If, on the other hand, you're a gelato snob, and named your Pomeranian, "Preston-Charles", "Binky", or "Coco", go across the street to Paradiso. My family and I decided to get gelato after eating delicious pizza nearby, and we stopped here because the display for the gelato is pretty much on the sidewalk almost. And you know what? It's not as bad as other reviews make it out to be tbh. I'm writing this review much later than I should have, so I forgot the exact flavors that we got. However, the gelato actually had pretty good texture, like when you scoop some gelato with a spoon, it has a really nice pull compared to regular ice cream. I liked that a lot. The flavor of the gelato is where I see the complaints, and I think it's valid. However, I kind of liked the suppressed flavors, especially after such a heavy dinner because it was super refreshing and not too sweet. I think people are accustomed to having too much sugar, and I thought this was a nice change of pace. On the other hand, the flavors did feel artificial. So I settled on here, seeing that my Yelp friends' reviews were mixed, but promising. Perhaps I chose...poorly. The tiramisu gelato was devoid of any strong flavor. I detected some chocolate and a faint amount of coffee, but nothing much else. True, the texture of the gelato was nice, but having a flavorless gelato left me unsatisfied. Every time I've been to Italy, I constantly have a cup of gelato in my hand. I'm very committed to trying as many flavors and variations as possible throughout the country and get pretty irritated when certain pesky museums won't let me enter with one. Needless to say, I'm very familiar with and fond of the dessert, and I use a shop's pistachio flavor as a test of it's quality. How does the North End's fare compare? Unfortunately, Gelateria's version doesn't even come close to the milky treat of the motherland. Straightaway I could sense that this gelato wasn't authentic, as the pistachio was green instead of white. I sampled it, and the flavor tasted shallow and a bit artificial. Each small cup allows two flavors, so I blindly chose coconut and tiramisu. Where's the luscious, creamy texture? The rich, decadent flavors? I think that these two choices were the best I could have gotten under the circumstances, and they both tasted fine and blended well together. The tiramisu had nice notes of coffee and liqueur, and the coconut had tiny flakes of the real thing. However, all the ones I sampled were far too icy and diluted. One of the best characteristics of gelato is it's creamy consistency, and that was desperately lacking here. They also inconveniently informed us that the shop is cash only after serving us, so I had to wait inside as my friend ran over to the ATM, hoping they didn't melt before he returned. As far as North End desserts go, I'd recommend sticking to the pastries down the street. read more

There was also a cannoli station where you could choose your own shell ( chocolate dipped or regular) and fillings ( Nutella, ricotta, hazelnut, pistachio. Chocolate chip)and topping ( chocolate chip, hazelnut, almond). They are stuffed to the brim right in front of your eyes. We came here specifically because we got scowled at in (thought not kicked out of) a cafe a couple of doors down, because we dared walk in there brandishing wares from a competitor. That was not an issue here. The moment we were close enough to the counter to look like we might be interested, a staff member was in front of us immediately offering samples of everything. These folks get it right. The flavors were interesting, and the prices were decent for gelato in the area. My bacio gelato had an intense dark flavor; I thought it should have been creamier until I realized there was ground hazelnut in it (good for me, bad for anyone with nut issues). The shop is deceptively larger than it may initially appear. There's a space in the back which can seat a larger party, and a rest room beyond that, out of sight of the entrance. In nice weather, there's plenty of tables closer to the front to dine and chat and people watch. There are several competing shops which sell gelato in the immediate area. This one is not "last chance for gelato when exiting westbound," but it's the last of the ones in this general area, and still close enough to enjoy it at North End Park if you want. So my review is no doubt more favorable because Gelateria was the answer to earlier issues. As we walked through the North End my wife wanted some Gelato so we decided to give Gigi Gelateria a try. We were welcomed by a very polite employee who quickly took our order and made our gelato. It was nice to not have to enter the store to order our item since they has their front window stand. The portion size was decent for the price and my wife ended up buying coconut which she thought was great. We spent a bit under $5 and had a nice little desert while finishing up our stroll. To be honest, I did not find anything terrible about this place and every time I come to this place, I actually enjoyed the gelato. I do not want to sound a little cocky, but I have eaten some tasty gelato in three different cities on two different continents: Rome, Florence, and... Shanghai. I am fairly confident I can give this place a fair assessment. The gelato I had in Rome was a little icy with some creaminess. The gelato I had in Florence had a slightly more creamy texture but less icy. The gelato I had in Shanghai had more creaminess, a little less iciness, but had some flair in the flavor. How does this place compare to the gelato places I had in Italy and China? I got a couple of flavors here, the Stracciatella and the Gianduia Torino. Stracciatella is a vanilla based gelato mixed with some chocolate chips. I had a very similar flavor when I visited Rome which also had Stracciatella in the name. As for the Gianduia Torino, this is a special type of chocolate flavor mixed with hazelnuts. As for the creaminess and flavor for the gelato, it definitely had some iciness, and I could also taste some creaminess. I really enjoyed the more vanilla based gelato due to the creaminess in the flavor in the Stracciatella. As for the Gianduia Torino I really liked the nutty texture. I came back again, and also had a Tiramisu flavored gelato. I believe I had a very similar flavored gelato when I was in Florence. It had a good balance of creaminess and iciness, but the flavor tasted a little weird, and it was definitely less creamy compared to the version I had in Florence. It was still a fairly good gelato. The price for a small cup is about $4.95, which was probably almost the equivalent price I paid for a small cup of gelato in Florence, so I can understand why people might think this place is a little overpriced. It's also one size and one price. The man who served me the gelato was a little rude, but during my second visit, the girl who served me gelato was actually really nice and really pretty. Overall, I did not find the gelato here to be really terrible, and I would say that the gelato quality is almost on par with the gelato I had in China but not in Italy. Would I recommend this place to someone who is actually craving for gelato while visiting the somewhat decent city of Boston? If that person is open to any good gelato place, then yes. Is this the best place to get gelato in Boston? Probably not, it's not high on my recommendations but it's not a bad choice. read more
