Stopped in for cocktails...first of all, the building was so hot. It was in the 90s that day and they don't have AC. I decided to try the Yooper Gold cocktail which was supposed to have cherry juice and a cherry in it. It definitely had zero cherry flavor whatsoever. It was essentially just whiskey and sour mix. This spot has one of Grand Marais' best views. The coffee, even iced, is good! The breakfast options are yummy. They would do well to allow people to order a muffin or toast or some Oatmeal. Does not need to be a fifteen dollar affair every time you come in. That said, the food truck, if you are lucky it is there that day, has excellent food. The people working here are wonderful, but would like the menu to serve every one. read more

The food was very good. You order up front and then sit at a table and they bring you your food. I had the Tuscan Quesadilla which was very good. The atmosphere is really clean and nice, and they have quite a selection of alcoholic drinks and a small bar. The one drawback for me was the service person taking my order; she had constant RBF, couldn't be bothered to say thank you or anything for that matter... So very rude. read more

Where do I start... Hot...Got here a little after noon one day and the place was like a sauna, you think the staff would have the common sense to open a window or two. Obviously not the brightest bunch. Made this visit uncomfortable at best. Secondly...this place is confused. Like are you a breakfast place, a lunch place, a bar, a gift shop, the decor is confusing at best, And the hours do not compute? Closes at 3pm LIKE WTF? Not sure whats for sale and whats decoration?!! They are trying too hard. I didn't like the fact that they dont have everything in one place too, like through out the restaurant you have things for sale. Again trying too hard, like hey I want to look at these cool dream catchers but don't mind me I am just going to sneak behind these other people and your table while your eating and do it. Put everything in one place. Tacky at best. The food. Way way way too expensive. You're paying close to $60 or more for just two people for a basic meals and drinks, and what sad is the side is like potato chips. I mean COME ON over $20, for a tiny burger and a bowl of potato chips. Stale chips at that!!! I mean not even good chips...give the people an option!!! And you could tell almost everything is just premium pre made stuff for the most part. Microwavable at best. I went here a few times when I was in the area and was disappointed each visit...breakfast gets a star. The staff was ok, but seemed non existent, and you were more of a burden than a customer. I wasn't sure if there were free refills or what but service was sub par. You get your food and your on your own. And when you pay these premium prices I expect service. I don't like paying first before my meal...worst concept ever for a sit-down place like this, this works with chain restaurants, obviously like Taco Bell, or Mcdonalds...but sorry Breakwall you are not that, nor are you fine dining. Again CONFUSED! I get it, it works if you know what your in for food-wise...but for a single outlet...No. Maybe this place should be called..."Broken hole in the wall...Lol. Its actually to nice of a building, but the concepts don't fit here...like really there is no waitstaff? Like here's your food as they scamper out of the kitchen. Bye. Oh...and please don't throw away your tray?!!! HA! They might as well just replace them with robots. Probably on their list. lol The place is deceiving, seems high tech, but you can tell it's a weak attempt to save money, and even thou its a nice building I get the feeling like your standing in line at the HS cafeteria, waiting for square pizza that your definitely going to over pay for. It gets a star for the bathrooms they were cleaner than most in the area I will give it that, and they get a star because the breakfasts were actually descent, with descent helpings but still way way to expensive for eggs!!! Whoever owns this place its obvious they have no clue to what they are doing. Just throwing money at things and seeing what sticks. Hopefully it improves. Better options in this town. A cool waters edge place in a neat town, upstairs shopping and outdoor seating as well, a menu that caters pretty well to all types of eaters, it's the UP so not really vegan helpings but good salad options and an amazing grain bowl! We've been to GM countless times over the years during the winter. There are a couple of great places to go to that have been open for years. All very good. This was a new stop for us. It is our new go to when we visit GM. Great food, friendly staff, clean and great atmosphere. read more

This was such a great little place for lunch! My friend and I originally wanted to come for breakfast because their eggs benedict options looked great but we ended up sleeping in and came later. You order at the front and then there's a buzzer you take with you, and someone brings your food to you. We got the whitefish dip to share which honestly they gave us so much it's definitely a good enough size for 3-4 people to share. I got the Hot Mama burger which has pepper jack cheese, grilled onions & jalepeños and spicy mayo. My friend got the Breakfast Burger. We both looked at each other and literally said this was one of the best burgers we've both ever had. I don't know what they do but we were blown away. They have little picnic benches out in the back you can sit at and enjoy the beautiful view as well. read more

Greetings. When you walk into The Breakwall your welcomed by a down town'ish cabin feeling. There's two levels, on the top most level there's art for sale and other merchandise. Once your welcomed by the cashier your welcomed to take a seat wherever and order whenever you'd like at the cash register. After a 15 minute wait your food arrives, and if your on the top level you can see a miniature elevator bring your food up. The food has a very classic downtown taste and they're pretzel and beer cheese is perfectly balanced and soft. A very good experience. Thank you. read more

It is not often you get to write a first review. The Breakwater opened in June 2022 and we visited in July. The place looks great. Log cabin interior look and feel with a ground floor and loft eating area. You order at the counter and they deliver to your table. My wife had a cheese steak sandwich and I ordered the whitefish sandwich. My wife said the her sandwich was pretty good. Both sandwiches came on the same type of hogie bun and it was super soft and fresh. The fish sandwich seemed to me like it was blackend. This was not in the description, if it had been I would have ordered something else. I am not a fan of blackend anything. But it was light enough that I was okay with it. Both sandwiches came with chips and a pickle. The chips were kettle style and pretty good. Chip flavor options were not a choice. The only down side to our experience was the wait time. We arrived about noon and they weren't very busy. So it wasn't a rush delay. Finally I got up and asked about our meal. I didn't save the receipt for an exact wait time but I drank two glasses of tea while waiting. When our order showed up they apologized for the delay and blamed it on the change over from breakfast to lunch. Not a 5 star place, would have been a good 4 but the wait time earned them the 3. I would go back. Hopefully the wait time was just a fluke. read more

The best breakfast ever! I ate here 4 days in a row on my vacation. I always got the veggie omelette, cheesy grits, and a side of pancakes. The veggie omelette was topped with hollandaise sauce and a big scoop of avocado. The cheesy grits are a MUST try, I'm usually not one to order grits but these were a game changer. They give you an option to pick toast or pancakes as a side, definitely get the pancakes. I'm super impressed, it's definitely not your average boring breakfast restaurant. The food was good but the service was not. I sat at a table full of dirty coffee cups assuming the table would soon be cleared and wiped down, but it never was. Even when the server brought my plate, he didn't notice. I had to clear the table myself. Why this annoyed me so thoroughly I can't even say. Come on guys, step up your game. read more

This was such a wonderful, unexpected stop in Grand Maris! Beautiful wood interior with up north vibe. Order at the counter, have a seat and a great meal is delivered! Breakfast is served until 11:30 when lunch service starts. We saw the end of breakfast service and boy, did the eggs Benedict look great. I had the summer Reuben (turkey) and my husband had a Maurice salad that he said rivals mine The staff were all so pleasant, as was the owner who stopped and chatted. Food was delicious and the staff was very friendly! Food came out super quick and filled us all up! It was different how you placed your order at the counter then sat down, walked over and got our own drinks and silverware. We didn't mind, thought it was kind of cool. The prices definitely were higher than we paid all weekend but we sort of expected it when it is the only breakfast place in town . Our bill was $95.00 for 5 people, definitely more than I wanted to pay. read more

Drove into town looking for breakfast & saw all the cars around this location. Went inside to an adorable venue with a bar, tables & gift shop. Orders are placed from the menu board on the wall with the help of a cashier. Pay for your meal, obtain a disc to place on a table receiver & your food is delivered to you. An area is designated for drinks, silverware & condiments as a self-serve station. Drinks can be served with mug or to-go cup for convenience. I had blueberry pancakes with bacon & its was top notch. Many servers check on you & chat to add to the welcoming atmosphere. What a great way to begin your day & was very pleased. Sat by the window overlooking the bay & was so impressed with the efficiency! Will return for sure when in the area. read more

Absolutely terrific. Hoagies have nice soft buns, burgers juicy and cooked properly to order. Get the giant pretzel, it hits the spot as an appetizer. Staff is friendly as heck, too. And they have peach iced tea, brewed and not from the fountain. Great place to eat. read more
