I was here a very long time ago since a friend who is from Los Angeles loves this place, and assured us out-of-towners that this was some of the best Mexican food in town. Well I haven't returned since then, but I remember it being rather busy with what seemed to be a lot of regulars. Checking out the menu now, of course everything costs more than what it did but I recall the portion sizes were fairly decent, unless they've changed since. I've been in town so long that I've found other favorites that I tend to stick with. Was in the area and decided to try them out again. Sunday around 1:45p, there were booths full but it wasn't quite busy, yet they seemed under/short staffed. It took me a while to get someone to help since no host/hostess was at the counter, and staff just walked by delivering food so I figured the bar had to have someone. A lady came in after me, saying her party was sitting on the patio area, yet no one came out to help them after about five minutes. Finally placed order, and the à la carte grilled chicken soft taco ($9) has 'open food' +$1 after it on my receipt. I inquired and was told this (grilled chicken) was extra. Well this needs to be on the menu to let customers know (I KNOW it's only $1 but it should be stated on the menu, not as a 'surprise' on the receipt). Food didn't take too long to be ready, and I checked before leaving out of habit. The good: chips, and the side of rice. Not a large portion for $4, but it was decent. Chips however were generous, as were the two salsas accompanying them. Ground beef crispy taco ($7) was also good, but that soft grilled chicken taco was a disappointment regardless of how much it was. On the menu, it said it has guacamole, cilantro, and onions. None of the above was on mine, just lettuce and melted cheese-a lot of it-where I didn't even finish. Due to this and the upcharge, I probably should have just gone with the crispy potato taco instead. It certainly wasn't the worst Mexican food I've had (Cactus still has that title) but it is far from the best and due to everything, I'm not sure if I would return. So came here for dinner tonight. Ordered a combo enchilada and tamale plate that came with rice and beans. Wife and mother ordered the Tostada. I can cook very well so I hold restaurants to a pretty high standard. Add in that before I retired, I would deliver a very high level of service to customers so I expect the same when I am dealing with a business. So, let's get into it. First, when I eat I also get thirsty and need to have my water and I expect the server to pay attention and periodically refill my glass during the meal. The glasses this establishment uses are very small and I asked our server if they had any larger glasses to which he told me NO. The problem was that after serving our food he went into hibernation never to be seen again so I had to ask the bus boy who was cleaning tables to refill my glass and I also requested a glass with ice so I could add to my water. When he brought the ice, very promptly btw, low and behold it was a larger glass. Amazing how they magically had larger glasses when I was told they didn't. Did I mention that our server never came by intermittently to check on us or to refill our drinks? The food was ok, nothing stand out and I've eaten at plently of Mexican restaurants. When we finished out meal, I thought maybe our server would come by to see if we needed a take home box and if we were ready for the check but we sat there for like 15 minutes and finally had to ask the bus boy for the take home boxes which he promptly brought. Still no sign of our server who also seemed to have an attitude. He finally brought our check and I paid the bill. His tip reflected the level of service we received. He's lucky I even gave him that much because I was tempted to leave nothing but thought maybe the low amount I tipped would send a better message. Sorry but this was just a terrible experience and I just couldn't wait to get out of there because if I had stayed longer I would have said something to him that would not have been pleasant for either of us. Not the pickiest with Mexican food but I had a great meal here. The caldo de res was flavorful and so satiating, short rib so tender. Chimiflautas - haven't had this dish before but personally not for me, I think would try the taquitos next time for more crunch. Steak picado - tender and fatty ribeye with a deep chile sauce, honestly even just the sauce alone with the rice is delicious. I thought the beans and rice were of plenty portion. My family has been coming here for over 20 years because the food has always been delicious and the service has consistently been excellent. That's why this experience was so disappointing. Today, I placed a large to-go order for my family, and while eating, I found a long strand of hair mixed in with the carrots. It completely ruined the meal and raised serious concerns about the restaurant's food preparation and cleanliness. After being loyal customers for more than two decades, I never expected something like this to happen. They anticipated our needs before we knew we had them. Bravo. Now, the food: Usually the chicken in dishes is so dry that I rarely get it. One I our party got a chicken enchilada and I had no idea a restaurant could nail good chicken anymore. So tasty. The verde sauce was delicious. We were told this was the place to get chile rellenos. I been coming to Don Antonio's for years and honestly, their food has remained consistent for over 2 decades. Their food is very delicious! Their tacos, tamale, burritos and their sizzling fajitas are some of my favorites to order. I do wish they would add rice in their burritos but I totally understand if they don't want to make it a permanent ingredient in their burrito dishes. I love their margaritas and their micheladas. They do tend to make them strong so be able to have a DD with you in case you're ordering more than one. The service is great. They're friendly and very good at explaining and suggesting dishes off the menu. I love the old dimly lit Spanish restaurant setting. Cherry wood furniture with Spanish accent walls and lighting. It truly makes you feel like you're dining somewhere in Mexico. I am a regular and will be coming back here soon. read more

I have been going there for more years and I can remember. Used to go with my mom and dad 40 years ago. Hadn't been there in a very long time and had plans with my daughter to meet there. She canceled at the last moment, and I said what the heck I'll go there and sit at the bar. I ordered the Carne Asada and it was so good. It's like I never had it before. My go-to Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood! Everytime I come here the food is excellent and satisfies all of my cravings. With a wide variety on the menu, this place is for everyone. I always get the combination plate with a cheese enchilada and a hard shell beef taco (comes with rice and beans). The cheese quesadilla is also to die for! This place can get busy so expect a wait if you are a bigger party or coming at a peak time. During my last experience here, the hostess sat other parties before us and left us outside in the cold which was disappointing. Our server was not welcoming at all and took our menus before we were even done ordering, seemed like he could care less about our table. There is a very small parking lot in the back but I usually street park on Pico. Free chips and salsa when you dine in! Menu, pricing, and freshness is all perfect, service could be improved. If you're looking for good Mexican food, this is the place to go on the west side. I have been coming here for years and I am never disappointed. The tacos are delicious, but the enchiladas are always fabulous. The queso fundido is the best ever and the beans are as good as mine and that is saying a lot! Parking is not so great but the service is excellent. They have a great lunch special Monday through Friday you can't beat it. If you haven't been here, do yourself a favor and try it out. I once heard a statistic that most people go to the same 10 restaurants 95% of the time they go out to eat. If this is true Don Antonio's is one of those places for me. This place is not a taqueria or one of those elevated Mexican restaurants with $30 burritos. It's more comparable to homestyle Mexican food with an allegiance to making food like my grandma makes it...or WOULD make it. I'm Mexican, but honestly my grandma never really crushed it in the kitchen in that way, so maybe it just scratched that itch. I'll also say this. It's difficult to find good Mexican food on this side of the city that's not from a taco truck, so it's nice that this place exists. I have been here dozens of times and have yet to have a bad experience. If you go, I'd recommend showing up on a nice day and grabbing a table on the back door patio area (not the parking lot one.) read more

An old favorite gone bad... we started going to Don Antonio's over 25 years ago, when they had the fish tank in the front. We stopped going when the wait was over an hour long but tonight we stopped by for the first time in a few years. Well, how disappointing. First, the service. We sat down in the booth and I ignored the scattered chips under the table but the bench was covered in salt. The waiter said, "well it's just salt." Should we have to sit in a salty booth? No. The dirty spoon was next but nobody was checking on us, so I used the second spoon on the table. And, finally my enchilada was undercooked (I thought it was full of cheese but when I peeled it apart, it was undercooked dough). Finally, the burrito was dry and when we mentioned it, the waiter said, "Well you ordered the bean and cheese burrito." No apology - just whisked the plate away. The service was rushed and nobody checked on us to refill our salsa or chips (I had to ask). Upon leaving, there was no "thank you, how was everything?" I do miss sitting in the "cave room," but there are much better Mexican restaurants with friendly service, right down the street from DA. read more

Went here sometime ago and I really like their food. It gets crowded here and I would say the only downside is their parking. They don't have valet and if you want to park close, you need to be lucky to find a space on Pico Blvd. in the evening. Anyways, the food... chips and salsa (mild) was yummy. Guacamole was delicious and fresh. I ordered a bean and cheese burrito and it was big so I couldn't finish it. The cheese they use in the burrito I think was that finely shredded cheddar. Interior atmosphere is surprisingly large and inviting with a nice outdoor patio. We were seated right away with no reservations. Chips and salsa came complimentary which is not always the case anymore. They had a non-spicy version of the salsa which is a nice option for kids. I got the diabla fish which I wasn't a fan of. I went for the Don Antonio Special, which is perfect if you're not sure what to get--comes with a little bit of everything. The crispy chicken taco was bomb, and the chile relleno was cooked to perfection. The tortillas were on the thinner side, which I actually loved--gotta cut the carbs somewhere! The dish was delicious, with a cheese enchilada included, and the presentation was authentic and well done. This was my second time here, and the vibe, whether sitting inside or outside, is just perfect. I mentioned to my parents that I would bring them here next time. I also love that they serve coffee, so I'm definitely grabbing another cup before we go. And the flan? To die for! Highly recommend Don Antonio's--this place is a gem! This is my first time at this restaurant. I love the old Mexican ambience. We had our food on the patio it was about 18 of us. Service was a little slow but the servers were very pleasant. I ordered The Carnitas and it was just really horrible, beans rice were good. The only reason I'm giving this Restuarant a three rating is the Cadillac margaritas were excellent. I had the chicken quesadilla for an appetiser and it was excellent. The tortilla was very good. The rest of my Party ordered the fajitas and they were very very good chicken and steak fajitas. On 12/30/2025, a group of eight (8) individuals dined at Don Antonio at approximately 6:00 PM for dinner. Within a few hours after the meal, several members of the group began experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms. At around 2:00 AM, 4:00 AM three (3) individuals developed severe abdominal pain accompanied by repeated vomiting and diarrhea. The remaining members of the group experienced persistent stomachache and unusual watery or loose stools. Symptoms appeared to be acute in onset and occurred within hours of the shared meal. All affected individuals had eaten food from the same establishment during the same time period. No other common exposures were identified prior to symptom onset. read more

The restaurant is like sitting in a cave. They make great margaritas and you can see and smell the trail of smoke when someone orders the fajita plate.
