They must have seen the desperation on my face because Scott, the owner, was incredibly kind right away.

I took my truck to Bartels for an oil change, and was told my serpentine belt was about to fail. Imminently. They sent me a video (as if I know what a good serpentine belt looks like) and made a big show of how I would not want that to fail in this weather... I'd be stranded... couldn't run the heat, etc. It sounded very grim. Because I've been "little lady-ed" (IYKYK) before, I took it to Last Chance. They did a thorough inspection and said that my serpentine belt showed no cracks, wasn't slipping, wasn't making any weird noises and basically, was fully operational. When it does eventually need replacing, you can bet I will take it to Ron and the team at Last Chance and I won't be returning to Bartels. Ever.

I have a 82 Sedan DeVille that had an engine rebuild 2 years ago (different shop, now out of business). I needed more engine work an found Last Chance online. I was on the waiting "list" for 3 months. When Ron finally agreed to take the car in, he stated that it was probably going to need a new engine without ever seeing or listening to the car. When he asked my name, he said he knew someone with a similar sounding name who was Jewish, and asked if I was Jewish. I said yes. The more I thought about how he prejudged the car and how he prejudged me for being Jewish, I decided I didn't was Ron touching the Jew's Cadillac and canceled the pickup.

Dishonest business! I had a very unpleasant experience with them today. I spoke to 2 different…read moreperson in 2 different days. They both confirmed their diagnosis is free of charge and I do NOT have to get the repair done. I drove to them with check engine light on and when I came to their office, they said diagnosis is $99. Then he said if one of us told you its for free, then we won't charge you for it. They said they can diagnose today and repair tomorrow, I have to drop off the car. I only wanted to get diagnosis done today and come for repair another day. They refused! They said I have to get repair done with them if they diagnose it. They refused to do diagnosis alone. I offered to pay for diagnosis but they refused that as well. I was forced to get the repair done with them. All the other mechanics say they charge for diagnosis but if i get it repaired with them, it goes towards the repair, very transparent. They could have just said that. However this business, tricked me into the same thing by pulling me in, promising free diagnostic. My time is valuable, I didn't appreciate they are being shady and wasting my time. Don't recommend this place to anyone!

I provided the fault code (P0750) along with background on what had already been done to the vehicle, and asked them to review the problem and provide a quote to replace the shift solenoid. The following day, I received a call with their "diagnosis," which was surprising and disappointing. They stated that based on the code, dirty transmission fluid, the solenoid supposedly being internal to the transmission (it is actually external), and what they believed to be 180,000 miles on the vehicle, they recommended replacing the entire transmission. In reality, the vehicle currently has under 153,000 miles. They quoted approximately $5,000 for a transmission replacement, which I declined. I completed the repair myself shortly after. The shift solenoid was accessible through a side pan in the engine bay, and the job took only a few hours. I also performed a fluid change since it was due. The vehicle is now shifting smoothly and operating normally, confirming that a full transmission replacement was unnecessary. I will say the manager/owner was friendly during our initial conversation and did not seem dismissive. However, the information provided during the estimate was inaccurate and ultimately led me to feel that either the shop was pursuing a high-dollar repair or simply did not want to take on the actual job. If the work was outside their technicians' scope, I would have preferred they say that directly. I wish them well as they grow their business, but based on this experience, I will not be returning.
