I enjoy a good donut, but my husband and son LOVE donuts. As such I've become more interested and aware of donut shops in the area. We've been eyeing Donut Star for awhile and finally got a chance to pop in today whilst on a Mommy and Son date. First off, I was pleased at how well stocked the case was at 10:15 on a Saturday morning--lots of good options to pick. I went with my favorite, a raspberry jelly donut, while my son picked a chocolate cake donut. A special note here that the employee was wonderful about letting my son pick the EXACT donut he wanted of all the chocolate donuts. I appreciate that kind of effort. As to the donuts themselves, the chocolate one was fairly mediocre. A good chocolate glaze but the actual cake wasn't very dense or moist--2 things I expect in a good cake donut. The jelly donut, on the other hand, was pretty stellar. The raised donuts are probably the way to go here. Additionally they offer breakfast sandwiches and drinks and perhaps I'll give those a go on our next visit. They're close and they do jelly donuts right so, yes, there will be a next time. read more

I've stopped here a few times now since finding them out randomly. I did a search for a donut shop close to the freeway and this place came up. I've tried the buttermilk bars, yeast raised, cake , and the crossaint donut they make. Everything has tasted so good. The cake donuts have a nice crunch on the edges and are soft in the middle. My least favorite is the crossaint donut but my wife liked it. I thought it was too expensive for the taste. The coffee is good too. My only complaint is the inside is a bit dirty. The coffee area needs to be cleaned and the bathroom door did not lock. It seems like the whole place needs a good cleaning. read more

Just went in. 9 in the morning and they are out of everything. I asked what they had and this guy behind the counter with glasses wouldn't tell me and kept saying "What you see is what you get man." My company has a donut club and I always try to find somewhere local and new for when it's my turn to pick up donuts. This place was beyond amazing I never had a Cronut before but they were such a hit! would definitely come back! You can preorder online ahead of time like I did or enjoy a Donut and some coffee in the cafe. When I arrived they had my donuts in one huge box plus a few I asked to be boxed separately, I also ordered coffee and it was a lot to carry so a kind employee helped me to my car the service was amazing. Maybe under new ownership/ management? Their donuts have always been overpriced but several times during the pandemic I have seen workers( the person I think is the manager) going behind the counter not wearing a mask and not performing hand hygiene. Not a bad donut, but the service has been enough to ensure I won't be back. I have purchased a few donuts here and there from them with little issue. Twice now, I have placed large orders ahead of time, and in both instances, I have been increasingly disappointed. When I arrived to pick up the first order, placed days in advance, I had to wait 20 min. This was very inconvenient, but the donuts were good, and they apologized. When planning another event, I decided to give them another try; I placed the order days in advance again but added a bigger buffer for pick-up time. I waited 30 minutes; they were not apologetic and also couldn't give me a receipt for some reason. Super inconsistent as far as the actual donuts go. I've been a handful of times and it's hit and miss... even if I get the same donut on different days... sometimes they're really good. Sometimes they are dried out/ overcooked/ stale. Maybe the trick is going in the morning instead of going at night when I usually do. I think they need to refresh their stock more often if they want to pull off the 24/7 thing. I also question their sanitation practices. Like one time I went in, the lady was working on a ladder doing something to the ceiling, hopped down, didn't wash her hands, didn't put on gloves, used tongs but still kind of touched my donut. I made her wash her hands and get me a new one, and I was made to feel bad in the situation. Donut star is a cool little shop. Open 24 hours with many options for donuts and sandwiches. You can tell the employees do care about customer satisfaction. The split maple bar with custard filling is mind blowing. (Assuming they have any ready, or you can talk someone into making you one) Depending on the time of the day, you will have a wide selection of fresh donuts. Or you could possibly have a less wide selection with less than fresh donuts. The silver lining is, they always taste great. The only bad thing about the laid back atmosphere, is that sometimes the dining room tables and floor can be a bit messy. Well I have fallen in love with the Blueberry Old Fashioned donut holes. There are several other flavors as well. I've only tried this place once. I bought donuts for my work colleagues. I've tried one donut and it tasted great. However the service was horrible. As I entered there were four employees and not one acknowledged me or helped me for about two minutes. I was the only person in the store. Then the employee who did help me seem to do the minimum he could in terms of service. The price was a little on the expensive side and with service like that I would not go back. There is usually something I don't like about the drip coffee at a bakery. Not at donut star; their Broadway blend is bold and smooth at the same time. It goes well with cheese danish, ham and cheese croissant, and frosted donuts. Not that I ate them all at the same time. It will be a work in progress. the staff is casually friendly and makes you feel welcome just by the way they look at you and smile. Hard to like this place when there's only 2 donuts on display when my wife and went there on a Friday night at 9.30pm. One was a plain donut and the other was a lemon filled jelly donut. Both my least favorite. The person working there said she'd have donuts ready in about an hour. Make donuts ready for your customers especially since donuts do go bad quickly. We'd come back for donuts at 1030pm but we went to sleep by then. A 24 hour donut shop should always have a decent supply on display. I want to like this place because great donuts are hard to find in The Salt Lake Valley, but it's not good. Ive even given it 4 or 5 visits to see if it will get better. Sadly, it hasn't. The glazed donuts look good, but are heavy and taste oily and leave a greasy film on the roof of your mouth. Same with the cake ones. The maple bars were ok. I haven't tried every donut, but the ones i have are sub par. The tables are never clean, their soda machine had been broken the 2 times I've come here.
