Went to dinner with some of my coworkers on a work trip to Carbondale. We were promptly seated, but the waiter seemed to struggle with simple requests throughout our meal and he was quite inattentive. For example, it took asking on three separate occasions for a glass of water. My dish (enchilladas mexicanas) fell short and lacked any complexity and required much hot sauce to be added. Today was our first time eating at Don Sol. The food & service was great but while visiting the restroom witnessed an employee exiting the stall in the restroom & did not wash her hands. I did speak to manager & she did assure us that the complaint will be dealt with & was very appreciative. To be "so authentic" as previous reviews suggested I was bummed that they didn't have any aqua frescas on the menu. Where's the tamarindo? Jamaica?! Other than that, the food was pretty good. The guacamole was delicious but I've had better. I ordered a chimichanga which was tasty and flavorful. I'm from NJ/NYC and Mexican restaurants come a dime a dozen but for this place being in rural southern Illinois I give it a thumbs up. For some reason, the chips are extremely good here, freshly fried and crispy and warm. In addition to regular salsa, they also have this really good light-green-colored dip. The burrito don sol was unusually smaller than the burritos I'm used to, even with all of the toppings piled atop. The steak isn't as tender as some places, but the price is decent. And usually I don't ever touch the rice/beans but I can't stop sneaking small bites of their rice/beans here and there. Maybe it was the white cheese sauce, that always makes everything better. The waitstaff is friendly and there were no communication problems during my visits which is nice. They probably could have paid a little more attention to us, but they were closing up so it's understandable that they had other jobs in the back to attend to. I guess I'm just bitter that I didn't have very much meat in my burrito to enjoy but overall the flavors were good. Try that green sauce dip thing, it's different but delicious! read more

First time being here, food was good, we ordered to go and they didn't give us the fries we ordered noticed that when we got home. But what we got was not bad there isn't much of a difference in taste compared to la fiesta which is down the street from them. Price pretty cheap, Draft beer offer 1 dollar each which was nice, nice personal, big downfall was microwaved food! Ordered a burrito del rey which came with refried beans and rice, the plate came within 4 minutes after ordering and the plate was super hot, you couldn't touch the plate, so it came strayed out of the microwave.. beans and rice were super dry and the burrito, well the chicken was cold inside.. The price of the burrito was 8.90 $, but for that I don't expect microwaved food though... still 2 stars for fairly cheap price.. but please don't ever microwave food, for this people can buy precooked burritos at the supermarket and put it in the microwave at home for 3 $... read more

The shrimp is so good! Oh my goodness. The shrimp chimi is too good. My husband gets those. I usually get the shrimp plates with veggies (not sure of name on menu). So freakin good. Margaritas are great. If you like spicy. Be sure to ask for the hot salsa. Regular salsa tastes like ketchup. read more

Don't be fooled by the 4 1/2 star rating like we were. After a long day of driving we just wanted a good, hot meal and ended up here. The host graciously led us to our table and upon arrival very politely set down the menus and walked away without even looking back to make sure we were behind him...That should have been a sign, but we persisted. Our waiter took our drink orders and brought them out promptly, but that was the last time we saw him for at least 10 minutes. That would have been okay if we could have just sat and relaxed after a day in the car, but we couldn't even talk to each other because of the live mariachi band that was WAY TOO LOUD. Once we were finally able to order we had to also ask for a second serving of salsa because it was literally like they were rationing out half servings of food reserves. When the food finally arrived, it was kinda warm...everything tasted like it was straight out of a bag or can and then just reheated in a microwave. I've been back in Marion for six days and have already visited Don Sol two more times. It was great both times!

I have to say that this restaurant,in the past,was always a very good place for Mexican food.But,for about the last few months,not only has the food gotten better but the service has been just fantastic! Anytime my family and I are going to Marion this has become our go to place. read more

When I'm craving Mexican food, I always choose Don Sol. In my opinion, Don Sol is the best Mexican restaurant in Marion. It's much cleaner and the service is better than the other Mexican restaurants around here. The food is pretty consistent and I haven't ever been disappointed with anything I've ordered from here. The chips are crispy and delicious. The salsa has great flavor...not too spicy but not too mild...it's just perfect. The food is freshly made and you get great sized portions for the amount you spend. Most of the employees speak English really well and the servers are very friendly. Went to eat on a Sunday at 1:00 and restaurant was about half full. Took 15 minutes to place an order. When the fajitas came, they had not been cooked on the metal plate and no tortilla wraps to make your fajita. We asked two different people for the tortillas, both said yes and then never brought them. After another 15 minutes, the food was cold. We finally left without ever being able to eat our fajitas. Our original waiter never came back after we ordered. Serving size was smaller than in the past. Salsa has changed and was bitter. Corn chips were tough and greasy. Never going back. read more

Best Mexican food in Carbondale. Excellent service, food is always fast and fresh. My family comes here quite often and we have never had a bad experience. Fajitas are always a great choice, and as for the kids menu, my daughter always gets the chicken and it's amazing. It's not like your average chicken tender - it's more of a chicken breast cutlet and it's very nicely seasoned. Desserts here are always awesome too - flan is delicious and I personally enjoy the fried cheesecake. Margaritas here are also a great deal and yummy - get them by the pitcher or glass. read more

LOVE this place! And I'm pretty picky with my Mexican food! Got the nachos grande with chicken, and as a regular eater of nachos I must say... These are QUITE delicious. Then had the trio chimichangas (3 mini chimis all with different filling) and... oh man. SO GOOD. the guacamole is fantastic, the queso has a great flavor, and their fajita steak is some of the best I've ever had. Great margaritas too. Service is always extremely friendly and helpful! I used to go to this restaurant more than once a week and ordered the same exact thing every time because it is THAT good. (It's grilled chicken with veggies...can't recall what it's called on the menu now) Lately, however, the chicken gets thinner and thinner. I mean, I understand how you butterfly a chicken breast to reduce cooking time, but now it appears that the chicken breast is being butterflied multiple times. My guess is that I am getting a half of a chicken breast now and still paying the same price. When I mentioned this, they got a little snotty with me for inquiring. It used to be a good bargain and I would leave with leftovers. Now, I leave hungry if that tells you about the shrinking portion size. Aside from that, this place gets an A+ great tasting food, great service, clean facility, etc. I just want my money's worth and not be treated like a criminal when I state the obvious. read more

First time patron and I have to say I was impressed. This establishment is in a strip mall so the restaurant is a bit small. However, the decor is very cute and the place is clean including the restroom. We were greeted with a smile and seated right away. We were given menus and complimentary chips and salsa (which were fresh, hot and delicious) as soon as we sat down. We had a pitcher of margaritas which were very good and only cost $9.99. While we waited on our lunch to arrive, our chips and salsa were constantly being refilled which were hot and fresh each time. Our lunch was very hot on arrival and was very tasty. Portion sizes and prices are on point. The staff was extremely attentive and very nice. Some of the best service I have had in a long time. Not the best Mexican I've had but the best I've had in southern IL. I do highly recommend you give it a try. I will surely be back! read more
