The blocks occupied feel like its own little community in the middle of the bigger city. It definitely has it's own vibe and is uniquely East Nashville. When we are in East, we normally make it point to stop in a shop or two. International Coffee, Galena Garlic and Adobe Mercantile are usually spots we frequent when wandering around, and Gift Horse is a cool place for a quirky or local gift for folks. Food wise, Maru and East Creamery are always on point and hit the spot! Hours of each shop differ, so make sure you look specifically at the hours of the places you want to visit. There is no real consistency amongst the shops from an overall hours perspective, which can be a tad frustrating. Parking is a bit wonky as well, nothing really dedicated at all times. There are a few pay lots nearby and street parking is plentiful in the area. Overall, Shoppes on Fatherland is a cool East community and is a good spot to spend a little time when you have nothing going on. It's always an after or before dinner/drink place for us.

I started going to this place to get items to stock our schools concessions. It's a little bit…read morepricier than Sam's Club on candy items, but it's a good option when Sam's is out of something. I really like that they sell the 20oz Coke products. Most places only carry the 16oz versions. Although I have never really asked any questions of the staff, this place has always been friendly to me. I wish they had later hours in the evening and open on weekends, but I understand because their client base is probably not large enough to warrant paying someone to stay open later. Nashville seems to be in short supply for places like this. I'm glad Merchant Mart is here for concessions type businesses.

This place feels a lot like it... but... I don't know. Part of it is probably the location, right in the middle of industrial Elm Hill Pike. Part of it is the ambiance, which feels more like a small warehouse than a store. Part of it is the very blase attitude of the employees: they're very whatever, when I'm looking for a smile and some chitchat. They've got lots of great snacks and they're cheap cheap cheap. Stuff looks like vending food stuff and at least 25% cheaper. Loving that. There's janitorial stuff, business stuff, office supplies, that kind of thing. You can get in and out there faster than Sam's, and it's reasonably priced, but it's got a chilly attitude, and not very inviting.

I like the idea of the Idea Hatchery. This stretch of Woodland is full of 'hidden' businesses that…read moreblend in with the older homes on the street. Because of the name, I guessed the Idea Hatchery was a shared workspace or a writing collective. It *only* took me [redacted] years to get out of my car and walk in to see what's what. Flanked by an antiques shop and an art gallery (if you've done Tomato Arts Fest you know right where this is), the collective's appearance is a bit nondescript but that makes the discovery all the better, no? Inside the threshold are eight uniquely (east) Nashville businesses. As an incubator, the Hatchery is a perfect spot to test out concepts and gain sea legs before opting for a bigger location or an expanded footprint. It's a great go-between from online/out of the house to stand alone brick and mortar. I believe this is the spiritual parent to the Shoppes on Fatherland. Right now the current occupants tend to skew a bit 'female' in what they do (fashion, art, etc.) but that's not to say that there isn't a lot for a number of demographics to choose from. Selfishly, I'm hoping that some sort of food/treat business takes up residence in the shops. Toffee? Taffy? Shaved Ice? I can keep going folks. Actually, an old-timey, regional candy store would fit in well. Boom. I just found your newest tenant. Sort of. East End has a lot of fun businesses to explore. Next time you're in the neighborhood, scoot just a bit past that (locally) famous intersection and get a taste of what the area has to offer. I think you'll enjoy what you find. At the very least, it's a nice way to pass the time on a lazy weekend day.

Out of most of the Dollar Tree locations in the Nashville area, this one is a favorite...if I had to have one. Service is usually pretty friendly here and they always have more than one line open, which is a rarity for this brand. Shelves are stocked well, boxes aren't strewn across the aisles haphazardly and for the most part, it's a fairly clean location. My main reason for stops here are normally Tupperware, gift wrapping supplies or the random one-off item. However I have been known to scope the dry goods aisles and scoop up some seasoning or condiments on the cheap. No shame! Overall, solid Dollar Tree location that comes in clutch when needed.

This family dollar appears kind of rough, but it's not as bad inside. Things are well stocked and pretty easy to find- though this location is a bit confusing as they have a ramp in the middle of the store that leads to other items (you will see what I mean if you go in). This particular day they had a few aisles that were messy due to restocking and such, but it wasn't even too bad. The thing I came in here looking for was blocked off by two huge u boats full of stuff, so I just wheeled them out of the way to grab the item- and wheeled them back. Not a huge deal, and I'm sure if I would've asked someone would've done it for me. The employees were friendly during check out which I appreciate. This isn't a place I frequent but it's convenient if you need something cheap.

I've reviewed places like this before, and I always try to word my descriptions delicately, saying things like "urban apparel," but the fact of the matter is a white dude like myself could never pull these clothes off. That being said, all their stuff is reasonably priced, and some of it is pretty cool. It's a step up from 615 Ave. Marty's has plus-size clothes for larger gentlemen or just dudes who like to rock the XXXL look. Most of their shirts (tees, polos and a few button-ups) are pretty cheap, and their selection is extensive. They have some pretty awesome shoes and hats, and their staff is really helpful, even if you're a dude wearing skinny jeans and flip-flops. They have a huge selection of Dickies in just about every color imaginable. You probably won't find me in there (I need a place that carries mediums and smalls), but if this is your style, it's pretty affordable and worth checking out.

To my credit, people are very poor at explaining it. To use another idiom, it's more or less the same thing as "Beggars can't be choosers". If you get 'ish for free, you have no right to bitch and moan about its quality. Anyway, the items in this shop are not free, but they are very much gift-worthy. If you want to seem funny or thoughtful or clever or witty towards someone you love (or perhaps someone you want to love you), this is the place to go. All manner of knick-knacks that are not junk, that are generally interesting, enlightening, or useful. Like a horse, with real good teeth.

Produce is the only section I've found that is sometimes a bit picked over. The best time to shop is a weekday morning (if your work schedule allows). Weeknight evenings also aren't too bad, as long as you can avoid the after-work rush. I almost always use self-checkout, and the team members working in that area have always been friendly and seem engaged. While this is not my favorite grocery store in town, it's a good spot to stop when you're in need of a few items.
