I went here for the first time today and saw Kara for root color/toner and a haircut. It's gorgeous inside. They have really wonderful products, including Nutrafol vitamins and lots of greenery. The sinks to rinse your hair didn't make my neck go back like others do, so it's just very nice to have that luxury. I recommend this salon to anyone who's not sure if they want to try it out. Start small and see if it's for you (like a root touch up or haircut). I did ask about pricing before making an appointment and it was reasonably priced compared to other luxury salons with great service. This salon came highly recommended and I must say they did not disappoint. Walking into the location, you are transformed to an oasis...live plants and wood everywhere, I loved the atmosphere. After spending ten minutes trying to find an open appointment time for a basic cut, the pleasant and helpful front desk staff finally found a slot open a week down the road. No worries about the wait, I thought, because it must mean people keep coming back. I gave my daughter's name and was asked for her age. Nine years old. I was suddenly put on hold. When the receptionist returned I was told that the stylist had refused to accept an appointment with a child. Maybe state this on your website: No children need apply. She offered to look for a less finicky stylist for me (adding an additional week of wait time) but at that point I was done. Oh well. read more

Caveat - I have pretty terrible hair, thin and easy to break. I couldn't get an appointment with my regular stylist so I booked an appointment with less than a week's notice. I may have gotten a junior stylist, she was young. I got a highlight/lowlight. After she took the color out she looked at it and said we should do a toner so I said OK. My hair came out this dull shade of gray beige/blond and was fried in the back. It looked horrible. The cut was OK. It has taken about a year to grow the fried out of my hair. DNA Lab used to be exceptional quality and service but my last visit unfortunately was was not at all meeting the customer service and quality expectations by the admin staff and the girl who washed my hair and gave me the olaplex treatment. It was subpar and substandard the customer service. I have been going since 2018 and I was there one hour and no one asked if I wanted a drink, which if standard part of the experience. After an hour, I asked myself and the stylist herself was kind enough to get me one. She did a great job with the hair color and removing the huge amount of water left in my hair after the hair wash. read more

I'm pretty sure this is my new salon! Since moving to the DC metro area, I've been looking for a new salon to call home. I came here by the recommendation of a fellow yelper. So glad I listened! David was my stylist. He did an amazing job. I'm loving my cut and color! He's talented, kind, and seems passionate about his work. He definitely goes out of the way to take care of his clients. I had mentioned how I never drink beer anymore because of gluten, so he had his receptionist go out and buy me a gluten free beer. Sweet!!! The salon itself is extremely stylish. It's the nicest/most artistic salon I've ever been to. Even the bathroom is stylin'! DNA has the best hair washing stations as well. They are extremely comfortable and flat, like a small bed. You are also offered a complimentary hand lotion with warm towel while your hair gets washed. Even though this place is about a 40 minute drive, I have no problem making this my regular joint. This place is AWESOME. Two young but well experienced stylists recently left a prominent salon in downtown Frederick to open their own and it is amazing. I've been following David (co-owner with his wife Ana) around the various salons he has worked in around Frederick for the last couple of years and am thrilled that he and Ana have opened their own place. I'm not a very salon-y type of guy but when David first cut my hair in 2009 i knew i found what i'd been looking for for a number of years. David is very in touch with what is cool and modern for both men and women and does a great job of executing current styles. He's very good helping you find a look that works for you and doesn't just give you a "cool/modern" cut that doesn't fit your style like other "cool/modern" salons seem to do. I'm not a really fashion-y or trendy guy, but having a great haircut that matches your personal style really can differentiate you from Joe Blow and give you a nice bit of polish. David and Ana get this and that's why i've been a loyal customer for a number of years. Everything about DNa gives you a good feeling when you come in for a cut. The space is very welcoming and comfortable and having a nice drink (who doesn't like a tasty cocktail on a sunday afternoon?) really makes the experience fun and luxurious. Everyone I've encountered who works here is very friendly and knowledgeable. There are all sorts of cool, organic product based services you can get here that I can't speak to (coloring, etc) but just a good old fashioned shampoo, cut and style is enough to keep me a devoted fan. On a side note, they do offer a bunch of nice, well selected hair products, but unlike other similar high end salons, they are not pushy at all with trying to sell them. Few things bother me more than being pressured into buying a $35 jar of some cream i likely won't use beyond the first week of my cut. Love this place. It's probably way too cool from me, but I don't even care. For example, I walked out with an undercut a few weeks ago--no regrets. Everyone in my office is either jealous or should be. Laura has been my stylist since I moved to the area, and she does such a great job of working with all my quirks, including my insistence on low-maintenance hair, my funny-shaped head, and now with the undercut, a few cowlicks I never even knew I had. Although I'm not a frequent salonster, Laura's cuts grow out really well, and she's always happy to see me when I stumble back into DNa needing to be shorn. Every trip to this place is like a micro-vacation, since they hook you up with a glass of cozy tea or even cozier wine, wrap your hands in a hot towel, and basically pamper you in a clean, contemporary setting. I am merciless when it comes to judging hair salons, and have had some truly horrific experiences elsewhere. When if first came to DNA, I had dark purple hair, and was trying to get it back up to my natural dark blonde and add (non-brassy) highlights. Not an easy feat. David did it in a matter of about 8 weeks, and it didn't damage my hair. They've got great coffee and other drinks, a fantastic atmosphere, a totally NOT top 40 radio station playing, and great people. Their organic products can be trusted not to destroy your hair. This is mostly due to my wonderful, amazing stylist Jesye, but the salon itself is super modern, comfortable, and all the staff is super helpful and friendly. I have been faithfully seeing Jesye every 8 weeks for the last 3 1/2 years. We have done a lot to my hair in that time. I started out with red. She convinced me to go outside my comfort zone, and I was fire engine red for a good long while.....a year maybe? After the red, I have had purple, blue, different shades of blue green and pink. Most recently its blonde and I have loved every last one. Jesye is amazingly talented and all around a fantastic human being and I wouldand have recommended her. I get many compliments on my hair, especially when I had the vivid colors. Jesye has given me some great advice over the years on maintaining my look in the best possible way. This is IT. This is my go-to salon in Frederick, bar none. I had a great first experience with Laura but held off until a second try to review. She is awesome! I love the color she gave me on both visits; the first being a single process and most recently, more involved full highlights. Besides being a great stylist, Laura has a cool personality and it's easy to chat with her while getting my hair done. She listens carefully to what I'd like and isn't afraid to consult with other stylists if she has a question. The other staff I've spoken with are really friendly. It seems like everyone pitches in to answer phones, mix color, and help with random tasks as needed. The salon has a too cool for school vibe but the stylists are not snobby at all. Nice extra touches include a hand treatment while you're being shampooed and delicious loose tea to sip on. Lastly, their products are amazing! I have sensitive skin so the harsh hair dyes at conventional salons cause my skin to look eczema-y near my hairline and neck. The color used here is easy on my skin and lasts just as long with proper care. The styling products Laura has used on me have all been cruelty-free, gluten-free, and any other free you can think of. Besides being as natural as possible, the products smell so yummy! They are pricey but I definitely think they're worth purchasing. Do not hesitate to try Laura or any of the DNa stylists. I've tried DNA several times for myself for cut and color with the owner David. He is wonderful. The color and cut are great with him. He's 5 star. The reason for my 3 star review was my daughter's experience with trying to get purple "ends" on her black hair with one of their other stylists who specializes in "fun" colors. They bleached her ends first (apparently not light enough) and put purple color in. The problem was the bleached parts weren't all colored and were showing through and the purple wasn't that vibrant. So they put more color on - pretty much same result and her hair felt really gummy. Final try was to flat iron color directly into the hair but it still wasn't fully purple over the bleached parts. It was more purple but the problem was that there was so much color left in her hair, that when we tried to wash it, it looked like a purple murder happened in our bathroom. The color (prior to washing it) was all over my daughter and we couldn't even touch her hair without purple all over us. We went back and they ended up clarifying it 8 times. So much purple came it, it was unbelievable. They say they don't know what happened. The stylist/colorist (who wasn't David, I just don't want to call her out on social media) said that has never happened to them before. They did try to help though, by taking 50% off our bill, giving my daughter a free braid and offering to let us get it dyed back to black if we were unhappy. David and his staff really did try to help but I was just upset she never got the purple highlights she wanted (the bottom 4 inches of her hair). So, before I decided to go have it dyed back to black, I did a little research and tried another salon in Rockville. They clarified her hair once, put a special conditioning treatment on it, DID NOT bleach it anymore, but just applied color to the lightened parts and when it was all done, my daughter's hair was gorgeous! People stopped her to tell her so before we even got to the car. I spent like 6 hours at DNA the first time and another 1-2 the second time and never got to purple. I spent 2 1/2 hours at the other salon (Oxygen) and it was a flawless process and her hair is gorgeous. I just don't understand why I couldn't get that at DNA and I've been a client for awhile. I will say David is a very conscientious owner and I appreciate them trying to fix the situation, but in the end, we got our solution somewhere else. I will continue to go to David for my hair and really like him and his professionalism, but if you want "fun" colors and have black hair, I'd try somewhere else or let David do it (the reason I didn't have him do it from the start was because they suggested their fun color expert, my daughter is a tween and I didn't feel the need to pay owner prices for getting her ends "fun" for the summer. read more

I came in August to find a new stylist to continue bleaching and toning my roots. A stylist (whose name I won't mention) did my hair but recommended me to Taylor to have my hair done the following time because she's the blonde specialist. I appreciated her honesty. I called to have my roots done again by Taylor in October, and they said they couldn't book me until the end of November. Then they told me I needed to put down a non-refundable 100$ deposit to book the appointment even though I previously did not have to do that. Honestly, my hair is pictured below after 8 weeks and it looked miserable for the 250$ spent. I had to find a new stylist at a new salon who charged me 500$ to do a hair color correction and bleach my new roots (my hair looks amazing now thank goodness for her). Just overall poor customer service here for the costliness of the salon. I would not recommend to friends. read more

I don't normally post reviews especially not negative ones but I'm feeling the need to do this. My rating is 1 because the amount of time I wasted in the salon, and the money I dropped on the service was not equivalence to the results. Now don't get me wrong it looks good but I don't think that my daughters hair was a drastic enough process for either one of those things. We would have been achieved for a lesser price and lesser time elsewhere. This wasn't the first time my daughter has had highlights done. She's had it done at the same place just a different stylist 2 years ago for less time and a little less money. So my daughter's hair is brown and she is 14 she asked for a balayage. We were very specific to say we weren't trying to go blonde. We wanted to stay in the brown family, but we wanted some balayage dimensional color got there at 10 o'clock. We left at 4:15 so we spent six hours and 15 minutes there and her hair was highlighted not balayage so she had highlights all the way to her roots was not really a faded look like the picture, she showed the stylist. For some reason he colored her natural brown roots brown so he matched her roots with color and then he told her hair twice to get it to the right tone. Before he was done with my daughters hair, he moved onto two other clients and left the two receptionist to shampoo, tone, dry and style. My daughters hair OK I get it people get overbooked, but I was already there at this point for 4 1/2 hours. I paid $396 plus a 20% tip so walked out of there $475 later! I get it I the 20% is on me but $396. $200 for coloring, $75 for Toning, $100 for a haircut when he only took off half an inch and $20 to style some curls in her hair. When I complained about how expensive it was, and wasn't notified prior to that, they told me that I should've had a color consult prior with pricing involved, which never happened. We did not discuss the price of it prior to him starting anything. It was just very disappointing and too much of a sticker shock for me. Needless to say, I canceled my appointment for tomorrow with him. I am in desperate need for a root touchup and a toner myself, but There's no way I can do that all over again. read more

Finding the perfect person to do your hair can be pretty darn impossible, and it took me a few tries to get it right but I have found the perfect stylist at DNa - Madison!!! She is truly amazing at her job and listened to what I was looking for and gave honest suggestions for my hair. I was very specific with my request in regards to the 25 dollar scalp treatment and confirmed with a receptionist the day prior. It's nice to know that they are following COVID procedures and waited outside for someone to open the door. Once I was inside, I expressed my concerns and I'm pretty sure that I said scalp treatment ONLY. The treatment took 20 to 30 minutes to complete when I went to check out I was greeted with a 85.75 dollar bill, it was a little disappointing because I had stated that I wanted the 25 dollar treatment. I received no blow dry no haircut so there really is no reason for the bill to be that much. When I got home my hair felt really dry so I know for a fact that I only received a scalp treatment or should I should I say "scam" treatment with no add ons such as a conditioning treatment to follow the initial treatment. I use to come here and the service is not like it use to be. Overall very disappointed with the overall experience. read more

Finally a real salon with talented stylists! Having been a salon owner and stylist I'm rather picky when it comes to having someone color and cut my hair. I came across DNaLab here on Yelp and am thrilled that I did. DNaLab is really a salon for all the senses. From the time you walk in you immediately relax due to the lighting, pleasant smells (no nasty chemical smells here), and music. My stylist was Tori and she was ready to go as soon as I walked in the door. Tori was great! She took the time to talk to me about what I wanted to do, made suggestions, and didn't rush me. We had great conversation and never once did I feel Tori was trying to "squeeze" in other clients. The products DNaLab uses are exceptional. I like the organic aspect of everything they use. When Tori did my highlights, I could tell the products were all natural - no burning eyes, no unpleasant odors. I especially enjoyed the scalp massage and hand treatment during my shampoo! Back to the most important part - my hair!! I appreciated Tori's education and knowledge about the products she used. Also, her foil placement was unique - not a typical Mohawk placement with bleed marks everywhere that I've experienced at salons in this area. Also, I absolutely LOVE my cut! You could tell by her technique that she absolutely knows what she's doing and she is great at what she does!! Before I left I had the opportunity to meet and talk to one of the owners, David. I learned a little history about him and his wife and this great salon that they've brought to the area. During my visit I looked around at the work he and the other stylists were doing and was very impressed. Everyone was very friendly but not over the top (i.e. 'fake'). This is the best place I have found in the Frederick area for hair! From the moment you walk in you are greeted with a smile and are offered a drink (coffee, tea, beer, wine, a cocktail, water etc). My stylist i forget her name eek sorry but she was half asian half black she was the only dark skinned girl there by the way all the girls that work at this place are so beautiful in their own way. their hair and outfits were so cute but anyway my appointment was at 2:30 she got me in last min which i was happy about and i actually didnt get out of there till almost 9pm ! poor girl the place closed at six and she stayed there alone with me to finish my hair they all help each other out they all work so well together i cut and colored my hair i was going for a pixie cut and gray hair for that new gray trend of 2015 so she really took her time and tried to give me the best color possible she did such a great job trying to lift the color i had in my hair to get it as bleached as possible for this gray to come out right now i was a bit shocked when she finished it was something i had to get used to but after a few days i loved it the color did fade out fast like in a week maybe even sooner cause i wash my hair so much but i am in love even more with the color that it has turned into after the gray came out i didnt like the results of the gray too much but she did exactly what i asked for i just think i couldnt pull it off as well and i looked older but she gave me the best treatment ever so nice of her to stay so long to make sure i was happy with the outcome the hair cut was cute too i have gotten a lot of compliments on it as well as the color that i have now after the gray has come out i would for sure go to this girl again she was amazing and this salon was amazing take a look at my before and after photos and what the color looks like now after a few months later it was pretty expensive but that was expected after a double process bleach and then the gray and then the cut and i was in there for ever plus i bought the shampoo that you use for blondes to keep the color looking nice the blue shampoo it was a little expensive also for the size of the bottle but this stuff is amazing i would recommend it to any girl going blonde it makes your hair look so cute no yellow looking hair thanks again DNA lab coming from a licensed cosmetologist you guys did an amazing job !!!! sorry about no periods or commas by the way its a big run on sentence lol ;) read more

Before coming to this salon I was devoted to going somewhere else. So devoted that I swore no other salon could win my service (I was going to that salon for 6 years). Well, this one did. My cousin told me about this place and the yelp reviews helped a lot in my decision so I went ahead gave it a try. I have a very specific cut (long on one side and super short on the other) so I really needed someone who knew what they were doing. I heard there was a stylist that specialized in short hair so I made sure to ask for her since my short hair was growing out. When I arrived I was cheerfully greeted by a very sweet front desk woman and was asked if I wanted anything to drink (coffee, tea, cocktails, etc.) I chose their coffee, and it was the best coffee I have tasted. After waiting about 5 min I was taken to the back of the salon to get my hair washed. I was asked if I wanted a complimentary hand treatment (I declined at this time, but on my second visit I said yes and it was nice). The hair wash was so nice, they give you a nice scalp massage and use very gentle products. I was then seated at the salon chair and waited for my stylist. It was a quick 5 min wait when Tori walked up. She was a sweet as can be and her hair was beautiful (I always say, if you are going to be a stylist you need to look the part because you advertise yourself) she did an absolutely amazing job. She took her time and made sure to consult with me before cutting to ensure that the hair cut will be what I want it to be. I set an appointment up with Becca after seeing her work on Instagram and she was so sweet, and informative, and honest in terms of pricing and recommendations. Becca gave me a beautiful balayage and when I returned home it appeared just a little bit warmer in color than I had hoped for, so I texted her and she told me she can correct it for me. Normally it would be $40 to correct but Becca took care of me without charging me a penny. She also taught me how to toss my hair in a messy bun! Something I've never known how to do for the last twenty-one years of my life. I'm definitely going to return to Becca and dNa for all of my future hair needs. read more

I have been going to DNa for over a year and a half now. Wouldn't think of going anywhere else!!! I have had bad experiences at other salons and then found DNa and Taylor. Taylor is the absolute best! She takes the time to find out exactly what I'm wanting (and it changes!) on that visit. She doesn't push me to do anything but offers suggestions that have always been spot on! She is a definite pro at what she does and is very passionate about hair. I've never left there without feeling like I had the best experience and the best job done ever! The atmosphere is so cool and the stylists and owners are all so nice. I always look forward to my visits there. My husband even gets his haircut there now and loves it. read more

Same experience as Cheyenne (other reviewer) with same colorist. The people at the salon are nice to chat with, great commitment to sustainability and chemical-free/reduced products, and beautiful salon but I am still growing out my destroyed hair two and half years later. I had blonde highlights put in that cost several hundred dollars (foolish, I know; I had saved up for it and did it for my birthday). I had extensive breaking off of my hair for weeks. The first weeks, chunks fell off when I touched or washed it. I wore it up and paid for treatments about once a month for at least a year. It was like a brillo pad and kept breaking off, so, I was trying to not touch it and hide/fix the texture. I called the hair stylist, emailed the salon, and tried to get help. The stylist suggested I buy protein packs and that was the last I heard from her. The salon owners never responded. I've gone to multiple stylists who specialize in color corrections. Most recommended cutting it all off it was so bad and every one said that a major mistake was made. Worst hair experience. Something about hair -- so emotional. I have not liked my hair until very recently. Just a little more 'brillo pad' to grow out and I can forget this experience. I feel so foolish and embarrassed by my naive trust, that I signed their contract, and payed the prices they charge. Later, co-workers who live in Urbana shared that they and friends avoid this salon, asked why I didn't leave when asked to sign the contract, and to ask around next time. Humbling lesson learned. So, admittedly, I am hard to please. I've travelled the greater DC area - from Bethesda to Union Station to Arlington - to find a great salon, and without a doubt, DNa Lab is the best that I've ever found. First (and likely most important), David and Ana, the owners, are amazing. They are the most gifted stylists, not to mention the nicest people. My haircuts are always on point. Second, their staff is friendly and considerate. Every time I walk in, I am greeted by name with a smile and then asked if I would like a beverage, magazine, whatever. This is the textbook definition of customer service. Third, the salon looks like a staged photoshoot from the newest Restoration Hardware magazine. If David and Ana ever give up the hair salon business, they can decorate my house. Well done, all around. 5 stars for sure. read more
