I'll be honest with you. When it comes to pizza I'm pretty hard to disappoint. I think I've maybe had 3 truly upsetting pizza experiences in my life. But pizza is my weakness and last night I was feeling very weak. Hubby had just gone back to work after a week off and I had been running around after my hyper active toddler so much that I never made it to do my weekly shop so when he came home we agreed ordering pizza was the sensible, if somewhat cheeky, option.
Or local Dominos does a BOGOF collection deal all the time or if you can't be bothered going to pick it up you get a free pizza with any pizza and side order. We opted for this, seeing as storm Hector was in full swing.
Delivery is always within half an hour at the very most. Last night it was around the 20 minute mark. We opted for twisted cheese dough balls as our side, I ordered a Double Decadence Sizzler (sundried tomato and garlic sauce, pepperoni, chicken, herbs, red onion and jalepenos on two thin and crispy bases with a cheese sauce in the middle) and hubby got a thin and crispy Ranch BBQ (BBQ sauce, chicken, red onion, pepperoni, ground beef).
We don't differ all that much on toppings and we never manage to finish a full pizza but I can't do a BBQ sauce on my pizza so we always order two and leftovers are taken into hubby's work.
My main problem with Domino's is the inconsistency, which I know can't really be helped with a hand made product so I'm quite forgiving of it. However sometimes my double decadence comes spilling with cheese sauce and sometimes it's pretty dry. Last night it was the latter which was disappointing. Being stingy with the cheese sauce is not cool! The pizza itself is my favourite on the menu. There's a subtle heat to it and bags of flavour from the herbs. The sauce is more smooth and less tangy than the original sauce and works well with the heat of the toppings, keeping it on the right side of rich. There's not too much meat either; it's a nice balance. Last night's offering was drowned in jalapeños so I was a happy bunny.
Hubby's pizza looked a little heavy on the sauce and light on the cheese but he seemed satisfied enough. Their BBQ sauce is sweet rather than smokey and he has a very sweet tooth that is satisfied by this combination. Our twisted dough balls were a bit too garlicky and they normally come in a nice 2x3 formation, but last night they looked like they'd exploded. All the cheese was on the outside and all that was left were quite greasy garlic balls.
So that's 1 mark off for my lack of cheese sauce in my double decadence and 1 off for the cheeseless cheesy dough balls. My pizza craving was still satisfied but it was definitely not the best Domino's I've ever had. Next time I think I'll go back to my safe bet of normal or stuff crust base. read more
