I ordered take-out via Yelp and was delighted to receive my Poké Bowl Pick 2 and Matcha-Berri Latté neatly and cleanly packaged in a paper bag. The mango and veggies in my poké bowl were incredibly fresh and tasty, in which the fried onion, garlic crisps, and roasted seaweed added a welcoming and balanced, crunchy texture. We were around MacArthur Mall and we refused to eat the poke place from their food court. Since Domoishi is around the area, we decided to give this location a try. I've been to other locations and we wanted to see why people like Domoishi a lot. We ordered medium sized poke bowls. Compared to other poke places I've been to, this restaurant gives the smallest servings. For the first time, I feel like I was still hungry after our meal. Also, I didn't like the idea that we didn't get to see the things they put on our bowls. Like the other Domoishi that I tried, the only good thing about this place was their mango smoothie. The ramen is very decent. The noodle is separated nicely. The charsiew Pork actually Roll and cut. It is follow the traditional way of doing it. The soup base has nicely touched. Each us also get the taro lover and Grass Hopper. The tea is lightly brew but it has a nice smell. The Taro lover has boba and the Grass Hopper is actually mango jelly. Location: This place is located in the shopping strip adjacent to MacArthur Mall on Monticello Ave. There are plenty of ways you can get here and park: - Granby Street has plenty of street parking that is meter operated. Parking is free on Sundays and the first two hours are free on Saturdays. Please be sure to double check this info as it may change!! - MacArthur Mall garage and walk two blocks. I believe parking is $1 every three hours. - The Tide has a station directly in front of the shopping plaza! Drinks: This is set up like most of the tea places popping up in Hampton Roads. Yamachan Ramen and Boba Bola Tea just opened in downtown Norfolk. Right now (4/3) they have buy one get one for their boba! Overall this place is pretty good, and has a lot of potential. For the boba tea you can customize your drinks in terms of flavor, ice level, sugar level, etc. I definitely appreciate that! I had a green peach tea with bubbles and the bubble texture was spot on. My ice melted by the time the drink made it to me, but it was an easy enough fix. Boba is one size at $4.25. The ramen was decent, lots of noodles and toppings. Like the boba, you build your bowl. I had shoyu (they were out of tonkatsu, my go-to) with chashu pork and all the toppings. Only one slice of pork chashu, and it was decent but not fall-apart tender like ramen places usually serve. Alkaline is definitely better, but for the first ramen place downtown where I work, I'll take it!! $10 for a bowl, no upcharge for meats/seafood right now. The interior is cute, with light up palm trees. Staff was nice, definitely still learning, but hey it's their soft opening! So if you're not a big sweets person, best believe that the 75% and 100% sweetness level is probably not for you. I got the ramen with the pork protein, which I feel was a better choice because it added to the flavor since the broth was bland. It lacked some saltiness to it. Super disappointed. I placed an order through Door Dash and almost everything had something wrong. The poke bowl was not closed securely and leaked all over the bag, they did not include a boba straw for my drink, and I ordered original soy garlic chicken and got spicy. When I called the location to see about going to pick up the correct chicken I was told there was no one in the kitchen and there would not be for an hour. This is a new Ramen spot that opened up just a few weeks ago on Monticello Avenue, nestled tightly between Sushi King and a 7-11, and one that also happens to serve Bubble (Boba) Tea and other drinks. I first noticed the Yamachan sign on their front door last November, along with their "Opening Soon" sign. The Yamachan name sounded familiar to me, causing me to suspect a chain operation. I ran a Google search and found their corporate website with the same company logo I saw on their door. http://yamachanramen.com/ They are based in San Jose, California, and are affiliated with Nippon Trends Food Service, Inc. They sell commercial Ramen products to Asian markets and restaurants all across the United States. I also found their corporate Facebook page and asked them when their new Norfolk restaurant was expected to open. Their reply was as follows: "Unfortunately, it is not our restaurant, but they will be using Yamachan products. Please stop by and enjoy Yamachan Ramen." I also found the Boba-Bola Tea website, where they list the same products as those shown on their Norfolk menu. A toll free phone number is listed for franchising opportunities, but with no information as to where they are located: http://boba-bola.com/ This restaurant appears to be marriage of sorts between these two corporate entities. The decor is attractive and colorful, highlighted by the sparkles of a flashing red palm tree. I counted a total of 6 tables and 24 seats in the dining area, as well as a couple of soft easy chairs in the back near the restrooms for a cozy feel. As the menu will show (See photo), they utilize a "Build Your Own" Ramen concept. You first choose your Soup Base, which can be ordered either Mild or Spicy, and then your Protein. Standard toppings are listed for all of their Ramen dishes with the option to eliminate any of them. So far I have tried the following with all of their standard toppings included: SPICY CHICKEN SHOYU WITH CHICKEN CHASU: The broth was bland and not as spicy as desired. Some of the toppings were sloppily presented, including the seaweed, which was floating on top of the broth. Some of the chicken was a bit tough. On the positive side, the noodles were pleasantly spongy and springy with a full bodied texture. My Rating: 2.5 Stars. SPICY TONKOTSU SHOYU WITH PORK CHASU: The broth for this one had more depth and flavor, although the pork bone broth was not as creamy as I like. One of the pork slices contained a bit too much fat. The seaweed topping was nowhere to be found. This time I spiced it up a little from a shaker of Nanami Togarashi, a powdered chili pepper, until my hot tooth smiled. Once again, the noodles were pleasantly spongy and springy with a nice texture. My Rating: 3.5 Stars. I also tried one of their Boba Teas from their list of Specialty Drinks. You can choose your own sweetness level at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%. TARO LOVER: Sweet Taro with Premium Cream and Pearl Boba. I love the taste of taro, so this one was my choice, along with the 100% sweetness level, fully iced. It was pleasant and refreshing. The tapioca pearls were large and exhibited a nice soft yet chewy texture. I only wish the taro mix was a bit stronger. My Rating: 4 Stars. In addition to their Boba Teas, they also offer Smoothies, Slushies, and Milk Shakes. You can also create your own drink with either a Black Tea or a Green Tea Base. Service has been friendly so far, with a little inexperience shown by my counter person during my first visit. She asked me to pay my tip right after ordering at the counter, even before receiving my food. She wasn't there during my second visit, and they are still hiring and training their staff members. At this time, the Ramen I have tasted here so far comes in fourth place out of the five Ramen spots I have tried in Norfolk. The two Ramen spots in Ghent, as well as the one off Military Highway (See my last review), come out way ahead. The Ramen I tried in Waterside last year comes in dead last. Overall, I find their Ramen to be passable so far with much room for improvement, which I believe will be made over time with more experience. Had dinner here on their soft opening. Was pretty excited for ramen since the Asian food scene in Miami is rather lackluster or way overpriced. Ordering the ramen: start by picking a base (4 options) and spice level (mild or spicy), choose a type of meat (pork, chicken, shrimp & crabmeat) and select any/all of the 9 toppings. I must add that the egg was hard boiled, not the soft egg I'm accustomed to. There was only 1 piece of meat. The spoon head was really round, great for holding lots of noodles/broth, but was a little to large to fit in my mouth. The drinks: we tried the Taro Lover and House milk tea. You have the option of picking the sweetness level, which is something I've never encountered when ordering boba. We ordered 50% sweetness level for both drinks and the Taro was a little too sweet whereas the milk tea was not very sweet at all. It was really confusing for us which level to pick. It would be nice to know what the restaurant considers "regular" and give the patron the option of making the drink sweeter or less sweet rather than an arbitrary % since I don't know what "normal sweetness" is. The boba balls were pretty good, nice and soft. The ramen and drinks were good, and the prices are very reasonable. After working out some kinks (which is expected with this being a new restaurant), I see lots of potential for the place. I will definitely return when in the area. read more

Got the ramen to-go on my first trip here. It was ok.. the noodles were undercooked and the soup lacked in flavor. This was in April, however. Around the time that they had just opened. Months later, I come here at least twice a month since May. A couple friends of mine work here and their customer service is awesome (especially when serving other customers). Recently, I had ordered 2 orders of the Takoyaki appetizer from UBEREats from work and they tried calling me to let me know that they could only make 1 batch (I guess I ordered the last some) and they offered to replace the second batch with Fried Squid. All the fancy drinks looked great. They offer smoothies and also jellies and boba filled with different Flavours. You can do either a poke bowl or ramen. Each one has different steps and options to build as your own which is a wonderful method to make the meal yours. The ramen has 5 choices for a base. I chose pork and then 5 choices for protein. I again chose pork which was a great choice. The pork is tender and so fresh, perfectly prepared. The ramen comes with egg, corn, fish cakes, sprouts, and edamame. The broth is delicious. The reason I gave 4 stars is the noodles are not quite as good as hey should be...starchy and have a boxed quality to them. Overall, great place. The calamari and spicy soy garlic wings was soo good and so was my coconut bubble tea and the sushi was good and very fulfilling and not to pricey. I got 40 pieces of sushi for $19.99. We were planning on going to Tanpopo Ramen but it was too far away from us. So we decided to go to somewhere closer. It was absolutely worth it! Lets start with the gyoza it was fresh and juicy and amazing! (Sadly I did not take a picture as we were hungry) They actually forgot so we had to remind them but they came out with it ASAP. The ramen was great and the broth was rich. (I got the shoyu based) I got the chatsu pork and it was INCREDIBLE its so easy on chewing and they did not remove the fat making it very flavorful. Cold weather means ramen--so I decided to try Yamachan. The menu is divided into three sections: Boba tea, Ramen, and poke bowls. I decided upon Ramen and Boba tea. Specifically, a shoyu broth with tofu and a milk tea boba. The Ramen broth was bland. It tasted OK but did not have the depth of flavor that I expect in Ramen. It had lots of noodles and a moderate amount of assorted veggies. There was no egg half on the bowl. The fish cakes were almost transparently thin. The boba tea was good. My total bill for a bowl plus tea was almost $13. I thought that was a bit expensive. (And this was with the special of "get a free Boba tea if you order a Ramen". If I had to pay for the tea, it would have been $5 more!) So, my overall assessment of Yamachan is that it is so-so Ramen with a good Boba tea at a downtown/expensive price. This is the second bad review I'll be giving in the 5 years I've been yelping. Simply put, if you're a ramen lover, you'll be disappointed eating here. The name on the building is Yamachan Ramen and Bolba Tea. The noodles tasted and looked like it came out of a maruchan bag. The were crinkly, thick, and yellow. And overall it had no flavor. I had the shrimp and crab with a chicken soup base. Totally lacking in taste except for the poached egg that was salty biting into it. And the fact that it was served on a tray made even less room on the already close quarters at the tables. I've been eating ramen since 2011, and today is the day that I had to write a bad review about it. I'll never come back, even if it's just for the gyoza (which was fine). I came here after feeling like I needed something to pick me up after visting the mall. I saw that this place was finally open and decided to give it a try. I love boba tea whether it's fresh or from powder. But this place let me down. For starters, the guy behind the counter gave me some stank attitude because it wasn't clear from the get go what the difference was between the pearls, boba, and the jelly. The pearls are the traditional boba if that's what you want, not the "boba" which are the bubbles that burst in your mouth. After his roundabout way of not explaining anything, I just went with the lychee tea and the jelly. Service aside, the drink wasn't great. The jelly pieces were different but I still ate them. The flavor of the tea wasn't what it should have been. I don't know that I'd call it lychee but my fiance noted it tasted like pickle juice. Disgrunted but hot from the summer heat, I drank it anyway but the pickle juice and the service left a bad taste in my mouth. I had went to Yamachan since I was craving ramen and had also wanted to go to the mall. It was a two in one idea for me. I had gotten the Tonkatsu ramen as well as the Shoyu Miso ramen base both in chasu pork. As for the drink, I had their mango specialty tea. The ramen broth was simple, the chasu pork didn't have much flavor, and some the toppings I had ask to not include were still included as well as vice versa where topping I wanted were not included. The mango specialty drink was more on the green tea side rather than the mango. It stated there was fresh mangos along with mango star jellies, but I didn't get any fresh mangos. Other than the food, I did like the decor for the most part. The one thing about the decor was the fake neon palm trees. I felt that made the store feel a bit tacky.
