This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant but now the quality of everything has gone down while prices have gone up. No large review here: my chosen restaurant for the night did not have my chosen beer on tap, so I stopped into Don Pepe for my first (and only) visit before a nearby movie. I ordered enchiladas verdes and a large margarita. Both were... adequate. The margarita hadn't been properly mixed, so the tequila was all on the bottom. But they brought me some extra mix to balance that out. What wasn't fine was the $28.00 they charged me for that single margarita. I eat Mexican frequently, as my waistband can attest. That's about 2x the going price for a standard margarita in the area. I ended up paying $40+ for a meal I could have had virtually anywhere else for ~$30. read more

Our favorite Mexican place in Birmingham, even though it's more of a Tex-mex place. Be sure to ask for some roasted salsa, it's delicious! The wait staff is always nice and attentive, over the years they have become friends. They interact with my toddler and make sure he's always taken care of as well. My husband loves the Mexican omelet (don't knock it until you've tried it) and I always get the Don Pepe quesadilla. The cheese dip inside the quesadilla is magical. Highly recommend their margs but definitely check the prices in the menu before ordering, they have some expensive ones. The restaurant is always clean and service is quick. BEWARE THEIVES!! My husband & I went to the restaurant on a date night (which we never get to do) so this was supposed to be a special night! Went in ordered our drinks & food! Everything started great. The food was mediocre, the drinks were good, but definitely not someone who knows how to make them! The waitress brings our check..$107..no problem (even though it's expensive) I put to the economy being so strained. I had a brand new, still in the package visa gift card! I took it out of the package & handed it to our waitress along with another card for the remaining balance! The waitress comes back & said the gift card didn't work. She gave me the gift card back & the pin on back, as well as the last 4 digits on the front had been scratched off completely. She said the card was that way when she got it even though she watched me open the pack it was in! I looked at the card before I handed it to her & there were no scratches & all the numbers were there! I asked to speak to the manager. She pointed us out the manager. He came over & we explained what was going on. He would just duck his head & never even offered to look into it. He then went a couple tables over from us & stood there looking at us, but never came back over with any kind of answer. I finally had enough & paid full amount on other card! Right after I left I called the gift card customer service. I luckily had the last 4 digits on the gift receipt that came with the gift card! Turns out there was $100 transaction at Don Pepe's! We are tough judges as we are native Texans and hubby is part Hispanic but we liked our first visit very much! And one of the few places open on a Sunday night! Decor is very ethnic and cozy cute. Chips were decent. My fave order is a spinach enchilada. They get an A-. Lots of fresh Spinach swimming in butter! It was very good but needs the amount of white cheese doubled to go with the spinach. Hubby enjoyed his burrito. Service was good but waiter rushed by like his pants were on fire, not really giving me time to make my request! At least they do check on you and service is prompt. I had a very mixed experience at Don Pepe in Lee Branch this past Saturday evening. The chips were fresh and not greasy, and the brown smoked salsa (on request) was excellent. My mushroom quesadilla was a little on the small size, but good. The rice that came with it was well-prepared. However, my friend's steak fajitas were a major disappointment because there was too little steak. Four tortillas were provided, but there was really only enough beef to make two of them. At $18, it was over-priced to say the least. Also disappointing: $6 for a Negra Modelo bottle. That also seems on the high side. Pros: Wait time wasn't bad for the amount of people waiting outside when I arrived. Waitress was very nice and friendly. Took less than 10 minutes for our food to come out. Cons: When we were escorted to our table, I noticed it hadn't been cleaned. Food droppings was still on the table, the check from the previous guest was still on the table, and the seats were filled with food also. When I brought it to the attention of the hostess, she grabbed a dry hand towel that she had been using to wipes off the menus and used that to quickly wipe off the table. No cleaner was used at all! I had to use some sanitizing wipes I had in my purse to at least sanitize the table. Charged us $4.00 for a small serving of queso to go with the chips and salsa. Really?!? Now, if it's worth 4 bucks, I'll pay it. But this watery queso like sauce was NOT worth 4 bucks. Food was not tasty. The rice was the best part of the entire meal. I ordered a shrimp quesadilla and what came out was NOT a quesadilla. It was more of a taco with 4 shrimp and watery queso sauce. Super disappointed! read more

Our favorite Mexican food in town. Good salsa, guacamole, cheese dip and an excellent veggie quesadilla. Would go at least once a week, but during COVID-19, they're closed. We have been dining at DPs since they opened. Very consistent. Very good. And, with a little coaching, the margaritas are tasty. THE DIGS Very well done. The guys who opened the restaurant years ago went the extra mile to do some things differently. There is a huge wooden carved bar with some interesting art above - life size+ iron horses! Cool, colorful Moravian star lights cover the ceiling. The tables and chairs are large, wooden and have almost a handcrafted feel about them. It's not loud and doesn't smell like table cleaner (like some other Mexican places do). Overall, very nicely appointed. Very comfy. We usually sit in the bar for dinner, and never have a wait, either at a bar table or the bar itself. THE IMPORTANT STUFF: The margaritas are good. Real GOOD. My favorite bartender, Robin (no, that's not his REAL name!) has gone back to Mexico and we miss him, but Hernan has taken on the big responsibility, and after a couple of tries, with very specific instructions, my margarita is always JUST RIGHT when I order. This is hands down one of my favorite places to eat Mexican food. The waiters are always trying to get to know you better and are always so friendly, especially to the kids. They are always looking for things to make better, and the wait time for the food has always been less than 15 minutes every time I've eaten there. (I've eaten there at least 50 times).
