Having grown up on a farm/ranch in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, I've been shopping at "farm…read moreco-op" stores for over 50 years now. Before moving to the Redding area 3+ years ago, I was a member of the Douglas County Farmers Co-Op in Roseburg, OR for 30+ years. I spent many thousands of $$ there every year to keep my sheep, horses, chickens, dogs, cats and 30 acres of land happy, healthy, and well stocked. After retiring, selling our farm, and moving to NorCal to be near our adult children, I was very surprised to find that there wasn't a "farmers co-op" in the Redding area, what with all the farming and ranching in the area. Tractor Supply tried to "pinch hit," for us--but since TSC was only about one-third the square footage of the Douglas County Farmers Co-op, there's just no way for TSC to match the vast selection of Douglas County Farmers Co-op's True Value Hardware items, clothing, boots, shoes, animal feed, veterinary supplies & medications, garden, yard, home & landscaping supply, logging, irrigation, submersible pumps for wells, and much more--"well," you get the idea..... I was thrilled to find out that Grange Co-op has just expanded to Redding (from the 6 locations they have in Southern Oregon, plus Yuba City, CA). Grange is larger than Tractor Supply, although not as large as the DC Farmers Co-op. I got great help yesterday, when I was out looking at some fencing, stock watering tanks, and tomato cages in their secure storage yard at the parking lot in front of the store. A couple of the items were not price marked yet, so a Grange employee tried to look up the prices on the "Grange App" on his cellphone, but needed to run into the store to find out the information. He was cheerful, energetic, and willing to go "above & beyond" the usual levels of service (running from outside into the store, then back outside again in the 90+ degrees Fahrenheit Redding weather). Because of our family's previous membership in the DC Farmers Co-op, we got a nice discount to sign up for their lifetime membership plan. We are very happy!

Last time I was in Chef'store I purchased bone in, skin on thighs, they were about the size of pigeon thighs, couldn't serve those to guests. They no longer carry a LOT of things that the old Cash n Carry use to have. 10 pound bag of onions was a pretty decent price, but the yellow onions in that bag were really small, not medium to large like the old Cash n Carry. I'll be sticking with CostCo from now on to purchase what I need, more of a variety, better quality, and priced more reasonably, even WITH the membership fee.

They made us very happy because it made us feel safe and happy to be there. The store was very clean and all of the items that were on the shelf were in the correct order. I hate when I walk into a store and none of the items are on the shelf that you were looking for. This location does not have that problem at all. Every time I go in to this location it really is an easy place to shop. I try to go here as often as possible. I got here instead of Walmart and target in some of the bigger department stores just because it is a little smaller and much easier to find the things that you need. This place is very clean as well. I hate when I go into a store and everything is super dirty. This location does not have that problem at all. The staff is very helpful and they will assist you with everything that you need. All in all this location definitely gets four stars for me. I would give it five stars but the only issue we did have is the parking. There are always so many cars in the parking lot sometimes it makes it a little bit difficult to park. But besides that this place is awesome. They also have really good produce. My wife loves to buy the tomatoes from this location

The new space is cool, I guess, but let's get real: B&N is no longer a bookstore, strictly speaking. It makes most of its money on its cafe, and when it obtained this much larger space it didn't expand the book and magazine selections. It expended the toy, puzzle, board game, LP record, stationary, and other sections. It's practically a leisure-time general store now. The LP selection isn't half-bad, but I suspect it's all digital-to-analog crap. At least they still sell books and magazines, though even there it's changed. Surprise, surprise, the religion section (focused on evangelical Christianity) is huge. Looking for a book on the historical Jesus? You'll find the most popular, unscholarly examples here--likely at least one by a local author! On the other hand, if you're looking for a book by well-regarded California author TC Boyle, you'll currently find a single volume of one of his least-regarded novels ("East is East") on the shelves. A decade ago they'd have had 10 of his books to choose from. Still a pretty good spot to kill a couple of hours, except when they're having storybook readings to kids in the cafe on Saturday mornings. It gets LOUD.

They make wonderful suggestions for things I might like. They're always honest if something is working or doing nothing for me. I'll look online and kind of "preshop" then I go in and show them what I'd like to try on. The staff sets me up in the dressing room with my picks. I try on my picks and I'm out the door in no time. He also offered style advice (as did the other Associate whose name I did not get), on a sweater I wasn't sure about due to the length. Lina and Stacey are amazing and your store will go under without them. Other than the management, the store is so messy it's hard to find anything. The prices don't match with the quality of the clothing. The carpet and condition of the store is disgusting. I am shocked people don't get sick from the mold that has to be in the carpet.
