My dog. Where to begin with that furry monster. Dog food aside, the one thing that I spend the most on with my dog is leashes. The little goober chews through them like he's eating an apple or something. Finally after he chewed through a leash that I had purchased only two hours before, I threw my hands up and gave in and went to a pet store that would be able to help me solve my problem. The gentleman at the counter was extremely helpful and talked to me for a while about what the problem was and how it could be solved (Zed chews through leashes when I tie him up outside the grocery store to run errands, so I'm not there to correct the behavior). Finally, we agreed that a chain leash is pretty much the only option. And after looking at leashes for a while, I realized he was selling me one of the cheapest leashes in the place because that's what my dog needed. He wasn't out to make a buck, he genuinely wanted me to get the right product for my dog. It's not just for rhinestones. The first time I walked in I was a little overwhelmed: it's not a huge store, and there's a lot to take in. Yes, there are funny and clever novelty items for people who love dogs (and for people who love people who love dogs). But a closer look reveals some really thoughtful selections that are -- well, dog savvy. Yes, some of it is pricey. But I bought a harness there that has lasted where others have fallen apart; and I paid just a little more for a tag and collar that my collar-hating dog loves, and the tag doesn't scratch. Plus great cards and gifts, treats, and more -- chosen with both humor and insight. Also? Dog Savvy offers grooming. There are only three groomers in Denver where my dogs seem comfortable (the other two are Urban Dogg and Oona's), and Dog Savvy has been wonderful. The dogs come out happy, clean, groomed to my specifications but not perfumey. (I had a horrible experience with two other groomers -- one of them rhymes with Getsart -- as in, my dogs freaked out if we even went near those places, started whimpering and hiding. So I'm really careful now. The price difference wasn't huge, especially after The Chain added in their weird charges for weird things.) Note: If you're not in the walk-up area, parking can be a hassle. I try to schedule grooming appointments on Sundays, when downtown parking is free -- but last time, nearby construction took all the available street parking anyway and I drove around for an embarrassingly long time. Apparently they will validate your parking in the lot off 16th and Market; and I hear that they will be happy to simply gather your furbaby while you stop in front of the store, to save you the hassle of parking just for drop-off. So it's worth calling ahead. read more

I made an appointment for a dog grooming a week an a half in advance. When I dropped off my dog they told me it would take about 2 to 2.5 hours. Seemed like a long time for an appointment, but okay. I came back two and a half hours later and they told me it would be another thirty minutes. Okay. I came again another thirty minutes later 3.5 hours and they told me they were bringing out my dog. I waited inside for ANOTHER thirty minutes and they finally brought out my dog. FOUR hours after I dropped off my dog, they brought her out practically 3/4s done. Her legs were not trimmed all the way... Terrible experience! Also the cost of grooming was $60... more than dog groomers I've had in the past. The place is like 1/2 pet accessories shop 1/2 grooming place. The dogs get groomed somewhere downstairs, so I don't know how dedicated they are to actually grooming dogs... read more

LOVE the shop... We have been taking our dog ever since we moved Downtown Denver and have alway been given personal service. They know our pup and are always willing to work with our schedule. This is not your typical pet store, not a big box store... and from its location you will know that. This is a mom & pop shop so expect to pay high prices. My dog (mini American Eskimo) has been going here for his grooming needs for about 6 months and he goes once a month. They do such a great job! Eskimos have a double coat and can get matted easily and every time I pick up my dog he looks amazing! Not a snarl in his hair. He smells great and they are very reasonable as well. It usually costs me between $40-$50 and this includes bath, brush, nails, trim, furminator which to me is well worth the price for the great job they do! the owners are also very friendly which makes for an inviting entrance. read more

Thank god we found Dog Savvy. Not only do my wife and I LOVE this place, Frisco our standard poodle does as well. The people here are truly great. We have taken Frisco to a couple of other groomers and he never really bonded with the people or even liked going to have his hair cut. It was always a struggle. Then we took him to Dog Savvy and the difference was night and day. He really loves his Groomer Alliya. She is so great with him. And she always does a great job with him. ( even when his hair is really matted. Sorry about that Alliya.). I would recommend her to anyone who has a poodle or a dog. I brought my dog here for the ultimate spa experience, and boy did they deliver. I made an appointment and about 1.5 hours later she was done and looking/ smelling great. The staff was all so friendly and she absolutely loved the post-groom treats they were feeding her :) The prices were absolutely reasonable for the services and treatment. She even left with a cute halloween bow! I haven't purchased anything else other than the spa treatment here, but their selection of collars, leashes, and any other accessories is pretty incredible. I could really spoil my pup here! I will definitely be taking her back again when she is ready for another spa day! read more

I think most people are rating the store, which I found to be over priced and just OK. I recently moved to Denver and have been in search of a groomer. I'm still looking. Dog Savvy has grooming services and pretty good hours and appointments available on the weekends. I was a little hesitant when they told me the appointment would be for an hour or two. I have a large dog with long fur and its should never take just 1-2 hours. If it only takes that long, I know they aren't doing a thorough job. When I brought her in there were ad-on's for things like clipping toe nails, and fur-minator. They informed me they don't use scissors, which I thought was odd. Granted, she doesn't need a full clip, but she gets long hair between her toes that need to be clipped. I waited 3-4 hours for a phone call that I never received. When I called them to check on her, they told me she was done and they had called. I'm not sure who's mistake, but I don't like having my dog wait in a crate at the groomer longer than she needs too. The job they did was ok, for being an expensive bath rather than a groom. The price was reasonable, but only considering they washed and dried her, and didn't spend the time to remove all the loose fur. For large dogs, or dog who require more than a bath, try a different groomer. As for the store, they don't have that great of a dog food selection or of a bone/raw hide selection. They do have a great collar/leash, dog beds, dog clothes, gifts, and costume selection. Go there if you're looking for a cute store for gifts, but not everyday stocking up on dog good store. read more

Found my (and Apollo's) new favorite pet store! After planning a last minute camping trip in the mountains, we realized our poor pup doesn't have a jacket for the cold night time weather. After seeing other reviews, we decided to give this place a try and couldn't be happier we did! The man working not only helped us pick out a jacket our 5 month old pup would grow into, but also sized him properly and adjusted a new harness for us. I took my dog to get her nails trimmed today! Usually it's kind of over priced, and they end up being kind of long still, and melody hates her paws being touched. so I tried here today! This spot requested a treat for my new born puppy of 8 weeks, the treats were 30 dollars... more like 600 little did I know the FDA warned consumers about this product in 2007 about the harmful affects on dogs. I had to take my puppy to a emergency vet at 12:30 at night and ended up leaving at 3:30 am 600 dollars later. Let me remind you again this treat was suggest by a employee! This is my wife's kind of place.... I always have to go in to a pet boutique when we pass one by, although you really don't have to twist my arm. Their appt was with Oddie she was very pleasant and attentive to my like and dislikes of cuts as well as making sure my boys were comfortable before taking them back. I found this place after having brunch nearby and not sure why it took me so long to shop there. They have an amazing selection of collars and leads, very unique designs (my dog needs a collar and leash with piggies on it). They have a huge assortment of dog and cat treats, clothing galore, and great pet accessories I didn't even know I needed. (Scored a "peace keeper" to put on the collar and tuck tags into for a quieter pup). They also do grooming but I haven't used those services. They have been around for over a decade so I'm sure their grooming services are as good as their retail. read more

I came to know Robb, the owner, through a very scary and unfortunate set of events. While I have never been to his shop, as I don't live in the area, I believe my experience with him matters just as much if you care about doing business with the right people. My dog became very ill on July 4th weekend and he was rushed to the ER where he was diagnosed with a deadly illness. Three days later, the vet suggested we euthanize our dog. I was not ready to give up! I scoured the web for recommended products that could possibly help, and found Robb's name on a review for a particular product. I reached out to him for advice, and found a compassionate, helpful, caring person that really helped me get through the worst week and a half of my dog-owning life. He was not only empathetic to my position, but so very genuine in his concern and willingness to pass on his knowledge and experience. I wholeheartedly recommend ANYTHING Robb offers. Dog Savvy truly is as good as it gets. If I lived closer, I would probably spend way too much time (and money) at this adorable doggie boutique. Let me emphasize the words - doggie boutique. This is not - and was never meant to be - akin to Petsmart. As a professional in the pet industry, and as a supporter of brick and mortar stores in general, the comments made about prices, not having a huge selection of dog food, and so forth frustrate me to no end. I hear the same comments regarding comic book shops. Fortunately for Dog Savvy, the pet industry is booming despite the economic market's troubles, and dog-centric boutiques, especially those that pull it off as perfectly as Dog Savvy does, are in high demand. Believe it or not, people DO pay good money for Swarovski crystal dotted collars for Foofie, and while I stick to the less flashy harnesses for my pups, I'm happy to shell out a few extra bucks to keep a small brick and mortar business alive. The experience of shopping at Dog Savvy is part of the FUN. What fun is ordering online? I remember the first time that I spotted Dog Savvy from the road. This place is adorable from the outside in ,and I knew I had to visit. I had no idea that this store is also owned by the same people who run For the Love of Dog. I've already reviewed it, but the knowledge that it was run by the same people made Dog Savvy that much better. This is THE place to spoil your babies, hands down. I always look forward to visiting, with or without my pups, and I never walk away empty-handed. Dog Savvy is a really cute little shop I stumbled upon during a "killing time" session recently. They have all sorts of doggie toys (balls, chewy things, soft stuffed toys, etc) from higher end brands as well as some less expensive brands. They also have lots of doggie clothing & outerwear. Their treat selection isn't HUGE, but what they do have seems to be high quality and full of natural ingredients. They stock lots of doggie accessories like those super cute dog bowls made in Italy. I ended up buying a cookie for my pooch, and she's super happy! I could see myself spending lots of money in there... And the next time I come I'm definitely bringing my dog with me! read more

Our dog had spent a week at "camp" in Breckenridge and while he absolutely loved his experience there, he was a dirty little guy by the end of the week. We stopped in Denver for brunch before our flight back home and while we were waiting for our food, I decided to use Yelp to see if there was a self-service dog wash nearby. Being a yorkie is cool, I'm the first to admit that. This place is even cooler, if that is possible. I got bling'd out in a crystal collar - red, of course! Then I got a buddy belt, which just happens to be an amazing harness that my daddy can walk me with so I don't hurt my trachea. Then it was to my favorite part, treats!!! I got 2 flossies, grain-free training treats (as if I need any training, humph) and a bone that will probably last me a life time. I like going to Dog Savvy and being spoiled.
