic book community but also one of the most supportive people you'll find when it comes to events like NEO ComicCon and helping vendors like myself get started. That said, I want to be clear--I'm not being biased when I say this: Bill's Books and More is a must-visit shop for any comic fan. When you walk in, it hits you--the nostalgia, the excitement, the thrill of discovering a back issue you've been hunting for, stumbling across something totally unexpected, or spotting a future grail. Bill curates a space that reminds you why you fell in love with comics in the first place. From dollar-bin treasures to high-end collectibles in the five-figure range, Bill's got it all--comics, statues, action figures, graphic novels, and more. It's a true Mecca for collectors and fans alike. And if you want to see this place at its absolute peak, don't miss Free Comic Book Day on May 3rd. Bill is going all out with three locations on the same property--the main shop plus his ever-evolving Location Two and Location Three. It's going to be big, it's going to be wild, and it's always something special. Trust me, Bill will deliver. Can't make it that day? It's still worth the trip to Canton to check it out. And if you ever spot Bill at a local convention--stop by his booth. He's a staple in the scene for a reason.

Everything has its place, and that intentional layout creates a welcoming, relaxed vibe. One of my first suggestions when you walk in: look up. Near the front of the store, the ceiling tiles form an art gallery featuring work from artists who've come through the shop. It's a unique, personal touch that tells you right away this place is built on community and passion. Immediately to your right, there's a well-arranged selection of statues and figurines. From there, the walls guide you around the store with new books, Funko Pops, action figures, and back issues--all tastefully organized. Behind the counter, Steve showcases even more art and collectibles, with a focus on quality over quantity. When I visited, Steve had just picked up a gorgeous Silver Age collection featuring Avengers, X-Men, Captain America, and more. I snapped some photos, but honestly, pictures still don't do the shop justice. You have to see it in person to really appreciate the atmosphere. Each Wednesday brings in new comics, and there's also a great selection of back issues (very well organized) plus comic book supplies. Steve's been in the game since the '90s, so he clearly knows his stuff. Hazel's Heroes could be the perfect first stop on a mini comic book crawl around the Canton area--there are three or four other local shops nearby. And don't forget to say hi to Steve and his wife Amy; they're warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about what they do. And of course, mark your calendar for May 3rd--Free Comic Book Day--when Hazel's will be hosting special guests and events. Definitely worth checking out. NEO ComicCon

Comics, Cards and Collectables - Canton Ohio…read more Tucked away at 724 Cleveland St. SW in Canton, Comics Cards and Collectibles is one of those rare, not quite off-the-beaten-path places that's truly a treasure trove for any comic or card enthusiast. From the moment you step inside, the walls greet you with classic comics, while the glass case and counter is packed with collectible cards and the shelves are packed with graphic novels and surrounded with comic supplies, wall books and new comics on Wednesday just waiting to be discovered. The heart and soul of the shop is Tom--the owner, curator, and local legend who's been at it since 1980. That's 45 years of comics, cards, and stories. Tom's not just a shop owner--he's a storyteller and a welcoming presence who makes every visit feel like catching up with an old friend. I get to stop by once a year to drop off some flyers and snap a few pics, and every time I leave with some new stories and a sense of nostalgia. What really stands out is Tom's excitement for Free Comic Book Day (this year on May 3). He opens up the back room warehouse--a goldmine of comics and collectibles, with boxes filled with decades of comics looking for new homes. It's like walking through comic book history. Tom's store has been a staple in the Canton area for so many people--some who got their very first comic book right there. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and swing by. Say "NEO ComicCon sent me," and dive into a world where the past and present of pop culture live side by side.

I went to Northside Marketplace for the first time ever last week, Thursday afternoon around 3:00, specifically looking forward to spending some time perusing this indie bookstore. Turns out NM is like a mall that's been shrunk down, overpriced, and jammed into an industrial-style building. Elizabeth's Bookstore is a square section, maybe 10' x 10', with 3 walls displaying spaced-out, front-facing books, a digital kiosk for checkout, and a QR Code for their digital store. Here's what Elizabeth's Bookstore does NOT have: - Any human people working there (booksellers? staff? nope!) - Chairs, sofas, or anyplace to comfortably sit and read a book - Bookshelves. Literally! There were displays, but no actual bookshelves. Hope you like one of the 20 preselected books? - Any sound cancellers or any other means of cultivating a non-industrial, bookshop-like atmosphere I don't really want to leave a 1 star review, because it is genuinely independent. And, it's associated with a writing center and hosted events in 647 Coffee (different location), which seem pretty cool! But I felt like I had to write something to give others a heads up. If you're looking for a great indie bookstore in Akron, unfortunately, this isn't it. Really not a place to peruse a selection of books, buy one, and hunker down with a coffee to read. Nor is it really possible to host a writing group or book club here. I hope it someday grows enough to move into a location that allows bookshelves and staff. Until then, I support Elizabeth's by buying their books online, and I won't be returning to this "bookstore."

As a small pop-up store in Northside market, it's a great quick stop no matter what genre you're looking for. Prices were great, and there were even autographed copies for some books. The merch was great as well, and we went home with a few books and more! It was great to shop local, especially at a black and queer owned shop with a focus on those books.

Knight Convention Center in downtown Akron, Rubber City Comics is a must-visit for comic book fans. Formerly known as The Newsstand at Quaker Square, the shop is now celebrating an incredible 50 years of serving the community. I had the pleasure of chatting with Camryn, who was super friendly and knowledgeable. She told me all about their new comic book arrivals every Wednesday and their huge Funko Pop selection--perfect for collectors! The store also has an impressive range of back issues, supplies, toys, and graphic novels, so if you're hunting for a rare find or just browsing, there's something for you. In addition to celebrating their milestone anniversary, they're hosting a big sale and giving away free comics for Free Comic Book Day--happening tomorrow! I've never felt strongly enough about a business to leave a Yelp Review, so allow that to be the…read morefirst indicator of the quality of the Rubber City Comics store. Having just moved here from NY, and specifically, rural, backwoods New York, I was floored to find that there was a comic book store near me. Upon my first entry, I found the entirety of the Watchmen comic series via DC Compact for $10, and I couldn't believe it. I bought it, read it cover to cover, and came back the next day. This was about a month ago, maybe a little longer now, and I've been back several times since. In fact, it's actually become a bit of a routine. Located less than half a mile from the UA campus, it's very convenient for me to walk on down during my breaks between classes. Even when it's not necessarily, "convenient" for me to come in, they've incentivized me to take the walk during weekends with their $1 Independent Sales, an absolutely absurd value for anybody, like me, who spends the majority of their comic-reading time with publishers beyond Marvel and DC. So far, I've met about three of the resident staff members, and haven't a harsh word about any of them. They are all kind, well-informed and decent people who never fail to help their patrons find what they're looking for, or offer interest-based recommendations to those who are unsure of their next read. All in all, Rubber City Comics is a wonderful shop. I cannot recommend giving them your business enough, especially as we enter an increasingly digital era of shopping and marketing. Support your local brick-and-mortar stores, and be sure to support this one as well, they absolutely deserve it.
