Excelente!!! Authentic food for sure. I've been under the weather so soup was on my radar. Did a quick search and this spot was recommended. The location is close to another neighborhood favorite so I don't think I would have ever considered this place but the reviews won me over. We went on a Thursday evening for dinner. Parking was easy and we were greeted and seated upon our arrival. It wasn't packed but there were other customers which is a good sign. Since it was our first visit we decided to order several options. I tried the caldo de reyes and my husband ordered the enchiladas. Both dishes were prepared with love and care as the taste was on point. We also tried the 3 taco plate. I'm certain the tortillas were not made in-house but that's not uncommon so no biggie there. I doubt I'd order this again although my husband enjoyed the plate. I also noted the freshness of the onions and cilantro. They served the salsa warm, the food hot and the agua fresca was chilled. I was not disappointed. The overall look of the building itself is dated and needs some TLC. However do not let that keep you from trying it out. read more

I had dinner a couple of weeks ago on a weeknight for the first time while in the general area. It's located in a run down strip center (with parking in front) and close to the Gulf freeway. The interior is well lit and clean and is a table service restaurant. I ordered chicken fajitas with homemade corn tortillas and charro beans for $12.49. Yes, that price is correct! First to arrive were the complimentary chips and red salsa. The chips were of the firmer kind and the salsa was warm, salty and tasty. The entree arrived about 10 minutes later and consisted of a sizzling platter that had a decent amount of chicken along with onions, bell peppers and a tomato slice and lime too. I started with the charro beans. They had a good amount of content that included onions and peppers along with the beans and I enjoyed them. The fajitas with the homemade corn torts was also good tasting and while my table service was slow that night I enjoyed this meal giving it a 3.5. I round it up to a 4 due to its price. A real value. Nothing fancy here but Dona Chela is a value oriented Tex Mex restaurant if you are in the area. read more

This place is a hidden gem! Found this place with a coworker and decided to have lunch here. I ordered a la carte taco and a quesadilla. The tortillas are fresh and the fajita is well seasoned. My coworker ordered the burrito and it was the size of Texas! The burrito was filled with your choice of meat, he chose the chicken fajita, beans, rice, lettuce, and topped with Chile con queso. Sour cream optional. Food is delicious and definitely a bang for your buck. read more

Stumble into this little dive, and you are in for a treat! Smiles on faces of the staff are the first thing you will notice. The staff is mostly Spanish-speaking, but they always make a great effort to comprehend this "good-ol Texas boy" and we sometimes giggle together with the waiter as we work together to place our order! The salsa is warm and terrific and the tostada chips are always fresh, warm, and crunchy. THIS PLACE IS AUTHENTIC, and always seems to be about 75% full, irregardless of the time of day. This place is one of my husband's favorites. They recently made updates to their tables, chairs and menus, and it looks good. Their food is authentic and they have a variety of dishes to choose from. The food is authentic, freshly cooked with quality ingredients. The waitstaff speaks mostly Spanish so it's helpful to know a few words or being someone who does. But the food needs no translation. Pulled up on a Sunday mourning and the parking lot was nearly full , every waitress was going at full speed with huge bows of menudo going to almost every table. I read thew many yelp reviews of breakfast in the area but choose Dona chela because the pictures of the potato's looked interesting. Those thick sliced potatoes are delicious the perfect companion to the muchacado. Tortillas were screaming hot right of the griddle . Such a reasonably priced meal , portions are huge! What would I do without this amazing hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. The service is always amazing but then again we have been going to this place for years. I have gotten multiple items for their menu and have never been disappointed. My grandmother and I probably go once or twice a week and of course I've introduced plenty of friends and family members to this place. And they also have one of the best micheladas in my opinion. The place looks a little fishy from outside and the inside may not be up to your standards, but when you come from the hood, it's all about the food. This is my second time eating here. The first time the food was good so I decided to come back. I enjoy chilaqules but it seems it's a hit or Miss. The potatoes served with the meal were fresh boiled and sliced. Asked for street tacos but maybe it was lost in translation because these were large sized tacos. In addition if you order 2 tacos it's not just a single taco your getting a whole plate. Which is not bad but again everything is so lost in translation when trying to order. read more

My husband and I decided to try Dona Chela restaurant for the first time after reading the positive reviews. And we are so glad we did. My husband had the Super Burrito Juarez w/fajita and he loved them! He is very hard to please when it comes to food... So for him to love this burrito you know it gots to be good! The Yelp friend who said it was just like Mexico was dead on. It helps to understand Spanish here if you want your order just right, an error will not cost you a lot and you may discover a new dish. I must have missed something that other reviewers experienced. Granted, this review was based on one visit. Essentially, in a city of good Mexican restaurants, this was a good Mexican restaurant. I had the enchiladas verdes plate with an order of flour tortillas. The enchiladas were good--but standard fare. Everything was executed well. My waitress was great and on the ball. One stand-out item was the tortillas. Not enough to warrant an extra star, though. read more

I found a short-cut to Mexico. No seriously, I did. Take 45 to Broadway, exit Broadway, navigate your way through a few back roads, and park yourself in front of the strip with the giant sign that reads Dona Chela. If Dona Chela isn't there to greet you (she is most of the time), then one of her lovely waitresses are. If your lucky, her husband (Mr. Roman) will be the cook for the night. If your not lucky, you'll still walk out satisfied. Taking a bite of anything from that place takes me back to that small ranch north of Monterrey where my great aunt treats us to some of that authentic Mexican food that every Mexican talks about but no Mexican can actually duplicate (except of course for the Roman family). There is something for everyone there. If your starving, get their super burrito. It beats Chipotle in size and flavor. If your looking for something low carb and healthy, get their chicken and vegetables. The chicken is thin, soft, and tender. The vegetables are light and crispy, and have a zing to them that I just cant describe. Want something from back home? Try their green enchiladas with rice and beans, or their caldo de rez, or their caldo de pollo, or anything else for that matter. This place is okay. I'm always curious when places get all raving reviews. It leads me to think they don't know good food or they have a personal connection to the owners. Anyhow, this place was mediocre. Its in a filthy shopping center ( I had to step over trash accumulated coming in). I went with the other reviewers and got the Enchilada Suizas. They were pretty tasty. The tangy tomatillo sauce with the cream is always a good mix. This place got an extra point for tasting home cooked. Kinda like eating at someone's house. The queso is watery and the guac is bland. I asked for a "preparada" mineral water and they used plastic squeeze lime. Yuck! I have traveled extensively throughout Mexico and Latin America. This did not taste like any regional food I've encountered. It's just plain Houston-Mex. read more

I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to have authentic Mexican before so when I saw the reviews about this restaurant I had to try it. Glad we did. We had some delicious (and reasonably priced) guacamole to start. My enchilada was good and the quail was mixed - the legs were unbelievably good, but the breast were definitely chewed and not so full of flavor. The best thing was the "super" burrito. Fantastic blend of flavors - not something you get in just any Mexican restaurant. The place itself is nothing fancy and the waitress did not speak English very well but she was very sweet. Eating at Dona Chela felt like I was back in Mexico for lunch. So far it's been the only place I've been in Houston where I didn't hear a single English word spoken! The food tasted more authentic than most places and was served very quickly. If I find myself on that side of town again I am likely to visit.
