The menu is heavily centered around deep-fried food, and there weren't really alternatives if you wanted something prepared differently. One rainy evening when we were looking for a restaurant with ample indoor seating we gave it a try. We were so happy to give it a try. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. We stopped at Dog Patch while in the area and unfortunately, the experience was somewhat disappointing. When we arrived, there was a sign asking to wait to be seated, located right next to the men's and women's bathrooms. No one acknowledged us for several minutes, and with people continually passing by us to use the restrooms, we felt in the way. Our waitress was friendly enough, but seemed somewhat distracted throughout our meal. The biggest disappointment was the cheese curds. We're big cheese curd fans, but the portion was surprisingly small, and cost $11.00. The curds were cut into squares, and the texture was not appealing. More importantly, they had such an unpleasant taste that I actually asked if they were feta but was told they were cheddar. They tasted rancid, and none of us could eat them. We asked if they could be taken off the bill, but our waitress told us the next table ate theirs and the manager Joey said no. The rest of our food was reasonably good, but the experience with the cheese curds and how it was handled left a bad impression. We also paid in cash, and our $80 bill was returned with a single $20 bill rather than smaller bills. We had to wait at the bar to get the bill broken so we could leave a tip. At that point, the experience had become frustrating enough that we ended up leaving way less than the 20% tip we normally would. It's hard to understand why the manager wouldn't allow the cheese curds to be returned when none of us could eat them, especially given how small the portion was. It was frustrating to have the situation handled this way when we were simply asking to return something we couldn't eat, and it left us with a poor impression. Overall, there were just too many things that added up to an experience we didn't feel good about, and we likely won't be returning. read more

It is a unique and catchy place that will confuse many because little Abner has not been in the funny pages in 50 years. For those of us that remember or slightly remember little Abner and the whole dog patch clan this will be a trip down memory lane. We almost left due to our kids (we had to wait 20 min to be seated) but that's on us. Glad we stayed. Food came out at a reasonable time frame and everyone was happy. My kids are off and only like Kraft mac and cheese so we're thrilled that's the brand they carried. They also have coke products so for our coke drinkers that was a win too. The food: appetizer was deep fried mushrooms served with ranch. They were solid. Lunch: I had the Lonesome Polecat burger (had fried cheese curd, bacon, cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion) It was very tasty, just a little greasy. I was happy with my choice. Husband had the Princess Minihahaskirt (a fried white fish sandwich), which he said was "good, but didn't have anything to make it pop." Was the food amazing? No. Was it good? Sure. They offer a solid meal that will stick with you all day. Do we need to go back? No. Nothing wowed up enough for a return visit, and there are so many restaurants around Munising I'd rather try instead. read more

First time trying Dogpatch. Let me tell you we were not disappointed. The service was fast and friendly. When we walked in it was decorated kitche cute and I loved the old sawmill in the rafters! All knotty pine and rough hewned log decor with hand painted cartoonish murals all over. It was fun. Then came the food. Wife and son ordered burgers, both looked yummy and they were happy. Daughter and I each got salads and they were good. Prices were about average for the times and decent compared to other local spots. I highly recommend this place. What a unique place! Staying in Munising, MI for work and I was looking for somewhere to eat. My hotel had their menu hanging in the elevator, so I thought I'd give it a try. Seemed a bit odd for a restaurant that has steak and fish on the menu! I also couldn't understand the theme of the place.... There were these weird, vaguely familiar hillbilly cartoons everywhere. Outside, on the walls, in the menu and behind the bar. I knew I must have been missing something? Of course I had to put Google to work! Turns out Dogpatch was the fictional town that Lil Abner lived in. Still have no idea who or what that is? Nether did I! After researching a but more, Lil Abner was a cartoon strip that started in 1934 and ended in 1977. That's 45 years ago! Can't imagine too many people have any clue what the theme of this restaurant is. Getting past the name and the decor, the food was good and I was very impressed with the service. It wasn't too busy (Monday night) but the two waitresses were both friendly and very attentive. Tonight's special was the Rib Eye that came with a Baked Potato and a Side Salad. The steak looked amazing, but unfortunately it was a bit fatty, it had good flavor but just wasn't a choice cut of meat. Potato was big and done perfectly. Salad was fresh and tasty. Besides a few dinners on the menu, the rest included sandwiches and pizza. The menu also has a kids section. The restaurant is big and clean. It has a bar and a room with a big fireplace, besides the main dinning area. I would imagine that this place gets pretty busy in summer when the boats are running, or on weekends in winter when the snow sportsmen are in the area. Maybe need a reservation? Overall had a good experience at Dogpatch.... And I learned a bit about Lil Abner and all of his hillbilly friends! Dogpatch is the only real family Restaurant left in munising, the rest are tourist trap overpriced meals, food trucks, fast food, ect, Dogpatch has changed and there prices have gone up, however they still remain a cozy place with an indoor bar, They do not have buffets anymore, sadly, now a days people want the best, eating french fries with the wife and kids used to be a wonderful treat, there ranch is amazing, there food is good, you may get a burger under-cooked once in awhile, however they will fix it with no complaint. They still do there best to make you comfortable and happy without rushing you out the door, over all it is a nice warm place, expensive, yet normal dine in, They do have lots of wall decor to look at and make you smile. Honestly very pleasantly surprised with this place! We stopped in after a long day of kayaking at Pictured Rocks and we were starving. Once seated, our server took our orders right away and the food was delivered pretty promptly for how busy they were. I ordered the whitefish sandwich (it was called something interesting...I don't remember the goofy name they gave it) and my husband ordered a burger. Both came with a generous side of crispy and piping hot fries. My sandwich was actually really good and my husband enjoyed his burger as well!
