This review is for the pizza shack at the side of the main restaurant. It also sells other stuff like chicken wings, dirty fries, pork sausage rolls, including a black pudding variety, coffees and sweet pies and tarts.
We didn't know this place was open for takeaway - we were out for a walk and passed by. So we got an outside table tucked away from the main road and got a sausage roll and an iced lemon pie to share over cappuccinos and we also ordered a 12 inch chicken tikka pizza to go.
The bill was just under £21. The coffee was alright, and the sausage roll was ok tasting - but the meat was seriously under-seasoned and not hot enough. The pastry too should have been much more buttery/flaky so just about 3 star here.
The iced lemon pie was superb, and really tasty. The chicken tikka pizza was also really top class even though we took it home and re warmed it. I was disappointed that the pizza options did not include any fish choices but that's not the fault of the restaurant; they can only follow customer demands.
The service was friendly but one thing bugged me - we were offered brown sauce for the sausage roll. It was in a plastic pouch and was the cheaper, rubbish stuff.
The ingredients of the 'sauce' showed it was water/sugar based, containing sulphites, as well as nasty chemicals ammonia caramel and potassium sorbate that tomato/vinegar based HP sauce does not.
These chemicals are there to cheapen and deceive. They simulate the appearance of the natural colouring you'd see if you were using natural ingredients - using natural ingredients costs a bit more - and these chemicals also stabilise the foodstuff.
I'm at a loss to understand how serious foodies can countenance serving this muck.
If you pitch your restaurant at top range prices and as serving first-class good food, as is the case here, and they do, promoting artisan pizzas with dough fermented for 24 hours, and so on, then you should avoid serving up the stuff that greasy spoon places cheerfully offer.
Saving a few quid on cheap rubbish containing chemicals when there clearly are far better alternatives is not the message a foodie place should be sending.
So borderline 4 stars. read more
