Cheap but quality bbq in a great location. They offer a big selection of meats, sides, slaw, and desserts at a real bargain. Their pulled pork is fabulous and you'd be crazy not to try the slaw flight. Personal Recommendation: 2 meat combo with mac n cheese and collard greens. We ate at the food truck at Highland Brewing on a Thursday night. Diana was incredibly friendly and gave me a sample of the pork and vinegar slaw, since this was our first time trying their food. Pork was "pulled" to order and super moist, not dried out like it's been sitting around forever, like some other BBQ places, so that was impressive. The vinegar slaw was interesting, sweet, but tangy. I love vinegar and like the bite I get from it, so this was a little on the sweeter side for me, but it definitely grew on me. My friend, who is a Southern Lady and makes amazing food of her own, was super impressed with the sweet potato casserole. She told us the food truck is at Highland Brewing every Thursday, I'm looking forward to going again! We will definitely be back, and you should definitely go there. Looking from the outside, you're not expecting to get anything but some good ole southern BBQ. We were quite surprised when we came in and approached to order. The staff are the most polite and genuinely nice people! We kept talking about it even after we left! The music was moderately decent. It is decorated nicely without having too much going on or being out of character of who they are. Nice and simple. The prices are very reasonable and portion sizes are large. The sweet tea is sweet but not "rot your teeth out" sweet. Okay, let's talk about the food. He had the pulled pork with fried cabbage and bourbon apple sauce. I had the smoked turkey with collard greens and baked beans. Both come with a side of cornbread. The pulled pork was great! Fried cabbage is also really great! How fun that a restaurant can entice consumers to eat cabbage! The apple sauce was very good, a little sweet for me, but he felt it balanced nicely with the dish and you could actually taste the bourbon. The turkey was juicy and very delicious, couldn't have been happier with it. The baked beans seemed to be made from scratch with a few different bean types and a nice bite to them. I really enjoyed them. The collards however, made me a little sad. They were good but they aren't anything to write home about. I feel maybe they are making them vegan-friendly? All and all though, we will definitely be back and this will be the place we go when we are in the area again. read more

All the barbecue here is on point and solid. Most barbecue places try for too many meats and are all mediocre, but out of ribs turkey pulled pork and pulled beef I was impressed by all of them. Highly recommend the beef as you get a huge amount for what you pay. Only deducting one point because the sides aren't super fantastic, and the food and beer are very slightly overpriced for the area. read more

Doc Brown's is a nice little gem with great food and friendly staff. I usually order a pulled pork sandwich because it pairs best with their mustard sauce. It's the best mustard sauce in Asheville, in my opinion. I love the flavor of the collards, as it has a sweetness to it, when most places are salty or greasy and just taste like stewed pork. I love the mac and cheese pie, it's the closest to my own family's recipe as any restaurant. Speaking of pie, the peanut butter pie is on point! The only downside to this place is they run out of stuff sometimes, so it's better to go earlier in the day. They close at 8pm, so we try to not walk in there after 7pm. read more

This place is the best!!! I stopped while passing through and since I'm from Minnesota the owner's wife was super nice and told me some North Carolina specialties. All of their food is from personal recipes and their slaw recipe was passed down through 3 generations of a local family. Terrific establishment and is a must try for all living near or just passing through. If I am ever near by again I will be stopping by. Thank you for everything! Doc Brown's is definitely not fancy. Nor is it the best barbecue in Asheville. Nor is it the best barbecue in a five-mile radius. Still, none of that makes it bad by any means. The mac and cheese pie is, of course, a must, despite being slightly dry for my taste. Their barbecue seitan comes in the form of a chili, ground up with a tomato-y sauce, which I was not expecting, but it was quite good. If you want a super casual meal that is also cheap and fast but are too much of a snob to go to Bojangle's, this is the ticket. read more

We used Doc Brown's BBQ for the catering for our 20-person micro wedding in Asheville. David was great to work with, super helpful, and the whole time I knew we were in great hands. The food was AMAZING - we ordered extra food (like 32ish person servings in total) for later in the evening snacking and big eaters, and it was one of the best decisions we could of made. Everyone raved about the food and we had nothing left over (much to my dismay as I was thinking about some leftover mac n cheese for the next morning). We don't live in the area but will be finding our way back to Doc Brown's in the future!! read more

Holy moly, this is some damn good BBQ! My friends and I stumbled along this little hole in the wall when we were out in Canton today, and we were blown away! Some of the best barbecue I've had around here (and I'm born and raised). Christie (sp?) was on point - she was doing everything except cooking the food with a big ol smile and an energy that made my day! We even got to meet THE Doc! David was warm and welcoming and we will definitely make the 30 min drive from North Asheville just to eat here again. I got the chicken salad, which was seasoned perfectly and, since I'm on a diet rn (), felt nice and healthy for being chicken salad. My boyfriend and his friend had the pulled pork which literally melted in their mouths (mine too, had to have a taste!). The cabbage knocked my socks off and the Mac and cheese was the best I've ever had in a restaurant. Oh and the slaw? They have like 5 different kinds - all amazeballs. Keep killin it! Got takeout from Doc Browns bbq today. Got the ribs, brisket, Mac and cheese and collards. The portions are very generous. The ribs/brisket had a great flavor and did not need any sauce. Sides are excellent, generous and corn bread is also very very good. We tried their sauces and they are very good. Reasonable prices and good people. Not far from 40. Worth the trip! read more

We went to try Doc's just before this Covid thing started. Never got around to writing a review until now. The BBQ is right up there with some of the best. They didn't take very long at all to bring our food. The sides were good, but the BBQ was very good. Small place but cozy. We will be sure to go back soon. read more

What a find! Saw that Doc Browns was right off the highway and we got there right before it closed. Both got the pulled pork plate-- so much pulled pork is dry which makes me not order it, but this was the opposite. We both had the sweet bbq sauce which had excellent flavor. I had the Mac salad and creamy cole slaw. Both great, not too much mayo. The slaw was my favorite. He got baked beans (such a delicious sauce) and potato salad. Even the cornbread muffin was delicious and melts in your mouth. To top it off, really nice staff! read more

I work in Candler, and Doc Browns BBQ is my new favorite lunch spot. I've tried all the sauces, the tomato based is my personal favorite, but they're all so good, especially on top of the smoky pulled pork. The Mac-n-cheese is to-die-for. The collard greens are fantastic... I could go on. Just know: the food is top notch. They really fixed up the place too from what was then Cruisers. You can see that they put a lot of time and effort into the renovation. So glad candler finally got an amazing BBQ joint. It was the only thing missing. read more

There's a lot to like here. The food is great - moist and tasty, and a rotating selection of daily sides. We had the collards, baked beans, fried cabbage and mac and cheese. I couldn't fault any of it. Our dishes also came with a side of cornbread. I'd have loved a bigger portion of that! There's an option for a coleslaw "flight" too: four smallish portions chosen from the range on offer, which was a nice touch. Criticisms? The 8pm (or "till it's gone") closing can make dinner a bit hit-or-miss, but I understand they'll be open later once the beer license is in place. And this is a pay-at-the-counter setup. I'd prefer an open check so I could order more as I went along. Okie Dokey's takeout is gone - and sadly missed - but this place takes it to the next level. The Doc will see you now! read more

So my buddy and I have been crazing some great BBQ and got recommended to Doc Browns by a friend. First time there today and our server and order take named Olivia was over the top wonderful! I am really impressed with the food and the service from Olivia was even better. Great cole slaws. Great out of the gate for the brick & mortar restaurant on Smokey Park Hwy. Very clean, fresh-pulled hot entrees, large choices of housemade sides and an occasional grilled meatloaf special that knocks your boots off delivered to your table in pure moments! Attentive staff! Get settled in......... Nowadays, the staff of lovely ladies greet you quickly and take you order from the chalkboard to the computer. Nice, fast way to get the order but,......our visits in the last few weeks have been met with some meat entree's not available like smoked turkey even early in the day; meatloaf in the smoker - MAYBE ready in 30-minutes or so, don't have smoked sausage at all! This is still a young business trying to get their kinks out. I will continue to go to Doc Brown's and help work out these kinks so I can eat their wonderful smoked food! read more
