Very clean store and the staff is friendly. Great items to choose from and the prices aren't bad.

Going into any bookstore is dangerous (my partner and I could spend an entire pay check in one- not…read moreto mention also being able to spend days looking at everything). We love going to smaller independent bookstores but once a year or so, we go to bigger stores like Indigo/Chapters for a date. It had been over a year since we had visited this store and it was so much fun! The service was great, from the cashier being super polite to another staff member ensuring everyone was personally told about the tables full of the best sales. The prices are great as they always have 3 for $10 book sales. We were going to enjoy their cafe area on the second floor but we had worked up an appetite so we went to Quesada's nearby instead. We plan on going back during the winter to fully enjoy the hot beverages from the cafe for a cozy experience but truly- if it's been a while since you've picked up a book, go roam the aisles, look at the books, toys, home products, music, stationary, candles, clothing.... They have everything. If you're ever looking for a different gift idea for anyone, there's bound to be SOMETHING here. Now... it's time to read one of the 8 new books I got.

This Chapters is located in a parking mall and is quite large. Along with selling books and magazines, they sell some electronic items including iPod Touches, iPads, Fitbits, fitness trackers, and Kobo eReaders. There is free WiFi but you must either be a Bell Mobile customer or you must be a member of their Plum Rewards (free) program or their iRewards (paid) program. If you are a Bell Mobile customer, you enter your phone number and you get an SMS with the code/instructions to log into their WiFi so unless you have an SMS plan with Bell, you will be dinged for the incoming SMS. There are some chairs scattered around the store where patrons can sit and look through the books before deciding whether they want to purchase it or not. Upstairs, there is also a Starbucks coffee shop with tables & chairs. I'm not sure if you're allowed to take your books/magazines into this area (which you haven't purchased yet) but I just wouldn't feel comfortable doing this. I've always found the staff to be very helpful here.

The Maxi & Cie store is in Pointe-Claire horrendously run. I cite two recent experiences:…read more 1. I bought a PCMobile Prepaid mobile SIM card at this store. This is a private label SIM card sold by the company that runs Maxi. The service was a complete rip-off--as in outright fraud. It did not work. I was unable to log into any account to use the service. I could not download the managing app on my iPhone. I don't expect the regulators to do anything about this until they get publicly embarrasesed in the press. 2. Last week I bough a quart of Quelbon 1% milk that was curdled by the expiry date. For $2.08 it is not worth returning to the store to confront them, which may be why they sell expired dairy products. Bottom line: this store should be shut down.

Maxi has excellent prices for many items, including low prices for bulk items. Sometimes prices are better than Costco, and you don't have to buy a boatload's worth. They carry many President's Choice and No Name brand products, and have great sales every week. My favourite new discovery is Joe Fresh, their line of affordable clothing and accessories. I have spent a ridiculous amount of money at Joe Fresh on cute kids' shoes, winter pyjamas, jeans, tees, and blankets, as well as several items for me. Along with the quality of items, the best thing about the clothing - and other household or pharmacy goods -- is the convenience: I can pick up these items at the same time that I do my grocery shopping, and not have to make another trip to the store or mall. For a busy mom of two youngsters, that alone makes shopping here worth it.

The NOVA thrift shops are stocked by donations from all over the West Island. They are non-profit organizations run by the Order of Nurses and all the money raised goes to their charitable activities: "The primary mandate is to provide specialized care and support in the home to cancer and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) clients during the course of the illness and particularly in the palliative stage. Other programs include bereavement support for children and adults, adult day centers, home support services and foot care clinics. ALS and Alzheimer Caregivers Support Groups are also available." So that's wonderful and merits all the stars. This NOVA location has furniture, some really gorgeous old tables, chairs and lamps at super reasonable prices. There's also a great collection of books, clothes, kitchen ware and other treasures. The other two NOVAs don't have the furniture, and the one in Ste Anne's had the most exciting dishes and ceramics and fur coats. If you love looking for secondhand treasures these are sweet spots in beautiful neighbourhoods that feel like old villages, a surprising break from the city just a 20ish minute drive from downtown. The staff are as friendly and dedicated as you might imagine and everything they have for sale is clean and high quality. Lovely spot to donate your goods as well! All the love for NOVA.
