At my sister's suggestion, we had breakfast at Don Criollito this morning. This is a Venezuelan little restaurant, the girl who served was very nice and patiently explained to us what we didn't know about Venezuelan cuisine. For example, I thought cachapa was an arepa but it isn't. We ordered the criollo breakfast which is two eggs your way, an arepa, meat similar to tops vieja and black beans. What I loved the most was the cachapa, a soft corn shaped like an empanada with cheese inside, it was amazing. We ordered cafe con leche which my sister felt it was the best age ever had as it had a lot of foam. Overall, the food and the service were good. Cozy little place. read more

They fried them as soon as I order them and they were very good. The tequeños where larger than I'm use to eat and good. I liked the ham cachitos even more than the tequeños. We ordered the Reina which states shredded chicken and avocado. When you look at the pic on website it shows large pieces of chicken and chunks of available Caldo. What we received was finely ground chicken DROWNED in mayonnaise it was really horrible. It was like eating tablespoons of mayonnaise with an extremely thin arepa. Mae also ordered the signature cordon blue relleno tasty but very greasy. It was placed strait into a plastic container so the grease looked underneath. Wow. I ordered one arepa. Let me repeat, "1". At the counter. It took 16 min to get it in my hands. There was 2 tables (1 with 4 guests and 1 with 2 guests) and both tables already had their food. There was 2 ladies in the kitchen, 2 in the dinning room floor and 2 super young girls behind the counter. After the young lady noticed my frustration after 10 minutes she checked on my food. Then she began to empty my empanada filling but stopped because her buddy began to show her a video on her phone. Now why I won't go back! Not because these individuals don't care about services, anticipating guests needs, etc. I won't go back because the management is clueless and have no idea how to train. I can't blame these non-service oriented employees, I blame management and their lack of knowledge. Visited today for the first time. Ordered 2 Reina pepiadas, one empanada de carne, one mango juice, and a tequeno of cheese and guava = $20 The empanada of carne was terrible. Stale, and tasteless. Did not enjoy it at all. The reina pepiadas took a while to come out but were ok. I am used to them having avocado, these did not, but they we're ok, I would order them again. The mango juice was yummy. The tequeno was ok. Very hard at the tips, but middle section was eatable. The staff was ok. The bill took forever to arrive, to the point that I walked over to the register and paid there. I will say, that when the waiter would come around, she made conversation and made a few nice comments about my daughter, which was nice. Most people that came in, mainly ordered the lunch special. Perhaps that is THE thing to order, I just really wanted the reina pepiadas. This is the spot to be for quick and legit Venezuelan food! It's a family owned business where the mother is in the kitchen cooking up goodness from scratch, you can feel and taste the difference between other restaurants that may purchase their items frozen/prepackaged. My friend Kat and I started off with a glass of refreshing passion fruit juice (which soon turned into a pitcher because of how darn good it was) and an order of 4 small tequenos & cachapa as an appetizer. The tequeno dough is baked to fluffy perfection, it's like a pillow filled with warm cheese dipped in their special green cream sauce! I've never had a cachapa before but I will definitely be ordering it more now! It's a sweet corn cake folded like a taco with melted ooey gooey cheesy goodness inside, served with a large slice of avocado on the side! I'm obsessed, this was my absolute favorite dish and I wanted it to be the last taste in my mouth before dessert. We shared two entrees. A plate of white rice drizzled with meat sauce, negro asado (beef in brown sauce) and ropa vieja pulled beef. Their sauce is scrumptious and the ropa vieja was so juicy! The second entree was a super well made chicken & avocado arepa stuffed to the max, with shredded cheese and slices of tomatoes on the side, accompanied with their special green and orange sauce. My stomach was filled with happiness, although full, I could not stop eating the arepa with green sauce in every bite. But as full as we were.. we didn't dare skip dessert after we heard they make Nutella stuffed tequenos. These are so delicious it's a sin! We ate them with a cup of chicha, a thick sweet rice based drink with condensed milk and cinnamon. It's cold creaminess went well with the warm, rich chocolate tequenos. You have to come here with an empty stomach if you're thinking of trying everything on the menu like we did, 3 course meal style haha. Other than time to wait for the food and to pay (yes, to pay) could be faster, the food is good and fresh, the people are nice. I've been here several times, and I will come back may others because I like the place and food. waiting time is not a big issue for me, so if you are in a hurry, now you know this is not the place. They offer what is called "Cantina" so you can pay for several meals a fixed price and they give you a card that you can punch to know the remaining meals you can eat. I was on my way from Costco and needed to grab a quick bite to go and stoped by this place, it was around 1:30pm on a Thursday, the restaurant always has its costumers, it was not full, but not empty either...they serve a daily special, but they didn't have much choices left by then, so I decided to get Pabellón (white rice, black Beans, shredded beef and maduros) portion was okay and the service was fine. So the food...mediocre at its best!! The beans were still kind of hard, not cooked properly and watery, and the beef tasted ok but also kind of watery and salty. My mother in law brought me here to eat arepas. I was soo excited, living in Washington DC, these are the moments I live for when I come to Miami. We walk in and stand by register for 5 minutes, and no one pays attention to us. The owner was playing with his child who was playing behind the register, he ignores us. Laughing with the kitchen staff and playing with the other child- Right away you notice the service is not very good. I ordered jugo de mora, which I love and crave. I was delighted when it touched my lips, but two gulps of the juice.... soooo sweet I needed a glass of water. Man was I dissapointed but soo looking forward to my arepa reina pepiada. After 15 minutes of sitting and waiting for our order, they ask us if we are waiting for anything else. Yes, we haven't gotten our food. Well?!... If no avocado shouldn't you say we don't have any, can we get you something else?!?!? But no, instead the owner asks me with a mean face, do you not like it? In one sentence...This place tastes like my childhood. I have been looking at the shell of what is now a wonderful Venezuelan restaurant for a couple of months now, waiting in anticipation for the day that they'd open their doors. They finally did. This place is about 1 minute away from my house by car. I cannot believe how great it feels to have a little taste of Venezuela right down the street! It's about time! I used to have to drive at least 20 minutes to get anywhere that sold decent cachapas, and now they're almost a little to close for comfort- for my waistline anyway. It's been open for just a couple of weeks now, and when I visited today for lunch every table was occupied- I suppose there's a great demand for a little home cooking around these parts...and boy am I thankful! We ordered the Pabellon Criollo and a Cachapa. The Pabellon came out right away- 7 bucks for delicious meat, rice, beans, plantains, and a soup to start. Great deal! Seasoning was amazing...The rice reminded me of the rice they served at the daycare I used to go to when I lived in Venezuela. The taste took me back more than my memory could alone. So awesome. The cachapa was also amazing, even better than my usual go-to spots to satisfy that particular craving (and it's right by my house! I mentioned this already but it makes me so happy I'll say it again!). The only drawback (and thus the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5) is that the cachapa took so long to make it came out after the other dish we ordered was long gone and in our bellies- probably about 20-25 minutes. Kind of ridiculous to wait that long for what it is, and maybe they're just not ready for the amount of people that were in there today. I don't know. The food is really great especially there lunch menu. Everything is house made and it is family owned. There will be days you can sit right next to owner and have lunch with him and he will treat you like family. They have really great Venezuelan juices and for dessert try their marquesas I believe that's the name of it. Basically a sponge dulce de Leche cake topped with almonds and candies caramel. For lunch they always have fresh and house made meal which includes a salad or soup. They are a little over priced on certain things but for lunch I wouldn't mind paying $15-18 on a good house made meal. read more

This place is legit for Venezuelan arepas. I cam here with my mom after one of her friends put her on to this place. We both shared an empanada pabellon: fresh and great texture, plenty of flavor. Then of course, to the arepas, an arepa con carne mechada for her and an arepa Guayanes--they were both great. The flavors stood out that much more with some of their maybe-homemade hot sauce. Lastly, we shared a Peky lyche soda which I'd never had before-- it tastes just like lychee. Aside from the great food they have a cantina service where you can get bulk orders of empandas and such. There are also plenty of flyers and newspapers with Venezuelan orientated news and services. This kind of place makes me wish for something similar for my mom's home country's cuisine. The restaurant is very casual and is a great place to have a quick lunch if in the area. I think its a family owned place since I saw quite a few people behind the counter and they had that way of talking to each other that seemed so very familiar. Customer service was horrible! My husband and I were really looking forward to having Venezuelan arepas and we're very disappointed with the service, so much so that we even cancelled our order. When we arrived we were attended by the one waitress that they had working at the place. She was nice and attentive, however being the only waitress working, the tables were dirty and she was waiting on 5 tables, we patiently waited for our turn since she was swamped. Finally when she took out order we ordered two arepas. I noticed that our food was taking rather long, so we ordered a taquño and an arepa at the counter. The arepa was super oily, so much so that the napkin that I was holding it with was full of oil. I noticed that the waitress kept on going to the counter to request 2, 3 times orders that were not out yet, she even ordered two coffees several times for a table and got them 10 minutes later. Several customers were upset, since the food was not coming out on time to complete the table's order. There was a lady that was staring at her husband's food for a while. When I noticed this, I asked nicely if my order was not done, to please cancel my order. The lady behind the counter said that the arepas are made fresh and take 8-10 minutes, I told her that we have been waiting 35 minutes, to please cancel my order (mind you, my arepas were not even out yet from the kitchen). She pretended not to hear me. I approached the counter and asked to cancel my order again, she was so rude!!! She asked me if I've ever been there before, I said yes, but that 35 minutes for an arepa is too long, she then rolled her eyes at me and charged me.
