To get here, park at C. David Molina Park Address: 4951 Oregon Ave LB, CA 90805 There is a park/playground & a soccer field when you can park your car before heading to the trail. This is a nice little hidden gem in long Beach. Came here to walk my dog with my daughter. This walking trail is a two-mile loop trail that is shared by walkers/runners & even horses. Always watch your steps, you might see poop on the side of the pathway. There are homeless people living here so always watch your surroundings. This place is scenic & calming. There are also animals that you will come across such as bunnies, ducks, turtles, blue heron, & lizards.

I'm glad I went but it was difficult to find the entrance. I wish I had read these other reviews first. As they say, enter from C. David Molina Park on Del Amo. The other entrance is an unmarked gate off of Del Mar. Also FYI - the loop is broken at one point but you can easily hop on the LA River and re-enter the loop at the next ramp. I was on a bike so a little longer, uninterrupted loop trail would have been nice. It was a nice change of pace with some paved/some packed dirt trails. In contrast to other local rides that are either beach (which is great), or river beds.

    Beautiful view of the wetlands

This is my favorite local walking trail that my dog also loves! Its a two mile loop trail that is shared by walkers, runners and also horses. There is beautiful foliage to enjoy, along with bunnies, turtles, ducks, blue heron, and lizards. Its both a lovely and peaceful trail. A new park opened near the north entrance of the trail on the corner of Del Amo and Oregon Ave..... and you can park your car in the parking lot there and enter the trail at the rear of the park. Warning: I've saw a rattlesnake yesterday (7/2) while waking and another walker mentioned to me last week that she encountered a snake also. Additionally, last year I spotted a coyote. Bunnies will very frequently run across the trail, so for most dogs its their instinct to want to chase, so please keep your dog leashed for their safety, so that they don't run into the bush and encounter a snake.

This is a beautiful trail for a flat jog or bike ride, but I would be careful if you're a woman walking here alone. I just walked here for the first time, and a man passed me on his bike, looped back, and started screaming at me while I was on the trail alone. Again, this isn't the fault of the trail itself. But it is not a highly trafficked area, and there are no ways to get off the path once you're on it. I ended up turning around and booking it back to my car in case he decided to loop around again and do something worse. It's a shame, because otherwise it was a very peaceful and picturesque place.

Some days, I feel adventurous and decide to explore new areas. This place isn't necessarily for hiking, more like biking, dog-walking, or just taking a nice walk. They have a nice park/playground and soccer field where you can park your car or just park in the neighborhood. My boyfriend and I went on the little walk and completed it in probably 20 minutes. However, I'd say a WARNING: There are homeless people living/camping in the bushes by the water. As a precaution, I would bring pepper spray or something for defense because some areas are secluded and vacant. It's a nice little area to explore but don't expect to go on a "hike".

nice little hidden trail/hike in long Beach. not as fun as the wetlands in El Dorado in long beach, but its a nice exercise. the beat part of this wetland is that you can actually see the los angeles river and you can go down to the bottom if you like..

    The Project
    Robin Z.

This wetlands project is the first of its kind in the Los Angeles County region. It's been designed to maintain the integrity of flood protection along the urban lower reaches of the river while introducing new water quality elements, groundwater recharge, restoration of native habitat, pedestrian and equestrian trails, environmental education, and river bike trail enhancements. Upon entry, you might hear the high-pitched whine of the elevated and mostly-unseen Metrolink speeding north and south or the screech of a red-tailed hawk. You might detect the unmistakable odor of oil or the pleasing scent of eucalyptus...it depends on what you're attuned to. We walked our dogs along the well maintained trail for about an hour spotting dozens of species of bird and plant life and in that hour, only saw a half dozen other human beings. It was so clear, you could look up from the ponds to the mountains and, with some imagination, picture life before the concrete, power lines and noise of the Metro Link. This hour is well spent (and the dogs love it). We saw several Black-Crowned Night Herons (http://images.google.com/images?q=Black-crowned+Night+Heron&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=n3NkS-KaLoSosgO2_dHECg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBAQsAQwAA) 2-7-10, cormorant & 2 ospreys, no humans Many more photos and words can be found at...http://longbeachnaturalareas.blogspot.com/2008/05/dominguez-gap-wetlands.html So take a hike, grab your bike, walk your dog or rent a horse, of course, and enjoy the natural side of life...your job and text messages will always wait. Bring binoculars and doggie bags. Oh, and if you live upriver, please, please, dispose of your trash properly. Don't let it flow to the sea for all to see (see pic). Keep the area cleaner than when you found it. Thanks.

The Nature Centre comprises of 105 acres in the East Regional portion, and has 2 miles of dirt trails and 1/4 mile paved trail with an indoor visitor center (located on an island near the entrance). My wife, her mom, and I visited on a beautiful Thursday afternoon and we really enjoyed it. The land prior to 1964 was used as flat farmland. In the late 60's, major excavation was done, creating two small ponds connected by a stream, all fed by a groundwater well. It now is the home to varied wildlife, with the most visible being turtles. They love to sun themselves on wooden floating platforms, and the water is clear enough to see them swimming underwater near the walking path bridges. There are three walking trails: 1. quarter mile paved loop, good for strollers 2. 1 mile dirt loop 3. a longer 2 mile loop, sharing some parts of the previous. Everything is well maintained. Three things I appreciated: not too many ducks and geese around, thus no visible droppings along the path; plenty of varied bench seating to rest or observe during the walk; lack of biting insects. The center is open 6 days a week (closed on Mondays). Admission to the center is free, but parking is $6 - $8 per vehicle, payable at entry (credit cards only, no cash accepted). One can buy an annual parking pass (good at both El Dorado East and West parking areas). To incentivize myself to come here more often, decided to buy one for $43 (senior discount), minus the $7 already paid for the one time fee.

It's a great little road/trail--peaceful, scenic, and perfect for getting in a longer walk. There were a few other people out when we went, which was nice. I did notice some dogs off-leash (which I personally don't mind), but with coyotes in the area, I kept my small pups leashed just to be safe. A couple things to note: when I went around 4pm, there were quite a few mosquitoes--probably because it had rained recently and there was some standing water along the road/trail side. Also, parking was a bit confusing since there aren't marked stalls. I wasn't sure if I should park at an angle, perpendicular on the hill, or parallel, so that could definitely be clearer. It did feel a little quiet and slightly eerie when we first arrived since no one else was there, but there are homes along the top of the trail, so you're not completely isolated. Overall, I really enjoyed it and will definitely be back--especially once everything is dried out. Looking forward to more calm, serene walks with my pups!

The refuge is only open once a month for a free, escorted educational tour (last Saturday, except December), and you do need to reserve in advance. Definitely not a casual drop-in, but the effort is well worth it. I went hunting for the threatened Pacific Green Sea Turtle -- and ended up spotting three! We also saw a very healthy coyote making its rounds, and a variety of birds you don't normally see in urban areas. The refuge is also home to endangered species like the California Least Tern and the Light-footed Ridgway's Rail. It's peaceful, educational, and a little unexpected -- a real escape from the city, without even leaving Southern California. Birds you're likely to see: Common / regularly seen: Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Black-necked Stilt, American Avocet, Willet, Western Grebe, Mallard, Gadwall, American Coot, Double-crested Cormorant, Black-crowned Night Heron, Killdeer, Belding's Savannah Sparrow Seasonal / pretty likely: California Least Tern (endangered), Light-footed Ridgway's Rail (endangered), Brown Pelican, Forster's Tern, Caspian Tern, Red-tailed Hawk, Osprey, Marbled Godwit, Long-billed Curlew Uncommon: Northern Harrier, Snowy Plover, Peregrine Falcon, Reddish Egret, Burrowing Owl Rare: Bald Eagle Highly recommend for anyone who loves wildlife, birding, or just escaping the urban grind.
