I struggled with the "Never look a gifthorse in the mouth" idiom for eons. It made me think I was on the spectrum and had somehow evaded detection by the Florida Public School System. To my credit, people are very poor at explaining it. To use another idiom, it's more or less the same thing as "Beggars can't be choosers". If you get 'ish for free, you have no right to bitch and moan about its quality. Anyway, the items in this shop are not free, but they are very much gift-worthy. If you want to seem funny or thoughtful or clever or witty towards someone you love (or perhaps someone you want to love you), this is the place to go. We were out exploring the city, looking for some Nashville specific swag we could take back to Atlanta and happened upon Gift Horse and the Fatherland Shops in East Nashville. To start, the Shoppes on Fatherland is this cute little retail set up that features so many unique and local retailers from antique shops to clothing and everything in between. We wondered through many shops, but found exactly what we were looking for at Gift Horse. The store is packed with unique and fun items from pins, notebooks, clothing, coozies, post cards, magnets, bags, cards, etc...The overall vibe was quirky and cute for sure! They had the most random items that made you giggle and somehow made you realize even though you didn't need it, you now wanted it! On top of the goods, the staff was super friendly and helpful from entry to exit. We ended up leaving with a few things for ourselves, and for other folks...so, our trip was a huge success! When we are back in Nashville, Gift Horse will certainly be on the list of places to visit! read more

A destination gift shop when you're looking for an original or special greeting card (for example, I recently saw a cute "I'm glad you came out [as LGBT]" card) or a quirky/thoughtful gift. I finally made it over to Gift Horse for the first time after a friend told me about it months ago. This store is ADORABLE. I love the bright, airy atmosphere, and the goods they stock are equally fun, funky and bright. If you love stationery, enamel pins or accessories you'll fall in love with this place as soon as you walk in the door. The selection of goods is a carefully curated from a mix of local and faraway artists, and it also includes some vintage Nashville goods (like a World's Fair drinking glass). The employee who helped me was super knowledgeable about how all of the stock is sourced and even told me that the store is planning to make connections with and sell comics and zines from local artists; and when they told me that the owner has a French Bulldog, it certainly explained the abundance of adorable Frenchie-themed merch. I'll definitely be going back to Gift Horse to pick up more gifts and stationery. Plus, I'll pick up another cute bag and a postcard! read more

I should have never wound up at/in Gift Horse. I am not crafty. I've been on Etsy one time in my life. I'm not female. Yet, I wound up here, enjoyed browsing, bought something, and would go back. That's a win... and a surprise. I walked in on a rainy Tuesday, not feeling particularly Christmas-y. That all changed with some Someday At Christmas. That song will always give me the holiday chills and feels. Nicely played, Gift Horse. I was happy to see other people in the store, browsing and what not-ing. I always feel awkward when I am in a relatively small space by myself. With others, it's easier to concentrate on the task at hand: looking around and figuring out the present situation. If I had to describe Gift Horse to someone, I would say it's a repository of all things craft: prints, cards, jewelry, bags, soap, etc. with a focus on Nashville, a perspective on the South and a dedication to anything small, folksy and small batch. Be advised: the store offers more than knick-knacks but if you're specifically searching for something small, this might be a good place to start looking. The owner is a really nice woman and she spent some time chatting with me about her inventory and new, future additions to the business. I found some artisan soaps I needed to have (you know I have a thing for fancy soap) and spied some prints I think would go well in a couple of friend's homes. I'm curious to see how Gift Horse evolves with time and am very happy to have spent some time and money discovering and shopping local. read more

Gift Horse is a quaint business in the Shoppes of Fatherland. It's larger than many others as it has two sides. As a fan of letterpress cards and posters, they had a nice selection at reasonable prices. It also has a book/graphic novel corner as well as small items perfect for gifting like coffee mugs and Nashville related goods. Their offerings were thoughtfully chosen to fit the store's overall vibe. The thing that turned us off was being totally ignored by the shop keeper. I prefer a quick greeting and then being left to explore, but she didn't even acknowledge our existence as she was too ensconced in a lengthy catch up with two friends. I'm all for enjoying your work, but don't forget that you have customers. When you make them feel as if they're not wanted, they'll leave (which we did to go spend money in other Shoppes on Fatherland). read more

I feel like such a fool as I sit and write this that I didn't catch the name of the gals working there but they were so welcoming out first day, we went back again! Found an amazing vintage Opryland pennant in Tenn Gallon and Gift Horse has lovely stationary, journals, books and all kinds of small but thoughtful gifts for anyone in your life. I started following Gift Horse on Instagram so while in Nashville, I knew I had to stop in. (The shop is located in Fatherland District, along with several other independent shops, so this is a great area to buy gifts for yourself or friends.) Gift Horse had an awesome selection of notebooks, cards, calendars, jewelry, totes, art prints, tee shirts, stickers, adorable cups & glasses, plus a pinball machine. that's right... This is such a fun and funky little gift shop. You know how a lot of handmade-driven shops have a disorganized, consignment feel to them? That is NOT the case with this store! They have a great mix of mostly artist-created products including a huge selection of letterpress cards and art prints that range from totally bourgeois (fabulous La Croix print anyone?) to mildly bizarre (images my 7 year old asks me to explain and I quickly redirect her to the nearby pinball machine). They have a lot of charming Nashville themed t-shirts, totes, and prints that are sure to appeal to locals and tourists alike. They also aren't so precious about their merch that they don't sell well-designed but non-handmade lines like ban.do. I mean, I love ban.do and every time I see it in a store I audibly squeal, so go on with your bad self Gift Horse. Every item seems carefully selected and it all comes together in a bright space with a witty spirit and a tangible love for artists. It is truly a stand out shopping experience in Nashville. Warning: This store is amazing and you will want to buy everything in there! I have wanted to check out this cute little store for awhile now but always found myself in this area when it was closed. I had a friend in town and finally had an excuse to go day shopping at the Shoppes on Fatherland. The first store we went into was Gift Horse and it met and exceeded all of my expectations. When you first walk in you just see color color color! Fun fun fun! This store offers a variety of products. Prints, cards, bags, gold pencils, vintage knick-knacks, books, jewelry, pins, etc etc. There really is something for everyone. I was obsessed with all of the prints here. They range from a cute illustrated map of Tennessee to an astronaut with flowers bursting out of his helmet. I already have a plan to go back and get a few once I find some vintage frames for them. This will also be my go to spot for unique gifts. For a reasonable price you can get a really cool gift for someone and support a local (or not local but still cool) artist. I really think everyone can find something in this store they love, even if you don't consider yourself the most funky or artistic person. Or you can find a gift for someone you know that is! Where to start about how amazing this store is. Since leaving Brooklyn a year ago, one of the major things I missed were the gift stores. Ever since stumbling into Gift Horse that void has been filled. The owner is incredibly kind and welcoming. She made us feel like we're shop regulars on our first visit. The inventory is equal parts eclectic and adorable. If you're looking for a fun and unique gift for someone, you can 100% find something at Gift Horse. And with the addition of Brain freeze comics in the same space it has definitely become a "Shut Up and take my money situation" very quickly. Gift Horse is such a special and unique shop in east Nashville, walking distance from five points. It was one of the first local shops we went to when we moved here, and quickly got to know the owner and realized that she stocked a ton of local and small women owned businesses and amazing art. It's my go-to for a sweet card, wrapping paper and little treats for friends! I love the friendly vibe and to see how supportive Gift Horse is of local artists!
