I have been searching for a good Mexican food restaurant since moving to Vancouver. La Valentina is a good option! I ordered the Carne Asada plate, and some of their (made in house) flour tortillas, with some butter on the side. I was very pleased with the food, it was all delicious. Service was excellent... awesome even! I even asked them is there was a panaderia nearby, where I could get some pan dulce... and they recommended Jorges bakery. Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday. They were serving their brunch menu. We were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant. Chips and salsa was served soon after. I noticed they don't offer free refills on their chips and salsa anymore. This is a mixed bag for me. I have a bad habit of overeating complimentary chips and salsa before my meal arrives, so this may be a blessing in disguise. Our server was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean and I love the festive vibe. A lot of vibrant colors and beautiful tiles. I like the high back booth seating. It gives more privacy compared to the table seating in the center of the dining room. We ordered a grilled chicken taco salad and chorizo sope. I've been a regular customer for years, and La Valentina has always been our #1 choice for Mexican food. The quality of the food remains excellent -- that part has never changed. Unfortunately, what has changed is the overall experience around the meal. The amount of nickel and diming during my recent visit was disappointing and honestly surprising. What Went Well Food Quality The food remains excellent and consistently enjoyable. This has always been the strongest part of dining at La Valentina. Where the Experience Fell Short Salsa Portions & Charges A family of four receives only two small salsa dishes as a complimentary starter. To get additional salsa for the other two, the cost was $5.00, which wasn't disclosed. Refilling the small salsa plate is now $2.50 each, which feels unreasonable for such a small portion -- especially when chips remain unlimited. Nickel and Diming These new charges come across as nickel and diming loyal customers, and they noticeably change the tone of the dining experience. Fajita Tortilla Policy Fajitas come with only two tortillas! Each additional tortillas(2) costs $3 -- excessive and unheard of. Two tortillas are not enough for fajitas, making the extra charge feel unjustified. Explanation Given: "Waste" When asked about the new fees, the explanation was due to "waste." If waste is truly the concern, a better solution would be smaller chip/salsa portions, not extreme add on charges that frustrate customers. Impact on the Visit The dining experience went sour, especially because I brought friends visiting for the first time. Unfortunately, you lost four customers that night -- and with many other Mexican restaurants nearby, these policies may drive more people away. Final Thought I'm sorry to be blunt, but I hope management reconsiders these practices before more regulars decide to dine elsewhere. read more

We have gone here a good solid eight times maybe. It's a bit of a drive for us but if we come up here for any reason we definitely make a stop. Staff are absolutely kind. They are constantly busy and running around! Doesn't matter what time of day we go in there are several tables which is good business for them. Restrooms are always very clean. They just updated their booth seating and their table seats. Lots of decor and great music. They also have a TV so today we were able to catch some of the World Cup! Their chips and salsa are wonderful. Some of our favorite we've ever had in the Portland area. We have tried a variety of plates there and never had a bad one. Ground beef is always well seasoned. The shredded chicken is not dry and can have a little kick sometimes. Their rice is really really really good. Tableside guacamole you can't go wrong. My wife loves the shrimp tacos. Wow, was I impressed by the freshness and quality (& quantity of food here! Homemade tortillas, delicious homemade sauces (not from a can). Everthing was delicious and I brought home enough for a second meal today. The carne asada had a nice char on it, and no chewy or fatty bits. First off, kudos to La Valentina for making fresh tortillas from scratch. The chile relleno had amazing gooey cheese and the enchiladas had a flavorful verde sauce. The service here was slow but friendly and the food was delicious. I also ordered a horchata, which came in a huge grenade-looking container. The Mexican food scene in Vancouver, WA is just getting better all the time. The Wife and I have been venturing out to seek out new restaurants as one of our favorites has been slacking just a bit lately. This time we headed to Hazel Dell to check out La Valentina, a converted old Pizza Hut restaurant from back when they were cool. On a Facebook group centering on dining in the area this place comes up many times when people ask for a good recommendation for Mexican. Yelp reviews back up the growing popularity of La Valentina. We were seated quickly and before a few minutes passed as we gazed at the menu, water glasses, chips and salsa arrived. The chips tasted fresh, but the star here was the salsa. The flavors were pronounced, and we started trying to deconstruct the flavors. Don't sleep on the chips and salsa! The Wife ordered the Enchilada Azteca and I ordered the Tacos Ensenada, which is a take on the Ensenada street taco with fish. The Wife also ordered a cocktail with pineapple juice, triple sec and tequila, which she labeled as a heavy pour. The food arrived in good time and after Yelp photos we dove into our dinners. The enchilada came with beans, pinto or black. The tacos came with rice and a dollop of an excellent guacamole. Everything was cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly and presented well. I wasnt impressed by the food. It didn't seem very traditional, compared to other restaurants in the area. There is a parking lot and ample space on the inside so pretty accommodating. I had the tacos gueritos with carne asada and the meat was pretty tough and dry. The tacos came with shredded cheese, romaine lettuce, pico, and guac. I had the Aztecta Enchiladas, it was delicious. I stumbled across this place as I had seen that someone mentioned it on Facebook. I happened to be in Vancouver today and decided to give it a try. Yes, it's a little pricey $18 plus $5 soda. But, I couldn't quite finish the plate. I had it with black beans, done perfectly. For 5 o'clock it wasn't too busy, the place is not loud. We stopped in on a Tuesday around 4 there was one very large table and about 3 other 2 tops. There was one server on shift and she was doing a great job of covering all the tables. I had the Happy Hour Margarita it was ok, pretty much comparable to most Mexican places in this area.
