Neat restaurant themed after the cartoon dogpatch. Food is good, I had a salad which was delicious! . Service was excellent!

It is a unique and catchy place that will confuse many because little Abner has not been in the funny pages in 50 years. For those of us that remember or slightly remember little Abner and the whole dog patch clan this will be a trip down memory lane. The food was better than average actually large portions delivered fast And by friendly wait staff. There was nothing bad about my experience. In fact it was quite delightful and it was fun looking over the menu with the names in the phrasing from lil Abner comics. The salads were huge, and full of fresh vegetables very nice. My White fish basket was delicious. The fries were perfect. The fish was properly prepared, the walleye was good as well. My friend had the ribeye and she liked it. It was well prepared very nice and a good value four people 100 bucks.

We stopped by Dogpatch when we realized the restaurant we were planning on going to was closed. It was a solid 3 stars: no bs staff, food arrived quickly, and food was hot. The food: appetizer was deep fried mushrooms served with ranch. They were solid. Lunch: I had the Lonesome Polecat burger (had fried cheese curd, bacon, cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion) It was very tasty, just a little greasy. I was happy with my choice. Husband had the Princess Minihahaskirt (a fried white fish sandwich), which he said was "good, but didn't have anything to make it pop." Was the food amazing? No. Was it good? Sure. They offer a solid meal that will stick with you all day. Do we need to go back? No. Nothing wowed up enough for a return visit, and there are so many restaurants around Munising I'd rather try instead.

Cup of Veggie hamburger soup.

Stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night in the off season. It was quiet inside. I had a cup of soup (veggie hamburger). I also had the mushroom Swiss burger with crinkle fries and Cole slaw. Everything was middle-of-the-road average. Nothing was great. Nothing was bad. The inside is old-school dark. Casual. There is a bar area. Service was good.

We walked in and were seated immediately at a freshly cleaned table. The two waitress were such a great team. Helping each other, friendly, smiling, and efficient. We ordered the breakfast special- typical-Two eggs, meat, potatoes, and bread. The food came out in no time and was exactly how we wanted things cooked. We recommend this restaurant for a hot delicious breakfast.

What a unique place! Staying in Munising, MI for work and I was looking for somewhere to eat. My hotel had their menu hanging in the elevator, so I thought I'd give it a try. Munising on a weeknight in winter is a bit of a ghost town. I was just happy to find something that was open past 6pm! I have to admit, I was a bit surprised by the name... Dogpatch? Seemed a bit odd for a restaurant that has steak and fish on the menu! I also couldn't understand the theme of the place.... There were these weird, vaguely familiar hillbilly cartoons everywhere. Outside, on the walls, in the menu and behind the bar. I knew I must have been missing something? Of course I had to put Google to work! Turns out Dogpatch was the fictional town that Lil Abner lived in. Still have no idea who or what that is? Nether did I! After researching a but more, Lil Abner was a cartoon strip that started in 1934 and ended in 1977. That's 45 years ago! Can't imagine too many people have any clue what the theme of this restaurant is. Getting past the name and the decor, the food was good and I was very impressed with the service. It wasn't too busy (Monday night) but the two waitresses were both friendly and very attentive. Tonight's special was the Rib Eye that came with a Baked Potato and a Side Salad. The steak looked amazing, but unfortunately it was a bit fatty, it had good flavor but just wasn't a choice cut of meat. Potato was big and done perfectly. Salad was fresh and tasty. Besides a few dinners on the menu, the rest included sandwiches and pizza. The menu also has a kids section. The restaurant is big and clean. It has a bar and a room with a big fireplace, besides the main dinning area. I would imagine that this place gets pretty busy in summer when the boats are running, or on weekends in winter when the snow sportsmen are in the area. Maybe need a reservation? Overall had a good experience at Dogpatch.... And I learned a bit about Lil Abner and all of his hillbilly friends! (Note: Check out Daisy Mae, she has to be the inspiration for Daisy Duke from the Dukes of Hazard). Lol

Soup was very lacking of flavor and chicken was rubbery. Our waitress was good though!

Cheese curds

Stopped here for lunch while on the road. I was not impressed with the menu and almost debated going somewhere else. There wasn't a lot on the menu and nothing sounded very good, but we decided to stay since we were super hungry. We started out with cheese curds, which turned out to be surprisingly good. They were unique compared to other cheese curds. They were square shaped and the batter had a French-toast like sweetness to it. The cheese inside was hot and gooey. We enjoyed them! I got a fried chicken sandwich and fries- I think it's called mammy something on the menu. It was decent. Fries were okay. One of my friends got the chicken tender basket and she said it was good. The other friend got a chefs salad and she liked it. Staff was friendly and attentive. It was a little dark inside the restaurant but they had plenty to look at on the walls. Overall, I'd eat here again but it probably wouldn't be my first choice.

Celebrated my anniversary here and really enjoyed the experience…read more When I made the reservation they asked if I was celebrating anything, so I shared. Was really impressed that there was a congratulations card at our table, signed by the whole staff, plus multiple employees stoped by the table to share too. Nice touch! We sat outside in the screened in pouch overlooking Lake Superior. Really great view and unique experience. Lots of unique drinks on the drink menu, with happy hour offerings. I went with my stand by... Dirty Beefeater Martini. But my wife had something unique... but I couldn't tell you what it was. Service was excellent and our food was great. Six, twelve or individual. Chophouse House Salad (gf) $8.95 Mixed greens, apples, blue cheese, caramelized pecans, champagne apple vinaigrette. Morels were in season, so we were able to add them to the steak and both were delicious. I particularly loved the salt plate the steak was served on. So much flavor!! The salad was good and the oysters were also good. We ordered the pecan praline dessert that I thought was ok. I probably would have liked something else for dessert. I definitely didn't care for the Brussels sprouts. I'd recommend getting some other side dish. I loved being able to look outside from our perch within the restaurant. From that perspective, I thought our table was fantastic. Service there was fine. I'd told the staff that we were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday, and the staff gave him a hand-signed birthday card, which was a nice touch.

First, the service. It was a little slow to get rolling but the gal who helped us out was top-notch. She went above & beyond after my 82yr old father hurt his hand somewhere en route to or from the restroom. He was holding a napkin on it & was embarrassed. She discreetly brought him a bandaid, PUT IT ON & TOOK THE SOILED NAPKIN. Even now, it brings a teat to the eye. She was kind & understanding. To say it was touching would be an understatement. Each couple split a chicken pasty meal, the parents had water, while the hubs & I each added a local beer. The pasty crust was light & flaky. The filling wasn't overly seasoned but had good flavor. The slaw was sweet & solid. The star I would have docked for could be cleaner overall (those displays collect stuff) & faster in service gets a wash from the detail and time well-spent on that service. I'd much rather wait a little longer & leave feeling human. So, maybe we could all slow down a bit & pay more attention to detail.

We are on a family vacation to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This included my daughter in law…read moreand granddaughter visiting the area for the first time in their lives. We wanted to visit Escanaba to see a beach, at Ludington Park, and a view of Lake Michigan, more or less (of the bay). We wanted to find a nice, casual dining place for 5 adults and our five year old. My son looked online and suggested Hereford and Hops. They seemed to have a good variety of food and a location less than a mile from the park. When you walk in the sign asks you to wait to be seated. Our server greeted us and took us to our table. She took the beverage order and made sure the child beverage had a lid to it. The menu has a variety of options, including appetizers, dinner salads, pizza, pasta, and entrees and daily specials. It was Wednesday and the special was a half rack of BBQ ribs and a potato. They had fish and seafood options, and my wife and I chose breaded shrimp. My Daughter in law wanted the BLT with a side of in-house homemade potato chips and a dish of French onion dip. My granddaughter requested the children's burger and fries. All of the entrees came with a choice of garden or Caesar salad. I believe all of the dressing and sauces were made in-house. We also ordered fried cheese curds, with marinara, and potato skins. Once the order was placed, it felt like we were waiting for the appetizers for awhile. One son said, I hope they don't just bring everything at once. But the appetizers did arrive first and they were very good. The salad I ordered was the Caesar. It was chopped Romaine, shredded parmesan, and croutons. Our server said that the croutons were made in-house, and so was my wife's Ranch dressing, so I assume they made the Caesar dressing, too. The point is making items from scratch suggests either unique flavor or fresh quality. The croutons were toasted bread, the size of game dice, with no seasonings I could see or taste. The Caesar dressing lacked the tangy flavor of bottled dressing. My romaine lettuce was chopped okay but some of the ends were a little brown. I was glad I passed on the Chicken Caesar entree salad. My wife said her garden salad and ranch dressing was very good. It had other greens and no romaine. The entrees were all very good. The rib dinners were, reportedly, cooked perfectly. One person felt the sauce was perfect, the other said it tasted great but there was too much of it. My wife and I had breaded shrimp. Again, I assume they made the cocktail sauce in-house. And we both had the same reaction, which was it tasted great but somehow had no coating quality on the shrimp. I dipped mine and it came up looking like it was dripping tomato juice, but tasted great. My Daughter in law loved the BLT, and the taste of the homemade potato chips. She thought they were cut a little thick, but shared with everyone else, who thought they were fine. Everyone raved about the onion dip. We had a great meal, pleasant service, even if it felt a little slow at the start. I suggest you try H &H if you're in the mood for good food, casual atmosphere and reasonable prices.

We ordered the Eh Burger which didn't come with fries, but we ordered separately. The other sandwich was the white fish sandwich, which was one of the better fish sandwiches I have had. The burger was flavorful but a bit greasy, so you might reconsider if grease is not your friend. The fish sandwich was a little unique as it was not a single fish patty but several pieces with some slightly spicy seasoning. Earlier that day we all did our book shopping at Snowbound Books on Third Street, and followed that visit by dining at The Vierling. As other reviewers have noted, the place is busy, and reservations are recommended. And as others have noted, the food is very good. Around our table we had soup (the whitefish chowder (cup, $5.75) came out piping hot - perfect with a dash of black pepper and Tabasco), some salads (gluten free, $5) - I wished someone would order the whitefish bites, but not this time. While all of us had dined at Vierling in the past, this was the first time our group was seated in the space immediately adjacent to the bar, accessed through a walkway. The space includes what looks like a still for beer or spirits, and impressive and imposing sight. We arrived at 5:30 p.m., when the space was empty, so sound levels were good. By 6:30 sound levels went up, probably due to our own conversations as well as those around us. Three of us ordered the locally sourced whitefish (grilled & lightly seasoned, $21); others ordered the grilled salmon ($21), and the beer-battered cod basket ($16.75). Those of us with room left after the entrée shared servings of chocolate peanut butter pie ($6.50, with a crushed Oreo crust, whipped peanut butter filling and fudge ganache top). Service was prompt, friendly, and everyone's order was filled without flaw. We tend to talk a lot, and I think we probably overstayed our reservation when our host explained, at close to 8:30 p.m., that the table had been reserved for another seating that evening. Our host was courteous and diplomatic, and I'm glad she spoke up, as we really did occupy the space for close to three hours on a very busy Friday night. Hope to do it again next time we're all in Marquette, but maybe be a bit more mindful of the length of our stay.
