When we purchased our now 100-year-old home 8 years ago, the family from whom we bought it had a contract with Dodson, so we decided since they were familiar with the house, we'd continue using them. At the time, they pointed out inactive termite damage but that was the only thing they've mentioned in the ensuing years. Fast forward to last week when, after merely shining a flashlight around the crawlspace, we were told that we have an active powder post beetle infestation and would need to have the house tented and fumigated (we would have to vacate with our cat for several days) to the tune of $8,000. We contacted Exterminating Unlimited for a second opinion. They came out today and did an incredibly thorough job and discovered that the powder post beetle damage is decades old and inactive, having been successfully treated long ago. Save yourself the headache of shoddy inspections, over-zealous salesmen, and the worry of spending thousands of dollars needlessly by getting a second opinion. Better yet, just don't use Dodson at all. They may have good service elsewhere in the state of Virginia, but not here. We will be using Exterminating Unlimited from now on. If EU is good enough for Maymont and The Byrd Theatre, they're good enough for us. read more
