Recently my wife washed our key fob through the laundry destroying the circuit board in the fob making the minivan go crazy beeping, not starting, doors opening, etc. They ordered and reprogrammed the key for our van. We had a flat tire on our car and instead of ordering all new tires they actually repaired the damaged tire at a fraction of the cost. I had a complete overhaul of my 2009 Toyota Venza done by them two years ago because it was stalling out and bad things were starting to happen. I was kind of nervous to have all that work done because the car is up there in miles at 150k+. The Venza has run like a top ever since and I think about all the money they saved me as a result. The car still runs great and I've had to just do basic maintenance ever since. I don't usually write many reviews but these guys definitely deserve it. Overall if you take your car, truck or van there, you'll thank me. The place is clean, the owner John is super friendly, they know what they're talking about and not once have I ever felt like they tried to sell me on something I didn't need, which has not been my experience at many of the other shops. Here's the really concise breakdown of my recent repair experience with Mike and his business. I bring in my car for an oil change, my car is ailing, but I ask Mike to help me locate an exhaust leak towards the engine. (Me)This will fix it. -Drivers Side Manifold I ask for a quote and receive one after the part was looked up. Leave my car. Not too long after I reach out to Mike and share with him a few of the symptoms the car was showing me that I hoped the repair would remedy. Mike carefully explains how in fact this would not solve my issue. As we talked further and I tell him a few other thing I've noticed with the car, I was then thoughtfully walked through some frank realities of what I would most likely be encountering on my return on investment, this from an experienced mechanic/savvy businessman's perspective. I'm fully convinced, I'll take back the car as is. I ask how much do I owe, not only did he not accept any amount, nor a tip, but he offered me clean insight as to why this is only way he would conduct this type of transaction. The several hundred dollars saved is really the side point. He was very honest and up front about the cost of work, and which fixes were worth doing, and which were not worth the money (i.e. the cost of fixing very minor leaks in a 43 year old car). With service like this, I guess word of mouth is doing some heavy lifting! Welcome to my experience with Grumpy's Automotive Center, DBA Lowell Automotive Center. Back in February, they installed generic clamps on a hose, which I believe were overtightened. Several months later, the T-fitting cracked right where that clamp was installed. Coincidence? Maybe. But I believe the original workmanship deserves a serious look. I asked them to address the problem. Instead, the car was returned without the issue being resolved because, apparently, I hadn't explained it clearly enough. Enter Scott, aka Mr. Grumpy Britches. Scott repeatedly interrupted me with, "I can't tell you anything without the car here." SO I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK! Then I called to explain the issue again, only to be interrupted and told, "Well, I just walked in the door at 8." Seriously? If you open at 8, shouldn't you be ready to deal with customers at 8? Just a thought! Now comes the kicker: I was expected to pay to repair a problem I believe was related to their previous work. When I returned to discuss it, the conversation became argumentative, ending with, "We'll just talk face to face." Excuse me? What exactly is THAT supposed to mean? Maybe it was innocent, but it's a lousy way to handle a customer trying to resolve a dispute. I've always found Steve to be a nice guy, but my experience with Scott has seriously changed my opinion of this business. THE UPDATE, FOLKS! We picked up the car, and, SURPRISE, we were charged to repair the part I believe was damaged by the earlier work. Then my wife was challenged about this post and told I'd been given the price beforehand. I WAS NOT GIVEN A PRICE BY SCOTT. That's my recollection, and I'm standing by it. But wait, there's MORE! They also challenged my wife about how much she drives the car. I said she barely drives it, and they apparently disagreed based on the mileage. Let's do some math, Mr. Grumpy Britches! YOU said approximately 5,000 miles in eight months. That's 625 miles per month, or 7,500 miles per year. Sounds like relatively low mileage to me! If mileage explains why a part failed, then explain the mechanical reason. Show the evidence. That's what I'd expect from a professional mechanic. But challenging my wife over my comment about mileage? WHAT DOES THAT ACCOMPLISH? She was there to pick up a car, not participate in an argument over a review. HERE'S MY FREE BUSINESS ADVICE: You don't like the review? EARN A BETTER ONE! You disagree? Explain yourself professionally. Show the customer what happened. Stand behind your work if it's justified, and work toward a reasonable resolution. That's how you build trust, earn repeat business, and generate positive word of mouth.
