Above all I mentioned that many people in town are low income and she could not seem to care less. Prices are far too high for a 'thrift' store.

The NOVA thrift shops are stocked by donations from all over the West Island. They are non-profit organizations run by the Order of Nurses and all the money raised goes to their charitable activities: "The primary mandate is to provide specialized care and support in the home to cancer and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) clients during the course of the illness and particularly in the palliative stage. Other programs include bereavement support for children and adults, adult day centers, home support services and foot care clinics. ALS and Alzheimer Caregivers Support Groups are also available." So that's wonderful and merits all the stars. This NOVA location has furniture, some really gorgeous old tables, chairs and lamps at super reasonable prices. There's also a great collection of books, clothes, kitchen ware and other treasures. The other two NOVAs don't have the furniture, and the one in Ste Anne's had the most exciting dishes and ceramics and fur coats. If you love looking for secondhand treasures these are sweet spots in beautiful neighbourhoods that feel like old villages, a surprising break from the city just a 20ish minute drive from downtown. The staff are as friendly and dedicated as you might imagine and everything they have for sale is clean and high quality. Lovely spot to donate your goods as well! All the love for NOVA.

Village des Valeurs is no bueno. However, this is the one VV I'll bother with. The staff are kind and efficient, the quantity of stuff here makes it fun to pick through, but the actual reason I ever go here is for the jeans. There is a massive jeans section and I think because it's West Island you can actually find quality brands in good shape and nice styles and all sizes.

I've asked her why she doesn't shop the thrift stores in MTL or Laval and reading these comments IU now understand. I, just recently, bought a Pioneer Elite 7.1 channel Home theater amp, like new for $32, an Ekornes Stressless leather recliner with ottoman for $70 (She bought a new one last year in MTL for $4500), sweaters: $0.50, Powered Klipsch REF subwoofer- $2. Other than overhead, much of which is subsidized, the profit margin is almost $100%! - I am beginning to see her point but you locals should just not shop there and sell/buy your stuff on KIJIJI(sp) or craigslist. They also treat you with gratitude here when donating and are eager to give you a tax receipt even for a lampshade. I think that Lysa A. summed it up nicely.

A pair of pants I asked to have taken in at the waist and legs came back with one leg too tight and the other even tighter. There was a difference of almost 3/4 of an inch in the taper. I insisted they be fixed, and the second attempt wasn't much better. I also brought a vintage coat from the 30s to find out if it was worth modernizing. The tailor assured me the fabric was hugely expensive wool. I told him I'd want to get the coat cleaned first to make sure it would look good, and he told me not to worry; he was going to take care of everything. When I asked if he was sure, he told me "Please, I'm here 30 years..." Well, when I got the coat back, looked like it had been sewn by a student, and it was just as unclean as it had been when I dropped it off. I brought it to a dry cleaner and the stains, as I suspected, could not be lifted. Also, the coat wasn't wool. The shop needs more craftsmanship and less con. I wouldn't go back there to hem a pair of Levi's, let alone trust them with anything of value.
