Most Dollar Generals…read moreare messy, unorganized, and understaffed but this one is always tidy and the employees are really friendly. In a tiny town, you don't have many options for the essentials and Dollar General is there for you. The kiddo really wanted ice cream but being winter time all of the shops are closed and the grocery store closed at 8. So, determined to get her ice cream (and other items) we went to Dollar General. They came through with the pink ice cream the kiddo demanded and the cashier gave her a balloon! How thoughtful was that? This is a great store in a great town filled with great people. I know the song goes "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaraunt", but the same goes for Dollar General of Saugatuck.

You could buy practically anything there. I'm so glad they are so close by and their App is fantastic. I save so much on my household supply needs plus the added $5.00 off on Saturdays makes my shopping there so worthwhile. Plus the staff has for the most part been so nice & friendly. If I could give this place a negative star I would. Where do I even start. First off the manager of…read morethe store is extremely rude. If you come in 15 minutes before they close she will nastily say to you you have 15 minutes to get your stuff and get out of the store or we are locking the doors. Most days they have at least two to three people working but almost every time I go in there there is only one person working the cash register and that creates extremely long lines. You will see the other two workers outside smoking in front of the building on the sidewalk well the other worker is absolutely swamped with customers and doing the best that they can to get people moved through the line. We bought a pair of sleep pants for a Christmas present there and when we got home realized that they were split in half on the inside inseam. They do not rotate their clothing very well and obviously they do not inspect it. They do not keep a very good eye on their ice coolers as well, I had paid for a large bag of ice and when I went out to the ice cooler there were only three bags of large ice left and they were all busted open period when I went in and asked if I could just exchange the large bag for two small bags they were quite rude with me asking that. Also some of their food products that we have purchased there have been out of date so they are obviously not checking their food very well. I would highly recommend that you go somewhere else to do your shopping.

I spotted some halogen light bulbs that I've been paying $7 for from Amazon for (of course) just a buck. We're staying in a condo is South Haven so this has been a tremendous spot to stop in and get toys for the kids we want to last no more than a week, random cleaning supplies, party decorations, etc. Way better than Dollar General. I was waiting in line behind an elderly woman who was doing self checkout at the Allegan DG on…read moreLincoln Rd. on 1/25/25 @ 2:00 pm. Let me start by saying the self checkout isn't really fully self checkout because an employee stands there and watches you and maybe presses a button on their side during your transaction. This poor woman in front of me wanted to do 2 transactions. One I'm guessing was for her household and grocery items and the other for some valentines items. She was struggling scanning and bagging her items and the store employee just stood there watching never offered to help or anything. Then the cashier called another employee over and asked him to take over for her so she could so something. This employee at least helped the woman bag her items. The woman checking out was so flustered because the line was getting long behind her and she said to me to go ahead of her 2nd transaction a couple of times and I told her no worries, In not in a hurry but she insisted saying she still had all the other stuff in her cart to ring up and I only had 2 items. It just really rubbed me the wrong way that the fist cashier could see the poor woman struggling to do the self checkout and didn't even bother to help her!! Come on DG do better at customer service! Our elderly need assistance and everyplace that has gone to self checkouts needs to remember the elderly when they make those decisions!!
