    The so-called "guacamole", as received.
    Edmund D.

On 2024-05-12, from Don Taco through GrubHub I ordered a carne asada taco, a shrimp taco, sides of rice and beans and a $3 side of what Don Taco described as "Guacamole A creamy dip made from avocado". The two tacos and the rice and beans were quite tasty; very enjoyable. On the other hand, the so-called "guacamole" (see photo), while meeting their definition: it was creamy and a dip, certainly didn't seem to have been made from even a modicum of avocado. If something is "made from avocado", how much avocado is actually necessary to meet that definition? Can the guacamole be labeled "made from avocado" if a mere 10% of it consists of avocado? What if only 0.001% of the guacamole is avocado? Technically, it's still "made from avocado", right? But would you still call it "guacamole"? In any case, the so-called "guacamole" I received from Don Taco can do nothing but give a (terribly) bad name to guacamole and to avocados all over the world. It's not that it had "turned"; it didn't seem unhealthy or tainted or stale. It was basically green liquid, slightly thicker than milk, not in the slightest bit reminiscent of every other guacamole I've ever had in 65 years of life (most of that time living in Southern California, a mecca of Mexican food). It's impossible for me to imagine there was any real avocado in this batch of Don Taco's so-called "guacamole". Are there any more bad aspects to the so-called "guacamole"? Well, yes. The actual amount of so-called "guacamole" could not be considered worth $3 on any planet. With help from Google's Gemini Large Language Model, I roughly calculated its volume to be about 2.8 ounces. Not a whole lot... Finally, the date and time on the receipt were also divorced from reality. The date said 2024-05-10 instead of May 12. The time said 02:28 instead of 4:37 pm. As I'm in the same time zone as Don Taco, I'm having a problem with their less-than-accurate record-keeping. My Don Taco Meal: Ordered: 2024-05-12 at: 4:37 pm Estimated Delivery: 5:17 - 5:32 pm Actually Delivered by GrubHub at: 5:22 pm

    Handmade Corn Tortillas

First time here. Hands down among the best Mexican restaurants in the area. Ample parking and lots of seating inside. Nice dining room. Had cocido which came with three handmade tortillas (woman in the corner cranking them out). Service was fairly quick considering it was lunch rush. Soup was hearty and had enough beef to shred into 3 tacos. Will def be back for some asada tacos.

Caldo de Res is fresh. The meat is tender and can be cut with a plastic spoon. Fresh veggies. Definitely recommend.

They are constantly busy and running around! Doesn't matter what time of day we go in there are several tables which is good business for them. Restrooms are always very clean. They just updated their booth seating and their table seats. Lots of decor and great music. They also have a TV so today we were able to catch some of the World Cup! Their chips and salsa are wonderful. Some of our favorite we've ever had in the Portland area. We have tried a variety of plates there and never had a bad one. Ground beef is always well seasoned. The shredded chicken is not dry and can have a little kick sometimes. Their rice is really really really good. Tableside guacamole you can't go wrong. My wife loves the shrimp tacos. The service here was slow but friendly and the food was delicious. I also ordered a horchata, which came in a huge grenade-looking container. Tried this place for the first time…read more Hotel receptionist said she'd never eaten here. I should have taken that as a subtle recommendation. The good: plenty of parking, plenty of seating. Spanish speaking staff. Warm chips and good salsa. Decent rice and beans. The not so good: taco shells were not made on site, seem to be from a package. The margarita was not tasty, the mix was off and the house tequila was not so good. I could only finish half of it. Being my first time, I asked for her recommendation from the hostess on what to order? Instead of rising to the occasion, she immediately said I don't eat meat then proceeded to tell me about all the high dollar meat items. lol I could not take her recommendation to heart. I went with a somewhat safe bet of two crunchy tacos. The rice and beans were decent. The shells were crispy but flavorless. The salsa and chips were decent. The chips were warm. I finished the two tacos half the margarita and left. Would I go back here again? Probably not, with so many places to eat in this area, but I had to give it a shot. I overheard the table next to me complaining about their fajitas. The gentleman said "this is just Chuck steak" and I had to laugh out loud before I left. Disclaimer. I live in San Diego and judge Mexican food for its face value. I was not impressed. But maybe be i was there on an off night?

Everything seemed freshly made and very hot. But there was very little flavor to speak of. The refried beans were just glop (when did Mexican restaurants start using this runny paste?) Rice was fluffy, but I topped everything with salsa to add some flavor. There was a side of white stuff that looked like sour cream but wasn't (crema of some sort?). It was slick on the tongue and had NO flavor. (see the pattern here?) Hub's dish was just chopped veg and chicken in some sauce. Truly, the best part of the meal was the hot chips and salsa. Staff was nice. Place was clean enough, but a bit musty smelling in the entry way. Don't think I'll be coming back...I make better at home and for less than $40, for lunch, for two people.
