These donuts were fairly good - I only heard about this place on Yelp, but figured I had to know what it was all about. I had to livepark in the bus stop while my little sister ran in to get some donuts and coffee. She came back to report that the employees were hilarious - yelling about politics and last night's red sox game. On top of that they were nice. The donuts were nice and little. They were light and fluffy, almost good to the point where you could taste the lard in them... but I think donuts are much better if they have a good consistency and you don't think about the taste as much. If you're looking for fancy donuts topped with everything including the kitchen sink then this is not the spot for you. Donuts With A Difference has basic donuts that are done well, good dough and not disgustingly over sweetened. Small family shop so don't expect shelves to be fully stocked all the time, but that forces me to get something that I usually wouldn't and have yet to be disappointed. I am a doughnut snob, so please take my word for it if you like old-school, classic doughnuts (rather than trendy spots aspiring to more unique flavors, which can also be good, but that's just a different thing). Yes there's a difference but it's not a good difference. Consistency is an issue here - the yeast was overtly chewy and doughy. The old fashioned seemed too oily to me. Chocolate frosting was fine but Kane's still wins that game. Not worth it. Demets is a better alternative if you're nearby. read more

Some of the freshest baked donuts I have ever had at 8 am when my toddler roused me out of bed and. She loved them too. Basically a no frills donut and coffee shop. The donuts are light and airy, not over embellished and just right on. Then when the aforementioned toddler spilled her milk spilled on the floor and insisted on walking we were off. A quick visit! Made daily in small batches, the donuts here encompass the range of classic New England flavors, but you should go earlier in the morning if you want to experience this full range of possibility; as the popular flavors sell out fast. It is Donuts with a Difference - the Difference being, there was no donut at all. Arrived at 7:30, well after it opened. A few customers are inside. Zero donut. I mean, zero. Staff can't tell when there will be any. "Probably 20 minutes." ... Waited for 20 minutes. No donuts in sight. Seemed like staff are grumpy and unable to communicate with whoever is in the back. Heard several times, "He won't tell us when." ... Seemed like a bit of an unhappy place. No apologies to any customers. Multiple customers came and went. No offering, "Could we get you a coffee while you wait?" ... Anyhow, I drove 20 minutes based on the reputation, and waited patiently, but it just didn't seem like the donuts were ever going to arrive. Again, no acknowledgement, no update ... the staff doesn't seem to know, or know what to do. For example, "Our machine is broke, so we are late." ... Anything, any explanation at all, would've helped. Reminds me a little of neighborhood place/diner that relies on old customers so much that they don't even try to be nice to new ones. Ended up driving around the block (1 min) to Demet's Donuts ... which, turns out, is terrific. Ready, friendly, and tastes great. I was having a pleasant morning until I came here. I patronize this cafe specifically for their unique Gracie Bars, but the rudeness I encountered today was astounding. I walked in and said hello to the two ladies who were behind the counter chatting, one younger and one older, but received blank stares in response. I placed my order and was rung up by the younger woman -- but the entire time she carried on with her conversation as though as I was invisible, not even looking at me when handing me my change. I then thanked them and bid them a good day, to no acknowledgement at all. As a customer I expected basic courtesy but was afforded none and so, to the two ladies: I don't know the reason for your disdain and I won't make assumptions, but rest assured that I won't be giving you the opportunity to ruin my day ever again. 5 stars for the Gracie Bars, 1 star for the service; that averages out to 3 stars. read more

First I have to remark on a sad similarity I'm finding between the reviews here. People seem to have the notion that doughnut places are basically hipster establishments where it's okay to spend $36 on a dozen. That this is their starting point of comparison for doughnutariums is depressing. This is the area of the country that, for better or worse, gave us Dunkin Donuts, an affordable, everybody-eats-here establishment. They're not great, but they're serviceable, and definitely blue collar. Since then, have things gone so far off the rails in Boston that your point of comparison for Donuts with a Difference is fancy-pants doughnut works of art with artisanal fillings and chicken skin on top? (No lie, I saw this on another listing) If so, I feel sad for you. There was a time when the mention of a "donut place" would conjure up an image of a place like Donuts with a Difference. It's just a narrow counter (cramped like a galley kitchen) with some stools in the rear. Getting there around 10:00 on a Sunday morning, we encountered the doughnut shortage that other reviews mentioned. I think they make them as they are needed, and who could blame them? Would you rather have something fresh or one that's been sitting there all day? There's less waste that way, too. So I don't know if getting here early would matter. You might need to wait regardless of the time. I've had some doughnuts in my day, and some of these are among the best. The boston cream especially is what I would get here. The chocolate topping is the real deal, dark and ganache-y, and the custard filling tastes fresh. They do not skimp on either. The honey dipped is the other star. And the cake doughnuts were above average. We had cinnamon, chocolate, and butternut. They were all crunchy on the exterior, but light for a cake doughnut on the inside. I could see upgrading to a five if I come back in the future and try some more flavors. read more

Oh the donuts are good. But the problem with this shop is that you can't guarantee they will have any. This morning is a good example. I live local to Medford Square, and I took the time this morning to walk down in a light rain to get a coffee roll. There was not a single donut in any display case anywhere. They were sold out. Now, I don't begrudge the store being successful, but this is not the first time this has happened to me. It seems to happen every third or fourth time I try to go there, at least in the morning. I would love to love this shop. The donuts are really good. This place does have fantastic donuts. When they feel like selling them. We moved outside of town so we drive out of our way for these, average arrival is between 7:30-8am. And 9 times out of 10 they have nothing to sell. Someone is in the back making the donuts but doesn't feel like telling their staff when they will be ready. You could wait there for half an hour staring at an empty wall with no change, no apologies, practically no acknowledgement that you as a customer exist. They don't have a huge selection of bagels and doughnuts, but what they do have is soft, flaky, sweet, and the perfect combination of doughy, fluffy, goodness. Whether getting an old fashioned, sugar coated, honey dipped, Boston cream, jelly, cake, chocolate frosted, or sprinkle covered doughnut, they will not disappoint. Plus, there prices are super reasonable. 0.95 for a single. $5 for half a dozen. $9 for a whole dozen. A funny story: My husband didn't believe me about how good there doughnuts were, so on a lazy Saturday morning I dragged him over to get one for each of us--honey dipped for him, and sugar coated for me. As my husband sat down at the counter to dive in and make his assessment, I stayed at the counter to pay. By the time I got to the counter I saw my doughnut in his mouth, sticky traces of his honey dipped gone, and a sugar coated finger pointing me back to the cashier to get half a dozen to take home. Just went in for my first and ONLY visit. The donuts were fine (nothing remarkable to report), I didn't get a coffee because their coffee bar reminded me of a gas stations', and most importantly the customer service was non-existent. The place was empty, so the girl working was sitting at the counter on her phone, fine- it's dead in there... I get it. But SHE DIDN'T EVEN SAY HELLO, in fact she didn't bother to put her phone away! She didn't ask me what I wanted, no thank you, no routine "have a nice day"! NOTHING! She put the donuts in a bag and gave me my slip to sign, she didn't even care to rip off my receipt from the machine before going back to her Kardashian game. I'd love to review the donuts but unfortunately I've yet to eat one after 2 visits. The first time I stopped in was on a Saturday afternoon and they were sold out. This is understandable. Good donuts go fast. My bad. My next attempt was a Friday at 7 am. Before my foot was in the door, the woman at the register says, "We don't have donuts yet if that's what you are looking for." Why yes ma'am. I was looking for donuts at a donut shop an hour after it opened. I hope this morning was some kind of fluke. What is that difference? I don't know. I'm meditating on it, donut in hand. It's not the service, which is standard friendly-gruff, busy-bored Boston-area doughnut shop style, with hints of sweetness when I fall into a regular habit. It's not the selection: delicious coconut cake donuts, soft, pillowy raised donuts, jelly-filled, Boston Creme, maple-glazed, etc, as handcrafted as anything from Union Square, but without distinct flavor of hipster. It's not the decor, which includes vintage stools and peeling wallpaper (and those are the assets). It's not the coffee, which is...drinkable. Oh, wait. The difference is the Gracie bar. Eh...all I have to say is that it really leaves a "bad taste " in your mouth when you get rude service on your first visit! It took the ladies at the counter forever to even acknowledge we were standing there hoping to purchase some donuts. I don't know if maybe they just ignore you and expect you will take forever with your donut choice? I also want to mention they were NOT busy, so that is not a reason for the inconsiderate service! While we waiting for them to acknowledge our lowly presence, the two ladies kept chatting about how they were not sure if they should buy a "medium or large bathing suit" while looking at phone pics of apparent bathing suit. I don't know why, but I find it highly unprofessional when people do this stuff on the job! Then we proceeded to pay with a card, and the lady tried to make us feel bad because "the owner gets charged so and so amount when it is a cc purchase under $10". I honestly wanted to just say, "Sorry Lady, but this is our first visit, and I am not buying a dozen donuts, before I have actually tasted them!" I also want to say that the donuts were no better than Demet's, which is right down the street from our apartment.
