Some of the biggest trees have been removed in recent years, scooters no longer available and for some odd reason the crew who look after the park will drive their truck across the field leaving tire tracks in the grass despite there being a driveway for them on Freeland behind the rec center. They finally got the water fountain working, but some fool sat on the lower part while watching a soccer match so now it's incredible unstable and takes a hefty push of upper lever to get flow out.
Other than that I really do like this park because of the animals and trees. Variety. It's great to see families use this place for exercise, often times are soccer games happening. I suggest don't park on San Antonio if you drive there because idiots speed too fast on San Antonio, which sucks since it's the street I have to cross to access it and there aren't any marked pedestrian intersections. Btw - late evening beware of coyotes. They seem to prowl in trio, I've had two approach me while carrying groceries homeward, in the distance was a third coyote. I made lots of noise and raised arms up high, then they took off towards ihop/kfc. If I hadn't noticed the third coyote it might have tried to rush me had I ran away from the first pair.
There's a community cleanup on 2nd & 4th Saturday monthly at 8:30am to 9:30am Neighbors meet at San Antonio & Orange for supplies then they pick up rubbish off the curbs around this park and elsewhere. It's called Bixby Knolls/Ridgewood CLEAN STREETS.
The city of Long Beach Parks dept does a good job of cleaning the Bixby Knolls Park a couple times a week, and the lock the bathrooms nightly which has cut down misbehaving so the park has felt safer lately. I've seen a lady who leads TaiChi on weekday mornings and a couple different men who seem to offer personal training opportunities. This is also a great place to walk dogs on leash, please bring baggies to clean up though because the park doesn't offer complimentary bags.
One special aspect about this area of Long Beach is the amount of parks,, cemeteries, airports and golf courses because the night sky has less light pollution. This park is a great place for star gazing, watching spacex rocket launches and couple times I've caught site of Chinese lanterns fly over at dusk. read more
