A fountain in the middle of the eating area sounded beautiful mingled with the sound of bird sing in the partially open roof. We were greeted by a friendly young woman behind the high window of the cart. Both my companion and I ordered halibut fish and chips. We are glad we did! I consider myself a fish and chips connoisseur and these were some of the best I've had. The halibut was flaky and perfectly cooked. The batter was light and flavorful and properly greasy. The French fries were also incredible--crispy and perfect. Both the fish and the chips were steaming hot when they were delivered to our table. The servings were generous. My cousin ordered the Oklahoma Double Smashburger, and I ordered the Bacon Black and Blue. I thought I had ordered a double, and she thought she had ordered a single, so we ended up moving one patty from her burger to mine. I was really, really hungry. I devoured my burger and fries. I was a little disappointed that fries were the only potential side (all burgers automatically come with fries), but, given how much trouble the staff had keeping orders straight, maybe they don't need to be adding menu items. The Oklahoma was the first decent Oklahoma smashburger I've found anywhere. Both of our burgers were true smashburgers, with caramelized patties. My cousin's had a lot of mustard and onions, while mine had bacon and blue cheese. I didn't love the amount of bacon and blue cheese. It's not my new favorite blue cheese burger of all time-- a spot still held by Gott's in California. But it was really, really good. The smashburger had really good flavor, but was on the lighter side as far as smashburger patties go. The cart was in a little food cart plaza with about ten carts surrounding a beer tap hall. The vibes were slightly more classy, beach like, and romantic as opposed to other food cart malls. Games range from 1-4 tokens to play, so you can definitely get your money's worth! In the back, there's also a retro-looking "living room" area where you can rent game consoles by the hour. And there's a shelf of board games you can play at the tables. We had so much fun, we didn't realize we closed the place down! I felt bad when I saw that we stayed past closing time, but that's just how fun Gizmo's is. A fun, all-ages option for your Astoria evening!
