Haven't been inside for a few months due to COVID but it's comfortable and clean, and I miss dining in. The folks that work at the FM969 location always make me feel welcome and happy to see me. I'm no BBQ expert but I've had Texas BBQ all over, live in Houston. The one time I've been to Salt Lick, the food did impress me, though I was mighty hungry and didn't really have to wait for it like I've heard is the reputation. Being a fan of beef ribs rules out most joints anyway. I stopped by Donn's around 4pm on a Friday, which meant a few scattered families with small children. I ordered the beef rib plate with fried okra and green beans, and it came almost right away, other than the okra which it seems like they cooked fresh for me. This with a large tea was $16, pretty cheap for the amount. The okra was pretty good, the vegetable seemed fresh but your standard batter without seasoning. The beans were cooked right, and a flavor of hamhock cooked with it though I couldn't detect any grease, which might even make it too fresh for some folks. Altho I prefer BBQ beef ribs these were dry rubbed with good flavor. The plate comes with 3 thick slices of meat surrounding the bone. A bit gristly and would be improved by removing the membrane before cooking them. To be fair, most places don't remove it bc it's a tough thing to do, but it would have improved these by double. Overall, the interior is really bare bones but when you actually pay attention, they keep it clean. The service is friendly and fast, selection is huge and cheap, so for all that I'm giving it 4 stars. They even carry Blue Bell ice cream and will make you a hand dipped cone. You'll have to try out some of your favorite dishes to judge. read more

Generally better than most suburban BBQ options around this part of town town, but still nothing to write home about. I will say that I've eaten there four times in the past two months, and only once has the brisket and sausage been sub-par. So I guess a .750 batting average ain't too bad. If I had to pick between Rudy's and Donn's, it would be a toss-up. Side note: My experience with their fried okra was not good (extremely fibrous and unchewable), I recommend avoiding it. read more

Quiet fell over the table as we bit into dry, flavorless brisket drizzled with a treackly, over-powering sauce you could buy at HEB. The pork ribs were commonplace. The corn was canned. The fried okra industrial. At least the charro beans had flavor and the bbq chicken was moist and smoky. Serious bbq fans, take note! Drive on down the road. Such a cute little spot in basically the middle of nowhere. Some of the best brisket I think I've ever had. The only downside to this place is that parking lot is weirdly shaped and on the side of a pretty busy highway, so pulling out is a bit dangerous. read more

The brisket and bean breakfast tacos are amazing here. The refried beans taste homemade, the brisket has a nice beefy/smoky bite that it adds to the taco. Migas tacos were run of the mill. Quite good, but on par with about 10 other places in Austin. Chicken Fried Steak is out of the freezer, which was a bit disappointing, but then again I was hungover so I cleaned my plate. The BBQ here is pretty dang good. So far I've had the brisket and the sausages, and while I really enjoyed the rub and level of smoke on the brisket, it was a touch drier than I prefer. The baked beans and okra were pretty good too. The fries were pretty average. I also picked up a large menudo, which is listed as a House Specialty. It was too salty to eat. It was really bad. Don't judge this restaurant by its exterior. It's a little neighborhood eating establishment and very, very tasty too. Lately, we've had some ucky bbq from around the area and was a little nervous about trying more. Thankfully, this place has down to earth delicious bbq at affordable prices. My place of employment is near Donn's, and since food options are few and far between in the area, we end up having their bbq brought in for lunch every few weeks. Really, I am very unimpressed with their food. I'm really not picky when it comes to eating, I try to find something to like anywhere I go, but the best I can say is that the brisket is ok, ribs are ok, and they've got a few sides that qualify as ok. The potato salad and sausage both have this mealy texture in them that puts me off. No matter what I try to eat here or try to avoid I feel queasy and bloated after my meal. I honestly can't recommend this place to anyone who's seeking unique and/or delicious bbq. I'm sure it still shoots non Texas joints out of the water but I'm just not into it. I guess since everyone is posting about the breakfast tacos, I should try them sometime, maybe that's where the deliciousness can be found! read more

The food is decent when they don't mess up your order, which is constantly!! I try to support local business but I'm also tired of being treated like crap and paying full price half made orders. Ask for extra salsa or bbq sauce and some of them look at you like you're from outer space. I've given them many chances... MANY CHANCES in hopes that things will change. Everything used to be great. Went to Donn's again tonight. This place is consistently good - even though it was a slow Sunday evening, the Que was still fantastic. I had brisket (moist, tender, great bark) and pork ribs (smoky, tender, meaty). I really like their hot sauce mixed with the bbq sauce. The cobbler was fantastic as well. I'm also a gigantic fan of the secluded back patio. Most places with outdoor seating leave you right next to the road or parking lot, but Donn's has a quiet, lush screened in patio that's one of my favorite dining spots in Austin - definitely worth the drive from Pville. read more

My son had the BBQ ribs and beef plate with crispy fries - we all loved the BBQ sauce! My has UBS had the catfish with beans and fried okra, he loved it all. After learning they served breakfast all day, I ordered the sausage and cheese omelet with breakfast sausage, with breakfast potatoes and toast. My omelette was loaded with sausage and was excellent. I would trade the breakfast potatoes for the crispy French fries next time, but all in all we were pleased. It was very tasty, however the bottom portion of the bun was very dry. I also was going to request additional sauce "to go", but the cashier was no longer there, so I was on my own.
