A gourmet hot dog café is a strange concept to me because, really, how different can a gourmet hot…read moredog be from an everyday hot dog? I mean, it's always just going to be a hot dog in a bun, right? After visiting Hot Dog Style a couple of times, I'm still not convinced that this is untrue. However, gourmet or not, hot dogs are delicious. Hot Dog Style opened up a few months ago in the Brunswick Central complex, offering a menu of gourmet hot dogs with Italian, Mexican, and Caribbean influences to name a few. Their menu also includes wraps, arepas and grilled corn. The hot dogs I've had there have been good and the prices are reasonable. There is not a whole lot you can do to a hot dog, but the small touches they add to theirs (such as crumbled potato chips over the top) give them that edge over your home made variety. Next time you're craving a hot dog, give them a go.

Hot dogs don't have to be boring or tasteless! And this one proves my point. Various styles of hot dogs I love the Caribbean one - a crazy Colombian hot dog served with chimichurri (cilantro, garlic & olive oil sauce), mayo, pineapple salsa and crushed potato crisps.... each creating a different taste and texture. That was the most fancy and delicious hot dog I've ever had in my life. Portion is satisfying. Other styles available: German, Greek, Hawaiian, Aussie, Mexican etc.. The concept is pretty unique... Until they come up with an Asian dog (that would be awesome though), you can try their super exotic fruits smoothies (lulo, soursop..). Service was fine - they give you enough attention. Price range isn't bad - it is cheap but good value for money. Overall - it is a decent eatery! I heard the Chicken Arepa is a Ripper! I am looking forward to going back next.

22/2/2013 - "Get a dog in yah!"…read more Looking for a quick meal? Well, it's as easy as 5 Dogs in Brunswick Street Mall in Fortitude Valley. I don't know how I ever missed this place in previous visits, especially being an unmissable yellow stand with attention-grabbing signage and flavoursome pictures of their product. Their product is of course Hot Dogs and the concept is simple. 5 different Hot Dogs to choose from (hence the name "5 Dogs"), the NYC dog, the Chilli Dog, the German Dog, the Beef'n'Gravy dog, and the Snack Dog. There's also a selection of "sides" to choose from; fries, cheese fries, poutine, nachos, "sausage on a stick", as well as "extras", just in case you didn't have enough sauce, or want more sausage. All Hot Dogs are $8 except for the Snack Dog, which is $6. I decided to go for the Combo ($11.50) NYC which includes fries and your choice of soft drink. So what's to like? The service is great, especially the girl "Aa-mee" who served us. Everything is fresh, made to order and very tasty. The NYC Dog was as flavoursome as it looked, caramelised onions, mayo, tomato sauce, and delivered on their promise of "100% top grade meat". Just perfect for those days you want to give your body extra calories it doesn't need and junk out. Tables and chairs outside are helpful if your talents aren't walking and eating. I like that their menu offers a "vegan sausage" and that all their meat is preservative and gluten free for those who need that option. Despite this, I can't help but feel as though something is missing. Perhaps, its the size of the bun (slightly bigger than a 6inch sub), or the fact that I know for $11.50 there's a ton of other food options in the mall. Overall, 5 Dogs is well placed to meet the needs of the hungry masses, especially on weekends, after a big night out! Admittedly, I'd be one of them :)

The meat is quality, you can taste it because it's not that much fat... which is a good thing. They boast and have a fantastic chilli dog if you've ever had one before, it's quite exciting to have one to the same standard as the one in NYC right here in Brisvegas. They use rump for their roast beef and they have over 10 different types of hot sauces for those of you who are crazy for hot and spicy hotdogs, or just crazy in general. I chose to stick with my tomato sauce and mustard. For something different, it's a great place to get your munch on.

Unexpectedly in the vacinity, I directed a detour stopping here for a late lunch-slash-early dinner. No regrets. Never again will I slum it through the drive thru of a golden arch for a cheeseburger fix. This was the real deal - there was even coleslaw on this puppy. The bun was toasted to a crisp perfection, the right balance of ketchup to mustard and a meat patty that had some oomph to it. The shop itself reminds me of a fish and chip shop my family would visit growing up. That's to say its basic, no frills. It doesn't need it. Plus the food is without pomp and it all works to create a very distinct charm. Not a subway tile, wooden chair or metal light shade in sight! For less than $20 we got 2 burgers. A great novelty food night. If you're game go the Carolina Pack for $40 - buffalo wings, New York fries and ribs for 2 people.

Carolina Kitchen is a family business owned by an expat from South Carolina, Mike Perry, located on a quiet suburban street in Coopooroo. Already there is a massive following on their Facebook group, with regulars and new comers singing their praises for the Buffalo Wings and BBQ Ribs. Both times I've been for a Saturday lunch, we've booked to save us a table. The place fills up quickly, so if you have more than 2 people, I would definitely suggest booking ahead of time. The BBQ ribs are so juicy and covered in sauce, and the Buffalo wings pack a punch with the original spicy sauce. Dip the wings in the blue cheese dipping sauce to cool your mouth. They have a wide variety of different flavoured Coke, Dr Pepper and Fanta - flavours you don't usually get in Australia. Cherry Dr Pepper tastes like sugary baby Panadol, but I love it! For a serious feed you can either go with one of the Hoagies - a sandwich on a long, Sub roll - or a burger "All The Way". That means everything including onions. There's cheeseburgers, chicken burgers and hamburgers, as well as Hot Dogs. Unfortunately, during my last visit they didn't have any Pie for sale, but quite often they will be selling a Pumpkin, Cherry or Pecan pie by the slice. I did manage to place an order for a Pumpkin pie to take home for Christmas. $30 for a whole sweet pie - traditional American style Pumpkin pie!

First time I tried the big kahuna burger and I didn't know how to even attempt to eat it because it looked about a foot high. Once I decided on a game plan for trying to get my mouth around it I realised just how good it was. I'm not going to lie, this is one heck of a messy burger to eat but it's well worth the amount of napkins needed to clean you up once finished. Everything on this bad boy just worked so well together, plus the meat patties are so yummy. Others had the Little league burger and there is nothing little about it. She swapped the sauce for their signature burger sauce and it tasted amazing. The big league was also a huge hit. We also got a side of macncheese and it was massive and very yummy. I got The King milkshake and this is not a drink for the faint hearted but I just had to try it. Banana, maple syrup, bacon and ice cream. Very sweet and best shared. Oh how could I almost forget their amazing fries. We got the plain Jane with a side of gravy. The seasoning is so yummy and the fries are crisp and full of flavour. We went again the next day and I got the philly cheese dog ( once again messy to eat) but who cares when it tastes this good. Also got a side of smoky bbq chicken wings and they were delicious. The fries once again were spot on and the little league burger was yummy. Nice casual vibe to this place, gets crazy busy but they also have seating outside.

But Snag Stand have created a "haute dog" that makes me forget those years long enough to order and surprisingly enjoy the "sausage in a bun" before me. Sure it's fast food, but at $9.90 they pack a lot of quality ingredients into a cheap and quick take-away option. Hanger levels were rising last week when I ran through the Queens Plaza food court. Note to self: don't walk through a food court when you're hangry. Scanning the choices, Snag Stand seemed a reasonable choice given I hadn't had the chance to try them at the Yelper Party. I ordered the chicken and rocket hot dog and was given a buzzer (so RSL, loved it). My order was made fresh and my buzzer promptly alerted me to its arrival. The hot dog itself? Fresh, tasty and not at all the idea that I have of a hot dog. There was no greasy ick feeling after eating and the rocket, tomato and red onion is a fresh-food kick more hot dogs need.

Snag Stand describes itself as a "gourmet sausage grill" and "the home of heavenly haute dogs"…read more With those words I was intrigued. Located in Queens Plaza's Food court, taking over from the old Crepe Cafe, I had to try this for myself. Their menu has standard mouthwatering options on offer with delectable descriptions to match, such as the "American Classic", "German Bratwurst", "Currywurst", "Spicy Spanish Chorizo", through to the "Australia fare". Ranging from $6.90 to the more fancy "Wagyu Beef" at $10.90. You can go with the DIY option, and choose your own roll (Brioche, Rustic or Poppy Seed), your choice of sausage, and toppings at $1.00 each, (from sauteed onions to house made sauerkraut or coopes ale bbq sauce to name a few). Gluten Free rolls attract an additional $1.00 and for the health concious you can go naked..no not you, but the snag! So no bun but with your choice of salad and grilled sausage for $9.90. I decided to play it safe and boring, going with the American Classic. A "wood smoked frankfurter with american yellow mustard, tomato sauce, onions & sweet relish on a toasted brioche roll" for only $6.90. Service was friendly, and amazingly quick. Especially useful for those days when you don't have much time for lunch. As for the "gourmet" hot-dog? It was okay. It didn't blow my mind as I had hoped. The sausage (the main attraction in any hot-dog performance), was pretty bland and dry, maybe even undercooked. The saving grace was the toasted brioche roll, which had a slight sweetness to it, and with the relish, mustard, onions and sauce combining to give it a bit of life. For $6.90 and its size, it was relatively good value. So is Snag Stand really "gourmet" and home for "heavenly haute dogs" or just cleverly marketed? A bit of both. But I will definitely try them again, and not just because the Homer Simpson in me wants to. There's enough there on the menu to suggest that there can be a party in my mouth next time.

We called ahead to book a table, though when we arrived we realised that it was more of a fast food establishment than a restaurant. The waitress was very friendly, she provided us with the menus and explained how we needed to go up to the counter to place the order. She recommended that we try the Pit Master Pack, since we had not eaten there before. This goes for $59.95, and the two cans of soft drink ended up costing a good $7. The Pit Master Pack consisted of ribs, quite a few buffalo wings, hand pulled pork, coleslaw and fries. It is a good serving for two people. I am not the biggest chicken wing fan, though enjoyed them, apart from there being a bit too much sauce. We chose the cheese covered fries, though they weren't that great, we probably should have gone with the plain fries. The food was nice, though far from mind blowing, which made the pricing hard to justify. We left a bit unsatisfied in terms of how full we were, and how much everything cost, even with the voucher. I personally wouldn't visit here again, it is not for me. I would only recommend this establishment to someone who was really into buffalo wings and ribs.

Seriously, the food here is not cheap. BUT - it is bloody good. When our order arrived my eyes drank in the beauty of my pulled beef roll, while hubby rubbed his hands with glee over his chilli hot dog and loaded fries. And the first bite made the pain of the cost fade away- amazing. Well worth it! In fact despite being hungry I I couldn't eat the whole thing as the servings are generous. When this joint first opened there were lines out the door and long waits, but we were one of only three diners at lunchtime today. The cute checked tablecloths and mustard with ketchup on the tables adds to the US of A atmosphere, the only downside to the location on a nice day is being serenaded by the traffic on the main road. Two thumbs up for the food. My wallet is still hurting but at least I'm so full I won't want dinner tonight.
