Some of the food on the buffet line was not up to servsafe serving temperature for ready to eat food . For example the bbq chicken wings was cold , fish fried & okra as well. Customer service great . Oh as for dessert nope ! Plastic wrap still covered over the jello , rice pudding & canned fruit, example #2 due to the rice pudding being covered in plastic & allowing water pathogens to sit on top in the rice pudding allowing possible food-borne illnesses to happen . The dressing (southern expression for stuffing) was so good, just like homemade. Oxtails were good, fried chicken was good. Those were the only meats I had, I think. Potato salad could use a little help, wasn't the best Ive ever had but that's truly the only thing I had that wasn't delicious. After I burried my grandmother, my family went to the infamous Don's Diner of Irvington NJ just to be treated very bad by the new owners. The staff complained about them as well. When the food came out, all came out but mine. When I ask what the problem was, they replied, "you have to pick something else." Not a problem. However, there is a problem when my whole family is done eating once I receive my food. The new owner came out, and suggested my food was in front of me, and it would not be taken off the bill. She didn't care that my family and I came to eat dinner together, and now because of their lack of attention to detail, they have inconvenienced all of us. I love Don's diner. The way they cook soul food makes me feel like I'm back in the south. Don's is the only place in town that I know of where you can get a "soul food buffet" with everything from braised Turkey wings to Mac and cheese, the staff is friendly and even if you don't get the buffet on the weekend the kitchen is fast. So I wanted breakfast with tilapia on the menu they showed a fried tilapia with eggs and side for 9.95 (I believe) and a dinner broiled tilapia with veg and rice for 11.75 I didn't want any fried food and asked if I could get the tilapia broiled I was told by the sever who was very nice that wasn't possible from what she was told . When the manager came over she stated that their were no substitutions and the policy of Diner; And if I wanted the the fish broiled I would have to order the dinner item and they would add 2.00 to the bills for extra egg. Now folks I don't get it and maybe the OWNER of Dons Diner can response I wasn't substituting anything I just wanted the same fish to be cook another way and it's a way that they already have. But the end of last month me & my mother was ordering a baked lasagna & the next day when she came home it made her vomiting/throw up because she was still sick form 2 weeks ago last month. I remember I was in this area sometime last year during the snowy season. It was late at nite and was snowing heavily, I mean very heavily. I was totally stuck. Thank god I saw this diner nearby and quickly stopped. I spent a whole night here watching television stuff and sipping coffee after coffee. I left Don's Diner an hour ago, and I think my stomach is about to explode. My friends told me that this establishment is fairly reputable, but I dissent. Maybe they just had a bad night or different chef? I ordered the beef quesadilla and I could drink the grease dripping from my meal. I had one slice of it before I called it quits. On the upside my boyfriend seemed to partially enjoy his chicken parm, however his salad looked dry and old and the olives tasted funky.
