Scherer Park is a nice neighborhood spot in Long Beach. There's a little lake in the middle surrounded by tons of ducks and geese, which makes it feel peaceful and a little lively at the same time. The park has big shady trees, plenty of grass to hang out on, walking paths, and a playground. There are also courts if you're into tennis or basketball. It's a solid place to relax, walk the dog, or just watch the ducks waddle around. read more

Scherer Park I enjoy going to Scherer Park! I love that there are so many trees for shade and relaxation, as well as open areas to sit and play. The Parks and Rec Dept do a pretty good job of landscaping and keeping the park clean. It's ridiculous how many transformations this park has had over the years. Used to ride my skateboard down the hills from Atlantic over to the tennis courts. Used to go to the back to playground and play on what Some may call merry go round we used to throw all of our shoes down on the ground and get pushed on our stomachs and whoever wound up with the most shoes at the end was the boss. This was one of the original parts that used to have a rocket ship slide. As a child this was my safe space absolutely loved it. As you get older, you would be able to take a fishing spool with anything from cheese to bubblegum and catch small bluegill. If you ever got lucky, you might have caught one of the legendary carps that made it though no one ever caught one. read more

This is a very big and pretty park that I've loved since childhood. The tennis courts are sometimes open to the public when no classes are going on, and there's a pond, though it's quite dirty now. Occasionally some homeless people roam around, but overall, it's still a beautiful park, and I enjoy going there. read more

Yikes...a park with so much potential to be as family friendly as Don Knabe in Cerritos, but as much as I wanted to enjoy catching my breath in this park, I just couldn't. Scherer Park is located between Atlantic and Long Beach Blvd just on the other side of Bixby Knolls Shopping Center. It's a pretty wide park as you can imagine, but I just didn't have it in me to walk even half the length. No, not because it was too far, but rather, the park was just filthy and didn't bring out the good vibes that I would always get at Don Knabe. The parking lot is on the Atlantic Ave side of the park. I suppose you can park on the Long Beach Blvd side, but somehow, I missed the turn into the park from Long Beach Blvd, so I had to park on the Atlantic side. After getting out of my car, I took a look and envisioned what I thought would be a nice leisurely walk around the duck pond and beyond. However, those high hopes soon got dashed once I saw a homeless man sleeping on the grass close to the sidewalk. I could have looked past it, but it was simply a precursor to what I was going to see next. Filth over here, filth over there, and someone was blocking the pathway to feed the ducks, a seemingly innocent act until I saw a sign that told visitors to not feed the ducks. The sign had a pretty thorough explanation of why ducks shouldn't be fed, but she just completely ignored that sign. Perhaps more signs around the pond would be useful? I mean, there is a sign that says "NO SWIMMING" in the pond, and it needs no further explanation given the filth I had been seeing on the walkways. Walking down the hill from the parking lot isn't necessarily safe either. The hill is pretty steep, so be really careful to not trip! Ascending those steep hills was pretty hard on my knees, so every encounter with an uphill battle (literally lol) would always accompany a side of anxiety. Stairs would be better suited here, but there are already stairs on the rocks surrounding the duck pond, and mind you, they're pretty jagged. Words of wisdom: watch your step! The views are kind of nice, especially with the hundreds of ducks you'll see at this park, which explains why I didn't give one star. However, Don Knabe blows Scherer out of the water any time, any day. read more

We lived nearby on Mountain View from about 1967-72 when I was a kid and Scherer Park was a central part of our lives. We loved riding bikes and skateboards down the hill, and I remember some kids intentionally riding their bikes directly into the pond. I think that resulted in some sort of barrier being erected. The park also had a great recreation center with games like caroms that kept us occupied when school was out for summer. I'm sure it's changed in many ways over the past 50+ years, but it was really magical as a young tyke. read more

Had a picnic on one Saturday, picnic table close to the community center and basketball court with parking close by, easy to unload things we had out of the car. It was a quite day. We didn't get the chance to walk around to explore to the other side of the park. Will plan to go back again. read more

This review is specifically for the four (4) lighted tennis courts and the parking that's available - this is my favourite of all the Long Beach parks to go to and I've been back quite a few times. I've only visited the park after 5 p.m. during the workweek and after 3 p.m. on the weekends, so it can be busy, especially during the latter time. I definitely recommend going here if you want to play tennis - these are free to play on and you cannot reserve, like you can the El Dorado or Billie Jean King tennis courts. The parking situation is pretty expansive, so you could end up driving around until you find a spot you like. Pro-tip: To park by the tennis courts (and see how busy they are before getting out of the car), go to the Del Amo Boulevard parking spots. The courts are maintained by the Long Beach Parks, Recreations, and Marine department - here's a list of all their parks with whether they cost anything & how much, as well as whether they're lighted or not: longbeach.gov/park/recre.... It took me a couple tries to find this park, but once I did I was so thrilled. Lots of grass and cute benches and sitting areas. Nice tennis courts and a playground. I like to park off Del Amo right at the corner of Del Amo and South. I think when I followed the map directions it took me into the neighborhood right near the playground, which is not the nicest part, IMO. The duck pond and trees and rocks lining the pond are really nice. We even spotted some turtles! For the little guy, seeing the train go by from the parking lot was a highlight, too. It is a city park, though, so watch for broken glass and other garbage. read more

This park used to be cleaner about 15 years ago when I used to come walk but now it looks super run down. Graffiti everywhere, the inevitable homeless people sleeping by the playground, trash and last but not least, the condition of the pond is abysmal. The water is incredibly contaminated with trash, feces and looks brown almost black in color. Terrible living conditions for the animals that reside there. The city needs to seriously upkeep this park. read more

Went to check out the playground with my 1 year old. The playground is old, dirty, and the bottom of the slide was broken and un-usable. They have a few spheres of different sizes and colors, but the paint was coming off. Then there's the duck pond, with ducks and geese. The grass all around that area is super dirty and filled with poop. Unfortunately, it's not a great park to bring your kid to play. read more

I keep reviewing this park, and Yelp keeps removing my review! I have been here on multiple occasions. Most recently, I came here to drop off our Christmas tree for their tree drop off/recycling program after Christmas. There is plenty of parking and the park is a good size. I am not a fan of the location (on the corner of Del Amo & Atlantic Ave.) as there is a ton of traffic on these streets. There are usually many homeless people here, and I do not feel safe, so I do not frequent the park. read more

I love this park. It's such a serene place to relax and meditate or hang out to get fresh air. It's a large park that spans between two main streets. I enjoy walking around the duck pond. Water is kind of nasty and surrounded by trash and poop, but the ducks are cute and people friendly. There's benches and small bridges/rocks that are gorgeous for pictures. There's also tennis and basketball courts, enclosed large and small dog play areas, and picnic tables. Grass is lush and green in most areas as well. This is a safe, community park that also shares a police substation and is across the street from a YMCA. read more

Back in the day young people ruled this park I had so much fun with my friends it was amazing while it lasted... Scherer park was always lovely and a great place to visit but it wasn't regulated in the 80's in those days someone at school would spread the word about a picnic at the park and a huge get together with food and friends was planned for the weekend. We would have a great time playing our radios old school music blaring and of course we invited break dancers who got our party started right with those dance moves. Lol The park was crowded with kids having a ball the adults who were around looked irritated desperately wanting us to leave we had so much fun never once did we consider the other visitors feelings we had our fun but we were clueless without much common sense. It's interesting that after all these years I'm the annoyed adult in the park when I see these wild kids while I'm trying to relax it must be payback. The fun times were over quickly when the police moved in on our territory they actually built a police station onto the park grounds the party was definitely over no kid wants to party with the police around. Lol They remodeled the park fixed up the tennis courts and cleaned up the fountains and the grass is always trim and neat. Over the years I've visited with my daughter at this lovely park enjoying quiet picnics at the picnic tables making new memories. BTW The park is very dog friendly and I love seeing all of the cute dogs so many breeds and most well behaved and it's safe obviously with all of the police around. The people are usually laid back you'll see runners in the morning lately dog walkers dominate this park mid evenings. The parking There are plenty of spots available shade trees everywhere. Parking - there was 3-4 different locations to park but all require different street access. I'm not to family with Long Beach since I'm a new resident but I went down a small residential street and put me on the side of the park. Plenty of parking spaces here. Environment- plenty of people at the park at the time I arrived. I got there around 6-7pm to do a quick jog. Some cars parked at the parking lot smoking weed which I can careless. A couple bums but didn't harass for change or anything. Few other joggers as well. They did have a nice duck and geese pond here which I wasn't expecting at all. The park looked a lot smaller when I first drove up until I started my jog I explored more. Seems like they also have a local police station attached to the park as well. From what I've seen they have a rec area, outside fitness equipment area, basketball, duck pond, and tennis courts. Overall - will definitely come back to this park for my nighttime jog. read more

Tennis courts are in very good condition but the nets need replacement...There is one net that is thrashed, one held together with duct tape, another one without a center band...Only the second court nearest the Police Station is in optimum condition. Thank you for replacement of nets. read more

this park has the following amenities: Basketball Courts Community Center Picnic Area Playground Tennis Courts Volleyball Courts Weight Room Restrooms not unlike the party in my pants, it is approximately 22.85 acres of frolicking fun! the tennis and basketball courts, which are the main reason i come here, are very very well kept and clean. there is even an LB police department station at the northeast corner of the park for an added level of safety. it doesn't get any better that really. now if only the party in my pants had THAT kind of protection. read more

Shout out to fran d, 'cause this is one my favorite parks in Long Beach. Nestled between a sleepy working class neighborhood and an LBPD police station, it is a quiet little place with a duck pond a cemented trail which is great for walking/ biking/skating and large grassy areas for private picnics or simple chillin'. On the weekends you can drive by on Atlantic Avenue and see wedding parties taking pictures near the duck pond. There are many ways to have fun or escape bullshit at this park. When the sun starts to set in the spring and summertime, I like to bring Daisy as there aren't many other dogs around. She likes to walk regally along the dog path, acting like a German Shepherd. I keep an eye out for the cops at the police station, as Daisy is a beauty and they'd be JEALOUS!! Daisy likes the park but she still likes to talk shit to other dogs when they come into sight. I use this as practice in giving her corrections to remain silent when she sees another pet. She's getting it!! She doesn't trip about the ducks too much, maybe because her favorite toy is a rubber chicken that squawks, I don't know. I still don't trust her immature brain to total recall when a cat comes into view, tho. All bets are off!! But the 30 foot lead near the community center worked out cool as there was a wide area for fun and frolic. After playtime with the alpha, she is most mellow for the rest of the night and I can get some things done. But usually, I take a nap right along with her. ***Yawn*** Or watch some PBS. :p read more

I wish this park was cleaner. I parked on the south side of the park by a small playground with sand. I immediately smelled the dog park (which is on the other side) I'm pretty sure that this whole park is covered in dog urine I was going to lay a blanket down but decided against it. The park has a nice layout and I'm sure back in the day it was a great place to go. But I would much rather go to Reservoir Park on Wardlow! Reservoir Park -No sand = No mess -Decent bathrooms -Affordable Eats within walking distance -No law enforcement sirens or harassment. read more

I came to Scherer Park for the first time this month for the Grand Opening of the Uptown Dog Park (4676 Long Beach Blvd, Long Beach). There are several entrances, and the dog park is located off the Long Beach Blvd entrance. There is ample parking in the lot and additional parking along Atlantic Avenue. Check out my review of the dog park. On my 2nd visit, I decided to park at the Atlantic Ave entrance ( 4891 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach). This lot is in Bixby Knolls and connected with the LB Police Station. Having said that, the lot is large, well lit and safe. The stroll from the lot to the dog park was a nice long walk, and really gave us an opportunity to see this huge park end-to-end. The highlight at this Southwest entrance is definitely the long walking path circling a beautiful pond full of Geese and ducks. It's a truly amazing place to sit, reflect and take it all in, a true Oasis next to plenty of green grass to stretch your legs and play. As you continue along more amenities await. A community center area houses restrooms in addition to a playground, volleyball, basketball, tennis and basketball courts. These areas are more easily accessed at the 3rd entrance and parking area at the intersection of Pasadena and 46th Street. More greenspace, picnic areas and sidewalks wind toward the Uptown Dog Park where my crazy dog is quickly becoming a regular. Overall I think this park is totally kicks ass and I am so glad it's so close to home! read more

I LOVE/Hate this park. Allow me to explain. The Pros: 1- It's a very narrow but longish park. It's really a nice layout. Google Maps is your friend. 2- The Pond area is really a charming little place. On the opposite side of the park are two doggie-play enclosures. One for the big dogs and one for the little dogs. Excellent! 3- Of course during weekday hours the park is quiet and NICE... ;) The restrooms, basketball courts and community center area are all located in the center of the park. The tennis courts are on the north-east corner by the LBPD building. The Cons: 1- If you are buying a house and you can help it, do NOT buy a house next to or bordering a park. At the very least go do a scouting mission on the weekends or at night to see what kind of action is going on. The park is directly to my north and separated by my back yard fence. 2- The Pond area is FILTHY with bird poop. Make sure your little ones stay away from it. It can make them ill. This is a budgetary problem as the area is not being cleaned up properly. The area is also filthy with human trash. This is not the park's fault. Our population in general is now more discourteous than it use to be. What can you do. 3- The basketball courts. I feel sorry for my neighbors whom live just south and across the courts. It can be 10 AT NIGHT on a weekday and the courts are filled up with young men (mostly) whooping it up and having a blast playing and listening to "Ni**a, I'm gonna put a bullet in you..." blasting away on car audio system while dropping hoops. There's absolutely no consideration for folks whom have to get up early to go to work so they can pay their property taxes to support the public parks... 4- The homeless. On a semi-regular basis we have to call the LBPD to get them out or they start to build up camp sites. I feel bad for them but I'm glad I'm not one of them. I bust butt to make sure I'm not. Do not let your kids go into the ivy. Human waste is there. read more

Other than that, if you can ignore the 2 cons, this park has many cute little bridges, waterfalls, and gazebos to take pics under or near. This is a nice park. The ducks, pond, bridges & trees make for very nice pics (especially selfies). There are tables & benches. The playground is cool. They also have tennis & basketball courts. The restrooms are gross. I will never use them again. I'll leave the park before I step foot in those restrooms again. Other than that it's a really nice park. P.S. WATCH OUT FOR THOSE DUCKS. Took my dog for a walk here. At first I thought what a cute little park, but I was dismayed at all the trash that was in the duck pond. I wish people had more respect for green spaces as it does provide a nice green space for the area. Maybe the city can note this. What is interesting is it is right next door to a police station, so you would think people would have more respect. read more

The grass is kinda brown, however, that is due to the weather conditions that seem to be a yearly epidemic in the past 5 years, however, great place to have an impromptu pick nic, although our pic nic compromised with junk food from the 7-11, however, it was still nice. I'm commenting only on the dog park and the basketball courts. The dog park itself is okay, all dirt and some seating. However, there isn't much seating in the shade and it seems like all the dogs that go there are pitbulls. My sister's dog Lucy can handle herself so she doesn't have a problem, but I'd beware if you have a small male dog...he'll probably get tore up to pieces lol jk. The basketball courts aren't that great either. There are two courts and it's caged, but the courts are way to slippery. They need to clean it or something. I thought it was a real convenient spot because I can go take Lucy to meet some dogs and I can squeeze in a game of basketball afterwards. read more

Sorry to say but this park does not deserve 4 stars. Where do I begin... It's always dirty, and I don't mean dirt and sand, but trash and cigarette butts, I guess trashy. There's always people sitting around smoking and drinking, and when I say smoking I mean both cigarettes and marijuana. The bathrooms are yucky, yeah I know, what more do you expect from a park bathroom, well, I've been to a lot of parks and most of them are well kept. Now it does have a lake or pond or some sort of water feature, but there's nothing nice about it. Poor birds, they have to live with it. I know with the birds living there that may be a cause of some of the filth, but when a park has the feature, parks and recs should make sure it's taken care of, or get rid of it all together... By the way, birds don't eat chips and human food or drink human drinks, so they don't produce litter.... One more thing that bothers me, how is it that the police station is right at the top of the hill of this park but there's always, I mean always foul mouth, cigarettes/ marijuana smoking, drunk people hanging out. They can't even drive through here and there through out the day while they're out or just bored.... How is it that this city was awarded for nice parks! Yeah, right they should of have to Carson if they were going for the urban areas. read more

The City and the park users have made improvements to the Dog Park since these reviews. The dirt has been replaced by decomposed granite which is easier to maintain and reduces the smells of a park frequented by a large number of dogs. We have brought in moveable chairs, there is a water fountain on both sides of the park. There is a growing volunteer group working with the City to maintain and improve the dog park. We have held dog training sessions, educational seminars, agility classes, potlucks and plan outings to the Rosie's Dog Beach and other dog-related activities. The Dog Park, like any other community based group, is growing and remains flexible enough to meet the needs of the park users. We hold an small breed race event in June - the only one in Long Beach where ANY breed dog under 30 pounds can join in the fun.
