The Hudson Bar - Mirror, mirror on the wall what's the best bar of them all?

Recently I've heard a lot about The Hudson's famous Chicken Wings so I thought I better check them…read moreout. Firstly I thought that on a Friday afternoon that the place would be rammed and I'd have to wait an age to get ripped in to those tiny, tender poultry pieces but I was wrong I walked in ordered at the bar and less than 15 minutes later I was presented with a wooden bowl of 33 glazed buffalo wings - all for £8.95! The price was good and the wings did live up to the hype but I wouldn't say they were earth shattering. There was just the right amount of glaze but the wings themselves lacked meat. Yesterday's visit to The Hudson reaffirmed how good the bar is in my eyes - it's such a jack of all trades - serves a whole host of different beers - I had the Sam Adams, something that you don't see too often in Belfast. It really is the perfect place to garb some wings and have a beer on a Friday afternoon.

I had a club sandwich which was served with skinny fries & a nice little bit of salad, really enjoyed it all. My husband had the steak sandwich with chunky chips which got a thumbs up from him. Will definitely be back I'm back! Having food before my birthday party which is happening upstairs, tonight I went for scampi & chips....yum! Menu is limited but what they do, they do well. Table had a mix of chunky chips, skinny fries & sweet potato fries all of which are delicious

You'd think by now I'd be steering clear of KFC but I was dragged here by the other half whilst…read morewaiting to go to the cinema for another dose of Minions. To be fair, I won't slag off the Minions as they would probably make a better job of running a KFC than this lot. Luckily we entered the shop just before a large crowd but we were confronted by one of the staff happily munching away on food whilst behind the counter, clearly they were short staffed as the seating area was filthy with leftover food providing a buffet for bluebottles. I really should have walked at this point but we were starving so we ordered a couple of meals. Unfortunately they didn't have any coleslaw for my side but the bloke behind the counter couldn't grasp that I would forgo the side and runs off to consult someone as to what to do. Apparently I could have extra fries but I couldn't make him believe I didn't want the bloody things. In the end I ended up with an unwanted gravy. What is really disappointing, is that they mucked the order up. My OH doesn't eat spicy food but they gave her a zinger burger when she asked for plain. They only changed it when she waved a receipt in their faces, but the general attitude seemed to be "tough titty" if they screwed up. The food was bloody awful even by KFC standards, the gravy was just like cement, seemingly made at 5pm but good to 11. By 11 I assume it would have set like stone. As I said earlier, a crowd descended behind us, they were only getting food as we were leaving, and as we left I heard a voice over the drive through PA announce that there would be no chicken for 20 minutes. Needless to say, the car immediately left. So in short, you have a dirty shop without basic ingredients and without the ability to send out basic orders. Thanks but no thanks.

For some reason, I was persuaded to give this place another go, Christ knows why after the last time but give it a go I did. Firstly, any place with 2 people dining and 2 people queuing should not take 20 minutes to serve you, this is because there appeared to be one bloke doing both kitchen and drive through and another bloke on the counter who appeared to be on some sort of tranquillizer, certainly he was in no hurry and what speed he had was taken up by the 2 people dining coming back to complain about missing items on their order, the lady in front of me ordered a latte, sat down, took one sip and came back complaining it was cold. Mr Slow told her it was because it was the machine wouldn't heat the milk and any other one he made would be the same. She walked out in disgust, By this stage I wasn't prepared to sit in so I asked could I have my order in takeaway form. You would have think I told him his mum was a good shag going by the look and the theatrical fluffing of the paper bags, I nearly laughed out loud. Anyway, I took the food and went home. In the literally 5 minutes it took to get home, the "fries" were stone cold, straight to the bin, the missus was hungry enough to eat her burger lukewarm, but the chicken was returned to the oven to get good and hot. Anyway, I'd avoid it even more now, maybe people don't expect much, but you could make a load of fried chicken from Iceland for half the price and at least you'd know it was warm

This turned out surprisingly well, but when I first looked at the pizza menu I wasn't impressed…read more I was expecting to have a pizza topped with anchovies, black olives, capers and prawns, but no, not as much as a sniff of any one these super pizza ingredients. The pizza and pasta menu is mostly chicken orientated with some beef, some pork and some vegetarian. We opted for a chicken based 18" between two with a Diet Coke and a sparkling water. The sparkling water was a generous portion. The Coke was 330ml which is fine as I'm now refusing to accept 200ml bottles because I'm really sick of Coca Cola just ripping people off: they claim 'rising costs' for gassy artificially sweetened filtered water so how come I can now buy champagne cheaper ml by ml. So our pizza was rectangular, impressively huge and cooked in intense wood fire heat. This produced a thin, delicious pizza base. The chicken was simply that, fresh chicken breast with tomato sauce, fresh tomatoes, red cabbage and, surprisingly, lettuce, not your usual pizza ingredient but welcome nonetheless. The mozzarella cheese seems real and not that rubbish made in a laboratory without any real cheese in it. The pizza was liberally dosed with garlic mayonnaise and a chilli mayonnaise sauce. The mayonnaise is factory produced and vegetable oil based. The chilli and garlic mayos were also on each table if more is needed. So all in all it was better than I thought, with pretty good service and friendly young staff. It's 3.5 stars and fish and olives would make it 5 star.
