Great experience and food! I ordered the petite filet and my husband had the ribeye. Tender like butter, so juicy and flavorful! They were amazing even microwaved the next day! They boil the potatoes in crawfish boil-genius! The sautéed mushrooms were awesome-my husband wanted to drink the gravy lol. But, the creamed spinach was the very best! So cheesy and creamy and flavorful!!! We each had Crown Royal highballs which had generous amounts of Crown. The drop biscuits were ok-a little over cooked, almost burned, but when you let the butter melt and let honey soak in, they were good. The restaurant was super busy as it was a Saturday night, but our waitress, Jamie, was great-super friendly, attentive and fast! The whole staff helped each other and were all friendly. Another lunch visit great food and Service. We both got the chicken fried steak with French fries. They don't use the usual style of meat they use some type of steak. It was good but instead of using the white gravy I asked for A1 lol sounds weird but it was appropriate. My mom insisted this is how chicken fried steak was made in the ole days. The place is empty on a Monday before six or seven! I know we should've ordered steak but it was pricey enough for the four of us to just get shrimp. I tasted the angry shrimp (spicy and sweet) and ordered the broiled shrimp (not good. Its like another dish called barbecue shrimp, swimming in sauce,but it wasn't flavorful.) I went here for the first time yesterday with some co-workers who speak highly of Doe's. We walked in at lunch time and were quickly seated. The table was clean, the restaurant was tidy, and the environment was cozy and not super loud. I ordered the debris po boy because... I mean... Does that need explanation? Anyway! Wow this place blew my mind for lots of reasons. First of all, the restaurant seemed like a casual and unpretentious environment. That assumption proved correct when we were seated at the bar and I heard Chef George say, "what's up hooker?" to a regular customer. While we waited at the bar for the rest of our party to arrive we had a great time talking to the bartender. The bartender was outgoing and personable. We enjoyed our beers at the bar and even got some freshly baked cookies from the chef. What other restaurant will you see the chef walking around with a tray of gluten free cookies?? So I was thoroughly thrilled even before we got to the star of the show. Once everyone arrived we sat down at a nearby table. Our server approached us in a timely manner and she greeted us warmly. She was training someone else during her shift which we didn't mind at all. We loved having the extra attention and service lol. Chef George sat down at our table and talked to us for quite a bit before we ordered. He made some recommendations to us and he even suggested some fish entree to someone at our table. I don't know. I wasn't paying much attention at this point as I was steadfast in my decision to eat meat!! Orders in. Waiting commenced. Once our servers starting making their way to our tables I knew we were in for a treat. You could see from a distance that these plates were no joke. Once the plates were in front of us we were all in awe. None of us have ever seen such massive steaks in our lives. These steaks were 2 lb behemoths (just look at the pics). I ordered the porterhouse and our friends ordered the ribeye. All of us loved our steaks!! The steaks were cooked just right and full of flavor. For the prices on the menu, I was expecting a high end dinner experience. We walk in, and servers are wearing LSU t shirts and cut off Jean shorts. We ordered a dozen tamales for the table, and thats where we should have paid and left . I ordered the tuna steak and boyfriend ordered A steak medium. Another friend ordered the 9oz filet and his girlfriend ordered shrimp. My tuna was dry and tough. His steak was raw as can be. $38 an oz. We asked to fire up the steak again. It came back chewy. $200 later, We boxed up his steak to bring home to the dog. There are better steaks elsewhere. The shrimp wasn't memorable. The filet, we cook better at home. Doe's is my kind of place. If you want a good steak in a relaxed, casual atmosphere, look no further than Doe's. Baton Rouge has numerous options when searching for a steakhouse. Many appear to be fancy, but on my most recent trip I wanted something a bit more casual. After scouring Yelp, I stumbled upon Doe's. Doe's does what many other places can't. They offer top quality steaks cooked to perfection without all of the pretentiousness that some places seem to embrace. The first thing I found that I liked about Doe's was that they use Open Table. Making a last minute reservation was very easy. I wish more restaurants would embrace that system. The next thing I saw that I liked was the restaurant itself. It had a very down home, casual feel. Everyone was incredibly friendly and I got the feeling that many of the customers were regulars. One group of tables near mine were apparently old friends from Mississippi and somehow knew the owners. It was nice hearing them talk and seeing how friendly and open the owner was. Our server was great. Even though she was young, she did a great job and was very attentive. Doe's cuts all of their steaks in house and sells them by the pound. The smallest steak on the menu was an 8oz. fillet, and the largest was a 3.5 pound porterhouse. Prices varied, but my ribeye was $23 per pound. I love porterhouses, but the idea of a 2 pound bone in ribeye was just too great to pass up. Sure it was $46, but if I had ordered that steak at a high end joint, it would have been double the price. It was cooked a perfect medium rare which was really impressive considering the thickness of the steak. As for flavor, it was that perfect beefy flavor you get from aging beef. I do wish it had been more heavily seasoned, but with the addition of salt and pepper at the table, it was a very good piece of cow. Another great thing about Doe's is their beer selection and price. There were several Louisiana craft varieties and they were incredibly priced. My Hopitoulas was only $4 which is several dollars cheaper than most bars in New Orleans. I wish more people would follow their pricing structure. I really like Doe's. If you want a damn good steak in a laid back atmosphere, come here as soon as humanly possible. read more

I've been to Doe's in Paducha, KY a few times while there for business and enjoyed the experience. I was happy to see there was a location in Baton Rouge when we relocated here in Mid 2015. Although Doe's is a steak house, my favorite dishes were the tamales and spaghetti on my visits in KY. We decided to visit Doe's in BR during restaurant week. I went in fully intending to eat off of the Restaurant Week menu. But when I got the full menu and saw the tamales, I could not resist. I was sad not to see spaghetti on the menu, looking to pair two old favorites, so I just ordered a dozen tamales with a side salad. The tamales came out wrapped in paper, piping hot with a cup of chili, the same way they are served up North. And they did not disappoint me. Corn masa with a meaty pork filling. The chili is like whipped cream on top for me. Its not essential for the dish, but oh it is so good! I have to say, the food at this franchise location is just as good as the family owned location in KY. I did sample BF's steak during our visit in BR, and it was really good. I got the fried asparagus with crabmeat and a half dozen tamales. The tamales are the best I've ever tasted. I'm not a tamale expert but I've eaten plenty. These are fantastic. Get them and enjoy. They also come with a small bowl of chili which is also tasty. The fried asparagus was good as well. The marinated salad that comes with the steaks was light and tasty to start the meal. THE BISCUITS. They are more like savory beignets. But holy crap I was not expecting these little balls of fried soft dough that melt in your mouth. So good. (I love bread though.) The owners are frequently visiting the tables, making sure you're happy. Most recently, we celebrated a dear friend's birthday here. We were able to get a reservation for 10 on a snowy Friday night, and the table was ready early. We were in the bar area with ample TVs at all angles to catch some good games. We were given the right amount of time to socialize and order. Of course, the tamales are a must, but you can't go wrong with any starter. The accompanying chili is just delicious. I ordered the petit filet, and it was cooked to perfection - medium rare, melt in your mouth kind of meat. I got the fries with it, cooked in duck fat, just cannot go wrong. Any of the sides or add ons are amazing. The eclair for dessert is another winner. My friends ordered the porterhouse steak to split, and the chefs were able to cook the different parts at different temperatures. That was huge for them! I like the casual, laid back atmosphere. It's not a fancy steakhouse if that's what you're expecting, although it's a great date night place. The steaks are 2-2.5lbs each, so unless if getting a filet definitely enough to share. I have been in where they have smaller cuts, but I wouldn't expect it. Service was very good, attentive and quick to bring drinks and steak didn't take very long neither. My fiancée and I split the 2lb ribeye with fries. Drop biscuits and salad also comes with the steak. The steak was cooked perfectly med-rare as ordered. It was very good and flavorful, we really enjoyed it. The only negative I'll say on the steak is there isn't much crust. The fries are house cut fries and very good, especially once they soak up that steak juice. I don't get it, Baton Rouge... 150 reviews and four stars on Yelp. Multiple glowing reviews on Google... 1) The steaks are over priced (over $30 some dollars a pound) for the level of quality received. The rib eye was bland in one bite and over seasoned and salty in another bite. 2) The vegetables served with the ribeye (after a up charge for substitution) were seasoned like when you drink water from the tap... and the tap water isn't clean enough to drink straight from the tap. 3) A tamale is defined as "a Mexican dish of seasoned meat wrapped in cornmeal dough and steamed or baked in corn husks." Being from the neighboring state to the left of Louisiana, that's what I expect. I do not expect parchment paper, sad tasteless ground meat, or watery chili to eat said "tamale" with. I'd forgive all the above if it had flavor. But nope. Bottom line: a tamale should be able to stand alone. 4) Avoid the house salad with house dressing at all costs. It's a waste of their time and your money. It's what I imagine Golden Corral serves. Mickey D's has better salads than here. I threw up this dinner as soon as I got home. Sorry, Baton Rouge... you missed the mark on this one. Head to Fleming's, Sullivan's, or even J Alexander if you're needing to get a steak fix. Or drive to NOLA and eat at Houston's. Wow, what a disappointment. I have been wanting to try this place for years and finally went for Restaurant Week, eager to get a wide sampling of their menu. Unfortunately it fell short of my expectations. First I will highlight what I enjoyed, then touch on why I left disappointed. First, the Beer Cheese Soup is to die for. It is like a warm hug going down, and instantly set the mood for the rest of the meal. Next, I really enjoyed the bread they serve. They are like little hybrids of hush puppies and beignets - very delicious and unique! Lastly, their Eclair Cake dessert was heavenly. So much flavor but it was so light and fluffy - the perfect dessert after a heavy steak dinner. The reason I gave two stars is because of the huge let downs : the steak and the service. At a professional, higher-end steakhouse like Does, I would expect the meat to be cooked to perfection - or at least cooked to order. My entire table's meat was undercooked and my husband had to send his back. After a few bites of my raw meat, I lost my appetite and figured I would just take it home and cook it myself - which I did. After throwing it in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes, it has a perfect pink-red center. Aside from the cook of the meat it was laden with fat. Now a little fat is delicious, but this was unacceptable. I have attached a picture for reference. It was a mountain of fat that had not been rendered properly and was utterly unappetizing. On to the service, our waitress was nice but very busy. We all come from the service industry, so we know what it is like to be in the weeds. But it was obvious she was ignoring our table: we were situated in between a 8-top and a 6-top, and she would run back and forth between those two tables passing us over time and time again. Our wine glasses and water glasses sat empty for 10-15 minutes before we verbally had to stop her and ask for refills. The 6-stop that sat down after us actually left before us, proving that they took priority. Overall, for the higher-priced Does Eat Place, I would rather go to a nicer establishment that can cook and flavor their meat (there was no salt/seasoning/flavor what-so-ever) with superb service such as 18 Steak or Ruth Chris. Sure, there are other choices on the menu, but if you go to Doe's and don't order a steak you should probably get your head examined. It's in what looks like it used to be an old house and it's super casual complete with sweet waitresses who seem to know everyone's name and checkered tablecloths. It seems like it's a huge local favorite. On to the steak. Yum. I had the filet mignon and it was tender and juicy. It did need salt and pepper, but I didn't mind adding that myself.
