I'm a big fan of Don Tequila, I've been a few times and I'm never disappointed! Nowadays $14 drinks are pretty standard for the Forest Hills area, but the cocktails here are strong and tasty and worth the price. My favorites are the Tiki Colada, which is sweet with a red wine float, and the El Picosito, which is smoky and delicious. The margaritas and mojitos are cheaper and come in a few different flavors - these are also $7 during happy hour. The food is better than you'd expect for a bar. My absolute favorite is the grilled octopus appetizer, which is perfectly cooked every time. They have the classic Mexican staples (tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, fajitas), and the fish tacos and steak enchiladas are my favorite. The mango salmon and conchinita pibil are also great if you want something a little special. The tortilla soup with chicken is also way underrated, it's hearty, smoky, and perfectly seasoned - I've ordered this to go several times when I was home sick. Prices are pretty standard for Forest Hills, and the happy hour deals are a great value if you want the basics a little cheaper. The space itself is pretty big, and it accommodates large parties or smaller groups. The decor is cute, and there are several TVs always showing different games. As several other reviewers have mentioned, it does get pretty loud in here, especially when they have DJs there on the weekends. It's a matter of preference for sure, so to avoid it I usually go during the week or earlier on the weekends (as in I try to be out by 7pm on Friday-Sunday). This is perfect for me, as the regular playlist is pretty good and I usually catch the happy hour deals. The service is friendly and quick, especially the waitress with the short bob. HOWEVER - sometimes they add an 18% automatic gratuity and sometimes they don't. I've noticed that they typically add it if you're sitting at the bar or during busier times, but I'm not sure if there's a clear rule on this. I get it - they work hard here and the servers don't want to get stiffed by folks who have had a few drinks. It's clearly stated on the receipt, so it's not like they're trying to hide the charges. Either way, make sure that you double check the first receipt that they give you when they bring the check, since the final receipt (the standard one where you sign and tip) isn't itemized. Don Tequila is a reliable neighborhood spot, with great food and drinks. There are ways around most of the things that other reviewers have complained about. A great place for happy hour if you're in the area! The prices are decent especially for the drinks. The size of the portions for happy hour are pretty fair as well. I just felt that I needed some more spice! But other than that, I had a great experience. Service was pretty quick on a weekday. But soon after I arrived, it got packed! The joint is pretty poppin and gives off a very lively atmosphere. I'm obsessed with the decor all around!!! Definitely my type of art work. My favorite that I had off the HH menu was definitely the guac and chips... made deliciously! The empanadas I felt were seasoned nicely in theory; maybe some more salt would bring out those flavors. However, they were still tasty to me. Enjoyed eating them as I drank. The chicken tacos were the same for me... I just needed some more salt and potentially, the flavors would have popped out more. I was looking for a Saturday happy hour in Queens and Tic Toc suggested this spot and it did not disappoint. While I opted to sit outside on the patio the inside is big and spacious. Outside was very cute and accommodating, they even had AC on the patio. Our server Denise was a complete vibe. She knew we were not from the area and gave us the run down of other places to visit. While the establishment promotes Mexican food it had a warm Dominican flare that I personally enjoyed. I only ordered from the happy hour menu and would suggest it all. I was impressed with the quality of the drinks as happy hour drinks can be more of a miss than a hit. I had the guava mojito and by the 3rd one I could feel them. Went back here twice recently. Once was during happy hour and the other was Friday night after happy hour. Both times we left there twisted! Lol I'm ashamed to say I got drunk off of mojitos, but man did they do a job! Friday night was very busy and lively, I believe they had a live DJ and the place was definitely pumping. The music was soo loud inside that we could not hear ourselves talk, so we asked to be seated outside. Luckily, they were able to find us a table out back. The service was really good and friendly both times. Our waitress was Dennys Friday night and Darysmeli during happy hour. FOOD: on both occasions no one was really hungry so we just got some appetizers to snack on. All this time I've been going here I never tried the grilled octopus and that has to be my biggest regret because it's AMAZING! So much so, I ordered TWO more! It's $21 and comes with a side salad but I'll pay the $21 just for the octopus all day long! It's seasoned and grilled to perfection. Not dry or chewy, just right. The chips & guac and Mexican street style corn were also 10/10s! The wings were good, nice and crunchy, but they kinda give frozen wing vibes and so does the calamari. DRINKS: well this here is the star of the show! Usually, I always get the margaritas, but when I went for happy hour my friend got the mojito and I tried it, now there's no turning back. I've been here with my family a few times, and it's always a very nice place to eat. I haven't been here after-hours, but during regular dining times the food has been consistently solid. The tacos are especially good full of flavor and served fresh and they also offer great plates for sharing if you're coming with a group. The drinks are excellent and definitely strong. From the sangria to the mixed drinks, you really can't go wrong, and you get your moneys worth every time. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming, and the staff is very friendly and helpful, which makes the whole experience even better. On our last visit, we even met the owner and his wife both incredibly nice people. We all ended up doing a shot together, which made the night even more memorable. The vibes were on point the music was jumping, the service was great, and our waitress was super sweet. We had calamari, chicken wings, and chicken tacos, and everything came out quick and tasted amazing. The girlfriend doesnt like it this way but it was perfect for me, esp once its topped on a chip. The chips were more the bagged tostitos variety but they were fresh, salted and still very good. The calamari was good, not the best ever, but still good. Crunchy, not too chewy and came with two tasty dipping sauces. The serving was a little small but it wasnt shy for the price by any means. Dinner i got a crunchy steak bowl which was very good. Nothing seemed like cheap ingredients, steak was cook perfect for me and the serving was a good size. I tried some of my girlfriends "yellow rice" and jt was also very good but slightly dry but i mean thats rice. The prices were your average dinner prices, nothing nowadays is priced "fair" but places have to stay in business and if you want quality food served well this is where we are at. Stopped by for happy hour since the deals were solid with both food and drinks offered. Drinks range from $3-$7 with pitchers at $25 and a selection of food from $4-$8. I ordered guac and chips with salsa, chicken tacos and quesadillas for the table along with 2 margaritas. The guac and salsa didn't taste as fresh as I would've liked it to be so I would probably skip for next time. The chicken tacos are $4 for 2 so a solid deal and the chicken quesadilla was $6 with a small size of guac and pico de gallo offered. Both were tasty however when I asked for a to go container to store the rest of the quesadilla the waitress informed me that they don't provide to go containers for happy hour food which was new to me.
