In Scott, the boudin competition is in full force. Within a couple blocks, you can find an impressive concentration of Cajun specialty food stores. Don's has the classic gas station setup, a ready to eat counter with BBQ and Cajun options, snack aisles, and fridge full of Cajun specialties. We ordered cracklings, boudin balls and crawfish pie. The boudin balls were the stand out. The cracklings were fresh and crunchy, but the seasoning is underwhelming. The crawfish pie missed the mark completely, not much crawfish, very doughy and the seasoning was pretty bland. Compared to the undisputed champion (looking at you, Billy's) with huge lines 24/7, Don's is a good option if you're willing to trade some of the quality with the convenience of no wait time. read more

If there is a huge line at another boudin or crackling spot, Don's can usually deliver a comparable level of Cajun foods at a much shorter wait in the line. They have ready made plate meals, a gas station feel drink option, and the cooked boudin balls, egg rolls, cracklings, etc that are offered by Billy's or Best Stop. Pretty decent and it's a good option if you don't want to wait 30 minutes in line at Billy's. read more

These guys might very well make fantastic boudin and other stuff, but their cracklins on my visit left much to be desired. Yes, they were warm. But the positives stop there. They were also stale and without seasoning. Most importantly, they tasted like they were fried in rancid oil. We didn't get sick or anything like that, but we did toss the bag in the trash on our way out of the store. On a positive note, the service here is excellent; the place is clean; and it is easily accessed, so long as you are familiar with Louisiana's two-way access roads (one of the only states in the Union to have roads like this). And the pig statues at the front entrance are also fun. I think I'll try one of the other 18 "Boudin & Cracklins" joints next time I end up on I-10 in this neck of the woods. read more

One of the many stops made on the drive back to Dallas from New Orleans this past Sunday. Don's is the truth when it comes to ready made, fresh or frozen food. They also have quite the variety of cajun/creole seasonings, cookware & knick knacks. If you're not familiar with the culture of Louisiana I'd highly suggest this be a place to stop to look & learn a thing or three. This trip we stopped for some boudin, fried chicken skins and cracklins. No complaints when it comes to their service & everything we bought was fresh and well seasoned (as is to be expected of any place you eat from in Louisiana). We also used this stop to have a restroom break. Bathrooms are clean, just know it's a solo use restroom so if matters are urgent then definitely go somewhere else. read more

Stopped here on my way back to Houston. I love how they have such a variety to cater to the passing tourists. It was a little confusing to fins them as there is a confusing round about to maneuver through, but worth poking your head in nevertheless. They are in the vicinity of another specialty meat market named Billy's, and my friend's preferred them over Don's. But I feel for the variety, cleanliness, and friendliness, they deserve a good rating. Their boudain is flavorful, and I loved their candles too! I was shocked at how strong the aroma was. Definitely worth trying if you've never been. read more

Try to stop here going east or west of Interstate 10. Love their cracklings. Their lunch specials are good. Friendly staff. A must stop

Convenient location near i10 exit, with friendly staff and ample frozen boucherie goods. The disposable ice chests for sale make picking up frozen prepared meats and meals for transport a breeze. However, the soggy cracklin, bland boudin and undercooked (doughy) chicken cracklin we experienced brings this establishment its due rating. read more

I travel to Lafayette for a couple of weeks each year for work, and when I'm there, this is almost a daily stop. I have never had anything remotely bad here; whether their hot food or their market and frozen stuff, everything is fantastic. I'm only mad that I didn't realize they had hot food the first couple of times I went here. Their boudin balls are massive and excellent - especially the seafood ones - and they are so much cheaper than what you might find in any restaurant in town. Their frozen boudin is great. Just all of it is excellent, really. My only complaint is the unnecessary order food in the back, go up front to pay for it, go back to reorder and get the food - isn't there an easier way? read more

Stopped here while on a pit stop for food and a breather to get out of the car. While we waited on seafood for pickup next door, I sauntered over here to check it out. I ended up leaving with a pound bag of cracklins. First time having them - really loved the spice in them with just the right kick and spice. Staff inside were friendly and did a great job of keeping eye contact with those waiting in line and getting to everyone quickly. read more

I think most of us Southerners know that Scott, Louisiana is the 'Boudin Capital of the World'. There is no shortage of signs up and down I-10 in either direction advertising some kind of boudin place. That's fine and dandy, but there are the ok places and then there are the popular, heavy hitters like Don's and a handful of other places. I try and switch it up every time I drive to New Orleans or surrounding areas. My last trip I made sure to cross Don's off my to try list. This place is right off the highway and the easiest to get to. It looks nice from the outside and is spacious inside. It had gas station vibes to it with aisles of goodies and local items. What they are known for is their boudin and cracklins. It is set up kind of weird as you have your cracklins served on one side and other hot items on the other side of the store. I didn't like making multiple transactions ate one spot. We scoped out the hot section first. They serve cooked boudin links, sausage, different varieties of boudin balls and egg rolls, pork chops and all kind of other hot food. I was there for the boudin balls. I went with both the regular and pepper jack balls. I also got a link of sausage as well. I then made my way back to cracklins side and got a bag of pork cracklins to munch on for the ride home. Cracklins are fried pieces of pork that consists of both meat and skin. It's a nice, crunchy snack when done right. Here, I thought the consistency was great but it lacked major seasoning and I got bored with them pretty quick. My friends also got the chicken cracklins which were so much tastier and something I would get next time. It's definitely an indulgence and not something I would get often. Boudin is a Cajun sausage consisting of pork, rice and seasonings. It doesn't have the snap of sausage and typically I eat it with crackers when bought in links. Here I got the balls which are breaded balls of boudin. I waited till I got home where I popped them in the air fryer. These were pretty good, but not the best I have had in Scott. That's for another review. Don's also has many cold items and meats you can take home and prepare. Overall, I'm glad I got to try another spot in Scott and I would say it wasn't a bad spot. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but if I am in a hurry I would stop in here again. read more

5 months later and those boudin balls are still one of the best things I ever ate. We did a quick NOLA trip this weekend and hit Don's on our way back home. The boudin balls were glorious- the things dreams are made of. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Greeks would have written epic poetry about the journeys they would undertake I in order to eat these boudin balls which they'd likely think is the food of the gods. Also, my husband says the fried chicken is some of the best he has ever had, but really, the boudin balls is where it's at. read more

Sorry Don's that I have to write this review. I have been coming here for years! Pork Cracklings have always been delicious. Today these cracklings were really gross! They tasted really old, almost like they had been cooked the day before and refried the next day. Or your maybe your frying oil needs to be changed out. For the price and so many tasty options in the area, I should not have to settle. In addition, I had to write this review because I have noticed the last few times I've been there, the cracklings are kind of slipping, just okay. Wanted to make you aware. Take Care. read more

Spending the night on Scott LA. I've visited Louisiana many times but have never had smoked boudin. So just had to try it. Don's Specialty Meats is an interesting place. When you enter if you turn to the right you see the counter where you can order the boudin and other things. I ordered one smoked boudin. It's a link of sausage. From what I read it contains pork rice and other vegetables and things. Has a bit of spice but not super hot. I took mine back to the hotel and used the microwave to heat it up- would have been better if I had some boiling water. Nice taste I'll definitely try it again. In the back of the market is another counter- they open at 6:00 and sell breakfast sandwiches. Also burgers chicken and other things. Along the walls are refrigerated meat cases. They sell steaks and other meats. Plus lots of specialty sausages. Need to visit again when I have more time. read more

This place is awesome! Great variety, all things Cajun and boudin and cracklin'....... oooowee so very nice. They even have hamburgers/cheeseburgers/hot dog/corn dog for those non-Cajun lovers. I personally love all things Cajun. No red beans and rice (at least I didn't see that on the menu) but get the regular Fried Cajun ball you'll be glad you did!!!! The fried pork chop feeds two small adults and might as well add the French fries! Lots of good fried Cajun food!! Oh AND take home a Stuffed Turduckin (they sell styrofoam to-go ice chests). They do sell all things grocery, soft drinks, chips, snacks, etc it is well worth the stop while traveling through the area. read more

Don's sells everything to fulfill your heart's Cajun desires. Cracklins, boudin, jerky, sausage, oh my! Plus a convenient store feel and gift shop too. Mardi Gras shirts galore in here today plus hats, beads, etc. Located right off I-10 on the side road, Don's is not easily missed. Prices seemed competitive, and store seemed clean. Poor Customer Service - I stopped by five days before Christmas and bought two pounds of beef jerky. My wife opened it as a Christmas gift to discover mold throughout. I contacted Don's and spoke with the management. They stated the beef jerky should be consumed within 48 hours. There was no signage with that recommendation or that their beef jerky had no preservatives when the purchase was made. The management refused to do anything other than to recommend that I purchase more at the full price. It is too bad, because I picked up their brochure for additional purchases for delivery, making it more convenient and therefore more often. read more

I have lived in Houston since 2000 and have passed this place going to my hometown in MS since they opened. I always wanted to stop but would forget, pass it up and not want to turn around. I happened to read the reviews today while we were traveling and noticed someone actually took the time to give them a 1 star review because apparently they saw they are Trump supporters. After reading such ridiculousness I made sure I stopped to give my support. Bought a pound of crackling (would have gotten fish sandwiches too but they stop servicing from the grill at 2:00), got some pralines and mini pecan pies. Cracklin was good, with a kick. Pralines were good too. Haven't tried the pies yet. If you find yourself in the area, stop by and give your support too. I don't know if they are Trump supporters or not but hopefully they are. We need more people with some common sense in our society. But if I knew a business supported Biden, I may not support them but I wouldn't get on a review site and lower their ratings just out of spite and hatefulness. The liberals continue to show their colors; I hope everyone has their eyes wide open now. Make America Great - Be a nicer person! And go enjoy some cracklin' or something! read more

Took a quick trip west and stopped here on the way to get some boudin to bring to Texas folks and then in my return toBaton Rouge a few days later I stopped here again----the fact that I chose to stop here on the way back means I give this 5 stars. located off of I-10 at the Scott exit service road, my recollection was that when they opened several years ago Dons was the first and only right off the interstate boudin place---well, times have changed and at this exit there are many proprietorships selling f boudin and cracklin and Dons is no longer the most convenient one to get to for the traveler so you have to want to go there----and I recommend that you do want to go there. The locals know they have a good lunch counter here as there was a steady steam of business purchasing a hot, freshly cooked offering and for the traveler who wants this, I think Dons will give you a full belly---lunch offering go from 11ish to 3:00ish and at least Siri g the week there is a daily special. On this particular day it was a stuffed pork chop with green beans and rice for $10.99---well worth the price. The plate lunch was a bonus to me as the reason I stopped was the boudin---they have smoked and regular offerings and you can get fresh or refrigerated--the smoked are already packaged 1 link at a time. The regular is cut as you wait. Staff at Dons was polite and service was prompt. No reason to try competitors unless you want to do so for sake of trying although I am satisfied with Dons offerings. Of year, Dona also has a good selection of pepper Jack infused boudin balls and seafood boudin balls. In other words they have contemporary offerings read more

I love to travel and besides gas, the most important part of a road trip is the snacks. Having lived in both Louisiana and Texas, and with family still in both states, I am super familiar with the I-10 corridor. If your car needs gas, you have some options. But if YOU need fuel, Don's should be your go to stop. Depending on when I travel, I will stop into Don's for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack. Masks are required inside. Don's is conveniently located off I-10 near multiple gas stations and boasts ample parking. There is also some green space for those of you traveling with furry friends. (Side note: my dogs love cracklin for their road trip). Once inside, the store itself is smaller than it looks, but everything is jam packed with flavor. I usually bring a small ice chest to grab some meat to bring home and cook when I miss my Cajun roots. My go to snack is a bag of cracklin. [For those of you who have never tried cracklin before, the simplest way I can describe it as is pork rinds, but fresh.] The flavor is so good and the crunch (and heat) helps keep me awake for my journey. Bu there are plenty of other options, so be sure to check around the whole store. The restrooms are small, one-person only options, however they are consistently clean and therefore worth the wait. Just writing this review is making me hungry for my next trip home and stop at Don's! read more
