Don's is great. While it looks like a fancy place designed for tourists (it kind of is), Don's has great food. Don's offers stuffed chickens, various boudin and sausages and other specialty meat items. The stuffed chickens and stuffed pork chops are very good. The offer both frozen and fresh links of boudin and fresh hot cracklin. Don's also offers made to order sandwiches and plate lunches. One unique item they sell is a large jar of hog lard. I'm not sure what it would be used for, but I should buy it and give it as a Christmas gift. My one complaint is that this place gets extremely busy. Tip: this is a review of the "to go" kitchen only. get cracklins and fried porkchop. We never bought meats there. Food: we tried a little of everything at the kitchen. I think most people go there for the meats, sausages, and prepared frozen foods. Some of that stuff looked awesome but they didnt serve it in the kitchen. I didnt get it. That was upsetting! They should serve their specialty meats and sausages. Kitchen had mostly fried stuff. The cracklins and fried pork chop stood out for me. The fried chicken was also good. The etouffee and boudin balls were just ok for me. Place: there are only 3-4 tables so sitting is not guaranteed. Clean though. Bathroom only allows one person so expect a line, especially women. Service: quick. The have most of their fried stuff in a heated display in the back. Cracklins for some reason are in the front register. Value: cheap, fast, and pretty good. read more

I hate to do this to such a place with a great heart. But, for some reason this place has set up a trap to patrons driving large vehicles. I came in the first entrance after seeing there was an exit at the other end of the parking lot. I was driving a band's tour bus with a trailer, at 60 feet long its not easy to turn around, especially in small places. When I get to the exit they have placed a metal pole at under 10 feet, so that you can't leave. No signs warning you and no explanation why. It was just plain mean and cruel. Luckily I was able to make a 20 point turn and get turned around, but only after getting other people to move their cars. The boudin was decent, but nothing special, and overly salty. 3 stars. I had a hell of a time even ordering it because of the language barrier between me and that Southern LA accent, lol. Although I didn't think the Boudin Balls were that good, the rest of the food was good. We stopped by here on the way to New Orleans. Some of the locals recommended it. Lunch was good! Po-boys are good, nothing special. The chicken fried steak was good and the green beans were awesome, just like home. Every time I pass by this place, I've wanted to stop by. This time, I stopped. In the inside, it looks like a gas station with a hot food section in the back, fountain machines, and then prepared foods in several freezers and refrigerators. After careful consideration, I went with the fish sandwich, boudin balls, and a large diet coke (of course). The fish sandwich was crispy and delicious - no faux fish patty here, strips only. My only complaint is there was no tartar sauce and very little mayo so it got a little dry toward the end. The boudin balls were also very good, and different than any other boudin ball I've ever had. The filling was chunky, not ground up super fine like most boudin balls and I think I liked it. It gives the ball more texture and you can actually pick up on which meat you are eating. I do wish they served it with a horseradish sauce, however. I enjoyed my lunch and I'm glad I stopped, but I don't know that I have to stop every time I pass through. read more

Don's and me go back until he first week I moved to Louisiana over 10 years ago. I'm not sure if it was first love or what but nobody in the area makes boudin and cracklings as good. There are several others in Scott and they are all pretty good but Dons is still #1 in my book. Don's specialty meat is just what it says, specialty meats. You don't go here for plain ground beef. If you want rabbit, boudin, cracklings, quail eggs, spices, boneless chickens or dozens of different spiced meats and bacon wrapped goodness, Don's is your place. They also have a kitchen with specials like 2 chili dogs for $2, chicken and other plate lunch items that are quick and reasonable in price. The service is always friendly and quick too. Oh Don's. How I miss you!! I used to travel for work to the Lafayette area, luckily, right down the street from Dons. Their Boudin is the best there is!!!! Recently, I challenged my boyfriend to a blind boudin challenge. We traveled to the top meat shops in the Scott & Lafayette area. Dons gets the best votes for spice, meat/ rice ratio & flavor. Some have too much spice, some are too bland, some are JUST RIGHT! Dons has great flavor, nice spice from start to finish & perfect meat/ rice ratios. I also love love love their beef jerky (unfortunately the day that we went they only had the spicy jerky- which is above my personal Scoville tolerance), however, if you're a spice junky- go for it. The cracklings are also spot on & I'm usually not a big fan. Crispy, puffed fat pig skins melting in your mouth, accompanied by a perfect salted spice.... mmmmmmmmm All that said, we came home with a huge cooler of meat that likely wouldn't fit in the freezer. Full disclosure - I have never eaten at Don's. You see, I don't live in Louisiana, I live in California. So this review is strictly for the items that I have ordered online from Don's and have delivered to satisfy my boudin cravings. It is a sad fact of life that boudin is not available everywhere. In fact, most folks around here haven't the slightest inkling as to what boudin is. Now there are cajun restaurants out here, several are very authentic and very good, but even the best cajun restaurants in Southern California don't serve boudin. So when the cravings hit I hop online and place an order. Don's always delivers. I always order the boudin links but last time (June) I also tried the smoked boudin and really liked it. For my most recent order, I got not only the 5lb box of boudin plus some more of the smoked boudin links but I also got some pork skins and a bag of the cracklins. Lord help me, the cracklins are INSANE. I am now addicted to those little nuggets of pork heaven. Dear God, the BEST cracklin' I've had in a very long time! I make it a point to stop here every time I travel between Houston and New Orleans. I have to admit that when I lived in Baton Rouge I would get into the great debate of where the best cracklin' spot was and I can honestly say that I couldn't think of any place on the east of the Mississippi and Don's is one of the first places that comes to mind. My mouth starts watering once I've crossed the Mississippi Bridge because I know I'm that much closer to Don's and its tasty treats. The stuffed pork chops are succulent and tender. The crawfish pistolettes are soft yet stuffed with the best crawfish dressing. Beef Jerky? I'll take a pound, please! Need a vegetable? While in Lafayette for the day, our friends took us here to try the Boudin and Cracklins. They said they were the best around. We ordered enough for the four of us to split it all. It was excellent. We have tried it at other places, but we really enjoyed this a lot. The place sells all kinds of hard to find specialty meats - fresh and frozen. They also sell a few rows of other Cajun specialty products. In the back they have a lunch counter with daily specials and a few tables to eat there. The boudin is pretty good here however tonight we didn't get any of that because they told us they were out of boudin and cracklings and boudin balls and all they had was cold boudin. The girl said you can just heat it up in the microwave like we do? Lol...what? Anyhow needless to say we did not make a purchase here tonight as it was close to closing time anyway. I've been here several times before and it's an interesting town and all the surrounding towns all boast of having the best boudin.
